Foot Euro 2016 . LOUIS - Lance Lynn bounced back from his worst
start of the season with 6 2-3 scoreless innings and the St. Louis Cardinals
placed consecutive two-out RBI doubles just out of right fielder
Giancarlo Stantons reach in a three-run sixth of a 3-2 victory over the Miami
Marlins on Friday night. Stanton, who entered with an NL-leading 21 homers and
61 RBIs, was 0 for 4. He punched the padded wall in frustration after his glove
failed him for the second time, and Marlins starter Nathan Eovaldi (5-4) also
showed frustration when he slammed his glove into the dugout on his way off the
field after the inning. The first four Marlins reached safely in the ninth
before Trevor Rosenthal earned his 26th save in 29 chances. Christian Yelichs
RBI single eluded a sliding Matt Holliday in left and Stanton walked with the
bases loaded before Casey McGehee grounded into a game-ending double play.
Matt Carpenter doubled off the top of the wall in centre field to open the
sixth, missing a home run by inches and circling his fingers as he arrived at
second base. The Cardinals lost a crew chief appeal that lasted just 53 seconds,
but Carpenter scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch and Yadier Molina and
Oscar Taveras drove in a run apiece. Lynn (9-6) allowed five hits with six
strikeouts and three walks. He is 4-4 on the road and in his previous outing
lasted two innings and surrendered a season-worst seven runs, six earned, while
also troubled by a blister on the middle finger of his pitching hand in a loss
to the Dodgers. Eovaldi allowed two singles and two walks in the first five
innings. He gave up three runs on four hits in the sixth. Attendance of 46,131
to begin a seven-game home stand was the Cardinals 24th sellout in 41 games.
NOTES: Cardinals manager Mike Matheny, who will guide the NL in the All-Star
game next week, said hes "pretty close" to finalizing his roster choices. He is
aboard with the game deciding home-field advantage in the World Series. "I like
it meaning something," Matheny said. "Its a great idea." ... Marlins manager
Mike Redmond planned to chat with Matheny and tout Stantons All-Star
credentials. "Id love to see him DH," Redmond said. "I dont know how you dont
have his bat in the lineup, right?" ... Cardinals OF Allen Craig did not start
for the second straight day. Matheny said hes trying to be creative with a
crowded outfield and Taveras, a rookie, getting regular playing time. Craig was
6 for 34 on the trip and is likely to start Saturday against Marlins LHP Andrew
Heaney (0-3, 5.29) with RHP Shelby Miller (7-7, 4.10) starting for St. Louis.
Miller is 6-3 with a 1.78 ERA against the NL East.

LAS VEGAS -- Canelo Alvarez gets a pass, if only because everyone who fights
Floyd Mayweather Jr. gets a pass. Lose a second fight to someone not named
Mayweather, though, and the red-haired Mexicans star could begin to fade. "I
learned a lot from fighting Floyd, but Im ready to get back in the ring to
maintain the path that I was on before," Alvarez said. "This is what I love to
do." The path Alvarez was on took a detour in September when Mayweather
dominated him over 12 rounds, handing Alvarez his first loss. He gets a totally
different type of opponent Saturday night, taking on slugger Alfredo Angulo in a
junior middleweight fight that likely wont be wanting for action. The story line
against Mayweather was whether a young and strong champion could solve a puzzle
no other boxer had been able to. The story line against Angulo will be whether
Alvarez can come back from the loss and establish himself again as one of the
stars of the sport. "What happened in September is in the past," Alvarez
insisted. "Im fully concentrated on this fight." Alvarez didnt pick a walkover
for his comeback fight, the first of what he hopes to be three bouts this year.
Angulo is a rugged and hard-hitting contender who may come into the ring as a
big underdog but will have more than just a punchers chance. Angulo was stopped
in his last fight by Erislandy Lara after his left eye swelled shut in the 10th
round. But he had knocked Lara down twice earlier and was holding his own before
suddenly turning his back to Lara in a sign he couldnt go on. "Im ready to chase
him or fight him like a true Mexican warrior," Angulo said. "I plan to test him
like hes never been tested before. I dont think anyone has ever hit Canelo as
hard as Im going to hit him." The fight is part of a pay-per-view card on
Showtime that was supposed to include a fight between IBF light middleweight
champion Carlos Molina and challenger Jermall Charlo. That fight was cancelled
Friday, though, while Molina remained in a Las Veegas jail on a 2007 felony
warrant for failing to register as a sex offender.
Rode Duivels Shirt
Kopen. Promoters elevated a lightweight fight between Ricardo
Alvarez, brother of Canelo Alvarez, and Sergio Thompson to the televised spot
instead. Alvarez weighed in at 155 pounds Friday, the contract limit, to 154 1/2
for Angulo. Angulo (22-3, 18 knockouts) has had his own issues with jail,
spending eight months at a detention facility in California after turning
himself in for being in the U.S. on an expired visa. The native of Mexico says
he has since cleared up his immigration issues, and devoted himself to his
boxing career at the age of 31. "There were a couple times when I was in the
immigration detention centre that I wanted to quit," Angulo said. "But my team
of lawyers always motivated me, wouldnt let me stay down for too long and kept
telling me that justice would prevail and that I shouldnt give up. I always
dreamed of being a headliner on a major card, and here it is. I am so ready for
Saturday." Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 knockouts) was overmatched in his fight against
Mayweather, losing almost every round and never being able to figure out how to
get inside Mayweathers defence. He vowed to use his first defeat as a learning
experience, though, and wants to regain the stature that has made him a reliable
pay-per-view attraction in recent fights. To do that he must win -- and win
impressively -- against a fighter who might have more guts than talent. "Angulo
presents a difficult challenge because hes a fighter who can punch and take a
great punch," Alvarez said. "I know I have to prepare and establish my game plan
early. But you know how it can be with game plans. Sometimes, once a fight
starts, you have to do what you have to do to win." Angulo said that is just one
of the reasons the fight should be an entertaining one, no matter how long it
lasts. "Style-wise, this is a great matchup for the fans and both of us," he
said. " Fans are going to get a great fight."

LOS ANGELES -- As the celebration raged around them, Sandy Koufax sought out
Clayton Kershaw in the hazy mist of the clubhouse for a hug.
Jalen Ramsey Jaguars Jersey . Koufax, whose
blazing fastball dominated baseball in the mid-1960s, removed the protective
goggles from his eyes and rested his arms on Kershaws broad shoulders. From the
franchises old left-handed ace to its current young southpaw, a smiling Koufax
looked Kershaw in the eyes and bestowed his congratulations. The Dodgers had
advanced to their 10th National League championship series with a 4-3 victory
over the Atlanta Braves on Monday night. "To get a hug and get a good job from a
guy like that, from a guy thats been there, from a guy thats done this before
and was the best at it for a long time is pretty special," Kershaw said. "He
genuinely cares about not only this team but kind of our well-being. He cares
about us. Thats awesome." The NL West champions open the next round Friday
against St. Louis or Pittsburgh. The Cardinals host the wild-card Pirates in a
winner-take-all Game 5 on Wednesday. "Weve moved one step closer," said Don
Mattingly, managing in the playoffs for the first time. Juan Uribe hit a
go-ahead, two-run homer in the eighth inning after Kershaw started on short rest
for the Dodgers, who reached the NLCS for the first time since 2009. "It was a
special night to get to do it here in L.A.," said Kershaw, his hair slick from
the spray of beer and champagne. "We havent won anything yet, but it definitely
feels good to get to celebrate. You never want to pass those moments up."
Carl Crawford homered his first two times up and the Dodgers won the
best-of-five playoff 3-1. "This does not get old. I love the champagne. I love
the burning sensation in my eyes," centre fielder Skip Schumaker said. "A lot of
these guys have never experienced the moving on to the next round and Im happy
for them." Yasiel Puig doubled down the right-field line leading off the eighth
against losing pitcher David Carpenter. The rookie charged into second base and
pumped his right fist in the air. Fans were on their feet chanting "Lets go
Dodgers!" when Uribe fouled off two bunt attempts. Then he sent a hanging 2-2
breaking ball into the Dodgers bullpen in left field to put them in front for
the second time. Uribe knew it was gone as soon as he connected. He dropped his
bat and threw both arms in the air at home plate. "This moment today Ill never
forget," he said. "I think a lot of people feel like that." Meanwhile, it was
the latest October flop for Atlanta, which hasnt won a post-season series since
2001. During that stretch, the Braves have lost seven straight playoff series
and the 2012 NL wild-card game. "To end the way it did tonight, its going to
hurt. Its going to be a long way back," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "But
tip your hat to the Dodgers and congratulate Donnie and his staff. The sad thing
is there are no more games, you know?" Brian Wilson pitched a scoreless eighth
to get the victory. Kenley Jansen struck out all three batters in the ninth for
a save, fanning Justin Upton to end it. That set off a raucous celebration on
the field by the Dodgers, who rushed toward the mound in a mob. They tore
jerseys off each other in unbridled excitement and doused Uribe with a
bright-colored sports drink. "This team has a lot of fun. We dont think about
being the team to beat and all that stuff. We just go out there and play and try
to have fun," Crawford said. Jansen and catcher A.J. Ellis leaped into each
others arms, and a burst of fireworks lit the sky in centre field as blue and
silver streamers cascaded from an upper level of the stadium. The Dodgers lined
up exchanging hugs in the infield, and co-owners Mark Walter and Magic Johnson
grinned watching the revelry among the team they purchased last year. Kershaw,
Puig, Wilson and other players jogged around the warning track exchanging
high-fives and hand slaps with delirious fans. "They were loud," Kershaw said.
"They want it just as much as we do." The Dodgers were criticized for jumping
into the ballpark pool in Arizona when they clinched the NL West crown last
month. This time, they got to party at home. The Braves took a 3-2 lead in the
seventh on pinch-hitter Jose Constanzas RBI single off reliever
Ronald Belisario. Needing a win to avoid elimination, Gonzalez never got the
ball to lights-out closer Craig Kimbrel. "You dont want it to ever end the way
we ended today. But we had the right guy out there. Carp has been good for us,"
Gonzalez said. "There is nothing to be ashamed of." The Dodgers gambled in
bringing back Kershaw on three days rest for the first time in his career. But
with a chance to close out the series, they opted for their ace over scheduled
starter Ricky Nolasco. The move paid off when the 2011 Cy Young Award winner
tossed six solid innings before turning it over to the bullpen. "This is the
post-season," Kershaw said. "You just go. Its a one-month sprint and Im looking
forward to the next couple games." Kershaw wasted a 2-0 lead, giving up two
unearned runs and three hits. He struck out six and walked one on 91 pitches.
With one out in the seventh, Elliot Johnson tripled into the right-field corner,
sending Puig sliding into the dirt chasing the ball as it caromed off the wall.
Constanza, batting for starting pitcher Freddy Garcia, singled into centre to
put the NL East champions ahead for the first time. Garcia allowed two runs and
eight hits in six innings. He struck out six and walked two. The Braves tied it
2-all in the fourth. Crawfords second homer of the game came in the third,
landing deep in the lower right-field seats for a 2-0 lead. Crawford led off the
first with a towering home run to the right-field pavilion, smiling broadly as
the Dodgers took a 1-0 lead. "The smile on his face when he hit that homer is
priceless," Mattingly said. NOTES: The Dodgers lost in five games to
Philadelphia four years ago in the NLCS. ... The last Dodgers pitcher to start
on short rest in the playoffs was Derek Lowe, who allowed two runs and six hits
in five innings of a no-decision in Game 4 of the NLCS on Oct. 13, 2008, against
Philadelphia. ... Crawfords leadoff homer was the second in Dodgers post-season
history. Davey Lopes homered leading off Game 6 of the 1978 World Series. Hes
now the first base coach for the team. ... Kershaw allowed seven unearned runs
during the regular season, all of them at Dodger Stadium.

Josh Evans Jaguars Jersey . But its also a
smart game. Theres more to the Kings than banging bodies. They take a toll
mentally on their opponents.Great news for NCAA fans in Canada, as 16 of the 35
bowl games this season can be found on TSN, TSN2 or TSN1050 (and in some cases
multiple platforms). All of the games arent created equal and with bowl season
kicking off Saturday with the first four matchups, its time to rank them from
best to "35th most exciting." 1. BCS National Championship - Florida State vs
Auburn (January 6th, 8:30 on TSN and TSN1050)The easiest decision on the list
sees #1 and #2 in the BCS fighting for the National Championship. The only
remaining FCS undefeated team in the Seminoles takes on the biggest Cinderella
story college football has seen in years in the Auburn Tigers. If watching the
two best teams of the season battle for the crystal trophy isnt enough, tune in
for a chance to watch Heisman trophy winner Jameis Winston cap off his freshman
season. 2. Rose Bowl - Michigan State vs Stanford (January 1st, 5:00 on TSN2)The
granddaddy of them all takes place on a loaded New Years Day and features two of
the best defenses in the country. Stanford came out of the difficult Pac-12
while Michigan State ended Ohio States title hopes to win the BIG 10. If you
love smash mouth football this is the game for you. 3. Valero Alamo Bowl -
Texas vs Oregon (December 30th, 6:45 on TSN1050)This game shot up my list the
minute Mack Brown announced it would be his last game on the sidelines for the
Longhorns. After a storied career that included a national championship hell
step down after this game. Texas has a chance to win one for their coach
against a very talented Oregon team that may not be excited to be playing in the
Alamo bowl after opening the season with national championship hopes. Still,
this game has intriguing storylines and talent all over the field its a must-see
game. 4. Orange Bowl - Ohio State vs Clemson (January 3rd, 8:30 on TSN2 and
TSN1050)Ohio State had the inside track to the title game before losing to
Michigan State in the BIG 10 Championship. Clemson had their championship hopes
dashed earlier in the year when they fell, and fell hard against Florida State.
Even though both teams had higher hopes, theyll both be out to win a very
competitive BCS bowl game against a similar style team. Neither defense is very
imposing this season, and both offences are incredible. Braxton Miller facing
off with Tajh Boyd could be the best QB battle of the bowl season. 5.
Chick-Fil-A Bowl - Texas A&M vs Duke (January 31st, 8:00)Johnny Manziel is
expected to bolt to the NFL after this game, so its the last chance to see one
of colleges most electric players put on a show. Its ironic that a player with
red flags for off-field partying issues will ring in the New Year trying to hang
points on what should be an over-matched Duke squad. The Blue Devils enjoyed
their most successful football season ever, but did it in a weak ACC and were
exposed against FSU in the conference title game. Theyll look to bounce back
and prove they belong amongst college footballs semi-elite. 6. All-State Sugar
Bowl - Alabama vs Oklahoma (January 2nd, 8:30 on TSN2 and TSN1050)Nick Saban
signed an extension thatll pay him nearly $7 million a season to roam the
sidelines in Tuscaloosa. He can start to earn some of that coin with a victory
over Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl. The Crimson Tide may have missed out on a
chance on a third straight national championship but adding to their recent
resume with a win in this game would still be a great coup. Its also the last
chance to watch Heisman runner-up AJ Mccarron before he graduates and heads to
the NFL. 7. Fiesta Bowl - Baylor vs UCF (January 1st, 8:30, TSN2 or TSN1050)Both
of these teams over-achieved and find themselves in a BCS bowl for the first
time. Interesting story line to follow for this one is Bears head coach Art
Briles who has been linked to gigs with Texas and in the NFL with the Washington
Redskins despite signing an extension this year. Its a last audition for him to
show off his exciting and productive offence. QB Bryce Petty has decided to
come back next year, but watching him and RB Lache Seastrunk alone makes this
appointment viewing. 8. AT&T Cotton Bowl - Missouri vs Oklahoma State
(January 3rd, 1:00)Missouri lost their chance at the title game when they took
their second loss of the season in the SEC championship game. Oklahoma State
missed their chance at a Big 12 crown when they lost their finale to Oklahoma.
Despite both teams coming in after taking an "L" they both had incredible years
and should match-up to provide some entertainment in a battle of programs
trending in the right direction. 9. Capital One Bowl - South Carolina vs
Wisconsin (January 1st, 1:00)Jadeveon Clowney has his last chance to impress NFL
scouts on a football field before turning pro after what was a disappointing
campaign. He is still a freak, and properly motivated could provide viewers
with quite the show. On the other side will be a Wisconsin team that would like
to be playing in a different New Years Day game but should still be very
motivated to knock off a tough SEC opponent. RBs Melvin Gordon and James White
both ran for over 1,000 yards and are among the best tandems in college
football. Itll be interesting to see how those two avoid Clowney on the other
side of the ball. 10. Russell Athletic Bowl - Louisville vs Miami (December
28th, 6:45)QB Teddy Bridgewater claims he hasnt made up his mind regarding
leaving college for the pro game, but make no mistake hes leaving Louisville
after this bowl game. Much like Clowney and a few others vying for the number
one draft slot its his last on-field chance to make a statement. Miami could
prove to be a worthy foe; they were a top-10 program before getting slammed by
FSU. 11. Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl - Fresno State vs USC (December 21,
3:30)The best game of the opening day sees QB Derek Carr of Fresno State take on
the Trojans who will be auditioning for new coach Steve Sarkisian. While USC
wont have their new boss on the sidelines, its always added incentive for
players when they know their new coach is taking notes. As for Carr, this is
the 3rd straight game on the list that has a top-tier NFL draft prospect stating
his case. Carrs brother David was a number-one selection, and while Derek may
not go that high he does have the chance to be the first QB off the board. 12.
Taxslayer.com Bowl - Georgia vs Nebraska (January 1st, Noon)There are a few SEC
versus BIG 10 matchups this bowl season. Bo Pelini may be coaching for his job
for the Cornhuskers, and hes also coaching to give some respect to the BIG 10.
A win in this game would go a long way for the conference in their bid to shake
the "down" label. One player to watch is RB Todd Gurley for Georgia, watch for
him to pick up the slack with QB Aaron Murray out due to injury. 13. Outback
Bowl - LSU vs Iowa (January 1st, 1:00 on TSN2)This game features an SEC team
with an injured QB taking on a BIG 10 program fighting for respect. Its crazy
how similar this game is to the Taxslayer.com bowl. Iowas defense has a chance
to keep them in this one, and with QB Zach Mettenberger out, LSU may struggle to
score points. This game has a chance to be a defensive battle, but that doesnt
mean it wont be fun to watch. 14. Poinsetta Bowl - Northern Illinois vs Utah
State (December 26th, 9:30 on TSN1050)Huskies QB Jordan Lynch was a Heisman
nominee and one of the few players in the country you must watch. He plays in
the MAC which doesnt receive much attention but his game is definitely worth
enjoying. His combination of pass/rush is very unique and very successful. He
is similar to Ohio State QB Braxton Miller, but plays for a team that relies on
him much more. 15. Hawaii Bowl - Boise State vs Oregon State (December 24th,
8:00 on TSN2 and TSN1050)When youre done with dinner on Christmas Eve cozy up by
the fire place and turn on the television to watch these two programs do
battle. Much like USC, the Broncos will be out auditioning for a new head coach
after Chris Petersen bolted to Washington. 16. Sun Bowl - UCLA vs Virginia
Tech (December 31st, 2:00)UCLA QB Brett Hundley may head to the NFL after this
one and he may go with a prominent agent. Hundleys father joked about a meeting
with JAY-Z saying if they were going to meet he wanted Beyonce in the room.
Sounds funny, but with a big performance in this one its all but a done deal
Hundley moves on. For those who love coaching controversy UCLAs Jim Mora has
beenn rumored as an option at Texas.
John Cyprien Jaguars Jersey. A big win here
could keep his name in those discussions. 17. Pinstripe Bowl - Rutgers vs Notre
Dame (December 28th, Noon)Sometimes the venue alone is reason to watch a game
and thats the case with the Pinstripe Bowl which is held at Yankee Stadium.
Notre Dame QB Tommy Rees will play his final game against an awful pass defense
that ranked 120th in the country and Vegas expects a big performance - the
Fighting Irish are currently more than two touchdown favorites. 18. Advocare
V100 Bowl - Arizona vs Boston College (December 31st, 12:30)Kadeem Carey of
Arizona and Andre Williams of Boston College are the two of the best backs in
the country. Williams rushed for 2,102 yards which was tops in the FBS, while
Carey took top spot back in 2012. The passing games may not be on display in
this one, but the running attacks make it worth tuning in for. 19. Holiday Bowl
- Arizona State vs Texas Tech (December 30th, 10:50 on TSN1050)Todd Graham won
Pac-12 coach of the year and Red Raiders HC Kliff Kingsbury is one of the
fastest rising bosses in the NCAA. Arizona State enters having won seven
straight while Texas Tech has lost five in a row after starting with seven
straight wins. Two top-20 offenses could light up the scoreboard and provide
one of the most exciting bowl games on the schedule. 20. Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl
- Michigan vs Kansas State (December 28, 10:15)This has been billed as a battle
of two teams in a rebuilding year - but dont buy that story. Michigan wasnt
rebuilding, they underachieved and suffered five losses under third year coach
Brady Hoke. On the positive side, the Wolverines came within a two-point
conversion of winning "The Game" against Ohio State. Its been Jeckyl and Hyde
for Michigan this season and its anyones guess which team will show up for this
one. Two bright spots are QB Devin Gardner and WR Jeremy Gallon. Kansas State
looks for their first bowl win since 2002. 21. Fight Hunger Bowl - BYU vs
Washington (December 27th, 9:30)Steve Sarkisian is out as Huskies coach after
taking over the USC Trojans program but Washington arguably upgraded landing
Chris Petersen. He wont be on the sidelines but hell have eyes on this tilt
which sees two top-15 offences do battle at AT&T Park in San Francisco. QB
Keith Price and RB Bishop Sankey of Washington are two key players to watch in
this one. 22. Music City Bowl - Ole Miss vs Georgia Tech (December 30th,
3:15)Ole Miss has won their last five bowl games but enter this one on a
two-game losing streak. They failed to score 10 points in both of those losses
and may have a tough time putting up points against the Yellow Jackets. Georgia
Tech will run the ball to eat clock using the triple-option before sending out
the nations 21st ranked defence. QB Bo Wallace will need to have a strong
performance for Ole Miss to make it six straight bowl wins. 23. BBVA Compass
Bowl - Houston vs Vanderbilt (January 4th, 1:00, TSN2)HC James Franklin has
Vandy trending in the right direction with 17 wins in the last two seasons. To
put how big of an accomplishment that is into perspective, its the first time
ever the program is heading to a bowl game for a third straight year. They won
their final four games, while Houston lost three of four4 heading into bowl
season. The Cougars will lean on their 16th ranked defense to keep this one
close. 24. Belk Bowl - Cincinnati vs North Carolina (December 28th, 3:20)UNC let
the fans pick their uniforms for this one, which is cool and gives me a reason
to tune in. If youre looking for something a little deeper the atmosphere
should be great with North Carolina playing only 140 miles from Chapel Hill. On
the other side of the field theyll see a Bearcats team thats been here before;
they won the Belk Bowl last season. 25. Little Caesars Pizza Bowl - Bowling
Green vs Pittsburgh (December 26th, 6:00)Bowling Green won the MAC title
upending Jordan Lynch and the Huskies in the title game at Ford Field, and now
they find themselves back in Detroit. They average 14.8 points allowed per game
which is fifth-best in the FBS. Pitt boasts Senior Aaron Donald who won
defensive player of the year. 26. New Mexico Bowl - Washington State vs
Colorado State (December 21st, 2:00 on TSN2 and TSN1050) Colorado State will go
as far as RB Kapri Bibbs takes them. Hes a high end talent that scored 28 TDs
this season. Cougars HC Mike Leach loves to pass the ball which is good and bad
- fun to watch, but QB Connor Halliday threw 21 interceptions, which was worst
in the FBS. This game should be full of big plays, points, and mistakes. 27.
GoDaddy Bowl - Arkansas State vs Ball State (January 3rd, 9:00)You have to feel
bad for juniors on Arkansas State - when they return for their fourth year next
season theyll have a fourth head coach after Bryan Harsin accepted the Boise
State gig. That said; its their third straight appearance in this bowl and got
the bid after finishing as co-Sun Belt champs. Ball State QB Keith Wenning will
top 4,000 yards passing in this one and had an impressive 34:6 TD/INT ratio. 28.
Autozone Liberty Bowl - Rice vs Mississippi State (December 31st, 4:00)The
Mississippi State Bulldogs won their final two games in overtime to get six wins
and become bowl eligible. Six wins may not be overly impressive, but all six of
the Bulldogs losses came against Top 25 ranked teams (Oklahoma State, Auburn,
LSU, South Carolina, Texas A&M and Alabama). Rice won 10 games and took
home their first outright conference title since 1957. 29. Famous Idaho Potato
Bowl - Buffalo vs San Diego State (December 21st, 5:30 on TSN2 and
TSN1050)Khalil Mack is the highlight of this bowl game. He racked up 94
tackles, 11 sacks, three interceptions and two TDs this season for Buffalo.
Many NFL mock drafts have Mack in the top 10 and a big performance here could
land him right there. There are lots of offensive players worth watching this
bowl season, but very few defensive stars that are worth tuning in for - Mack is
one. 30. Texas Bowl - Syracuse vs Minnesota (December 27th, 6:00)The Orangemen
find themselves in back-to-back bowl games for the first time since Donovan
McNabb - and all it took was a victory over Boston College in the final week of
the season to do it. Minnesota returns to the Texas Bowl after losing last
season. The Golden Gophers are looking to win nine games for just the second
time in 108 years. 31. Beef OBrady St. Petersburgh Bowl - East Carolina vs Ohio
(December 23rd, 2:00 on TSN2)ECU has a great QB/WR tandem in Shane Carden and
Justin Hardy thats worth seeing before the year is complete. Carden was sixth
in passing with 3,800 yards, while Hardy caught 105 passes; which was fifth best
in the FBS. The Bobcats 29th ranked pass defense will need to step up if they
have any chance of hanging with ECU. 32. Bell Helicopter Bowl - Middle Tennessee
vs Navy (December 30, 11:45AM on TSN2)Navy runs the triple-option and was second
best in the country with 322 yards per game on the ground. MTSU was 85th versus
the run. This one could be a track meet, and who doesnt love long running plays
and lots of scoring. 33. Military Bowl - Marshall vs Maryland (December 27th,
2:30 on TSN2)The Terps head to the Big 10 next season, and would love to take a
bowl win with them. Theyll play this one in front of a home crowd with Navy
Stadium only 27 miles from campus. Marshall is trying to win 10 games for the
first time since 2002 - when QB Byron Leftwich was the star. This year its been
another pivot leading the way in Rakeem Cato. His 36:9 TD/INT ratio was one of
the best in all of college football. 34. R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl - Tulane
vs Louisiana Lafayette (December 21, 9:00 on TSN2 and TSN1050)Despite being 34th
on the list, if I could attend one bowl game this season it would be this one
for the BBQ at the tailgate parties alone. The Green Wave vs the Rajin Cajuns
is the battle of two of the coolest names in the NCAA. If youre looking for a
player to watch, try Tulane QB Nick Montana - hes the son of Joe Montana. 35.
Heart of Dallas Bowl - UNLV vs North Texas (January 1st, Noon)And the award for
the "35th best" bowl game goes to the Heart of Dallas Bowl. Its in tough
against the packed New Years Day schedule but its still a bowl game - and thats
saying something. Follow The TSN College Football Show on twitter

. 5 Trade Deadline is drawing closer and teams will be deciding on whether to
buy or sell while figuring out which players can make the biggest difference and
hold the greatest value. Check out todays trade-related reports and speculation
from around the NHL beat. And follow TSN.ca through Deadline Day for all the
updates. Be-Deviled Devils beat writer Randy Miller of NJ.com makes a case for
New Jersey to acquire veteran forward Daniel Briere from the Montreal Canadiens,
saying that Briere may not be happy with his playing situation in Montreal,
could be a top-line centre with the Devils and would be closer to his sons who
live in Haddonfield, New Jersey. Miller suggests that swapping Briere for
defenceman Anton Volchenkov could work, as Volchenkov carries a $4.25 million
cap hit through 2015-16 and Briere has a $4 million hit through next season. But
not so fast... TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun says that while Briere wasnt
happy about spending time in the press box, hes had an impact since returning to
the lineup and the situation with both sides seems to have settled down for now.
A source told him that a conversation Briere had with GM Marc Bergevin reassured
him of his role and value to the team and with forward Alex Galchenyuk out for
six weeks, Briere now should have a chance at regular ice time. Canucks Want
List As written by LeBrun on ESPN.com, the Vancouver Canucks would like to add a
centre before the trade deadline and, if not a centre, a top-nine winger. LeBrun
says that Brad Richardson has been terrific as a No. 3 center for the Canucks,
but feels if they can have him centring the fourth line and can upgrade the
third center spot, theyd feel better about their playoff chances. If the cant
they could keep Richardson in the No. 3 hole and upgrade the fourth-line centre
job. He adds that the Canucks are deep on defence throughout the organization
and could put a blueliner out there to make a meaningful deal. Patient Penguins
The Globe and Mails Eric Duhatschek writes that the Pittsburgh Penguins could be
interested in acquiring help on the wing with veterans like Ales Hemsky, Michael
Cammalleri or Matt Moulson available, but will want to see how rookie
Beau Bennett plays coming back off injury first. Hes expected back at some point
next month and Duhatschek adds that GM Ray Shero would like to have him play a
short stint in the minors before NHL play starts up again after the Olympics.
The Penguins will expected to have Paul Martin back in the lineup by then, which
leaves them with a surplus of defencemen. Sizzling Sens With six wins in their
last eight games, the Ottawa Senators are in a dogfight for a postseason spot
and re-signed general manager Bryan Murray is looking for another piece - most
likely a forward - to make a run this spring. "Just watching the progress in the
last month and a little bit, I think that the objective now is certainly more
than it was a month before," Murray said on a conference call. "We are available
to make a deal." On The Island According to Arthur Staple of Newsday, the New
York Islanders have had some contract discussions with Thomas Vaneks agent, but
both sides are waiting to see what direction the team goes in down the stretch.
Im sure well talk, but Im trying to stay out of it," Vanek said. "Until
something gets close, I need to focus on the games." Vanek is in the final year
of a seven-year, $50 million contract he signed with the Buffalo Sabres. Staying
In Denver? As per Adrian Dater of the Denver Post, centre Ryan OReilly and the
Colorado Avalanche have agreed to wait until the summer to discuss a new
contract. OReilly, whos making $6.5 million this season, is still a restricted
free agent in July. On Feb. 28 of last year, the Avalanche matched a two-year,
$10 million offer sheet from the Calgary Flames meaning the team cant trade
OReilly for one year from the date they matched the offer.

captain for the remainder of the regular season. Jonathan Toews will sit out the
last six games of the season with an upper-body injury suffered on Mar. 30 in a
loss against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The 25-year-old was hit hard by Penguins

The goal of the "Meet The Prospects" series is to familiarize readers with some
of the more prominent prospects in the Class of 2012.
Bryce Harper Jersey . These articles are, by
no means, a complete prospect listing, nor are they rankings...those will come
later. Also, with that in mind, the term "Potential Sleepers" is used in this
series to describe players who could sneak into the earlier rounds of the draft,
as opposed to the traditional reference to a lesser known or lower ranked
prospect. Defensive Line Cream of the Crop: Defensive end Tyrone Crawford (Boise
State) is NFL-bound, while tackle Christo Bilukidi (Georgia State) is generating
serious interest down south as well. End Ameet Pall (Wofford) is also pursuing
his NFL options after a stellar NCAA (FCS) career and, assuming that his
non-import status will eventually be granted, Bo Adebayo (Western Kentucky)
belongs on this list, too. Best of the Rest: Hasan Hazime (Akron) has good film
and a strong résumé but his immediate future is cloudy. He redshirted in 2011
following an early season ACL tear but has since graduated and reportedly left
the Zips football program. His rehab is ahead of schedule so, assuming he makes
a complete recovery, his draft status will ultimately depend on whether he
decides to turn pro this year or play out his eligibility at another school.
Defensive end Justin Capicciotti (Simon Fraser) followed up his productive
college career by turning in a great E-Camp performance. Burning Questions: How
many of the top prospects will wind up in NFL camps? Simply put, as the top
prospects odds of sticking in the NFL increase, their CFL Draft stock
decreases…which opens the door for the next tier of prospects to move up on
Draft Day. Potential Sleepers: The depth at this position is the only reason
that tackles Jake Thomas (Acadia), Jabar Westerman (Eastern Michigan), and
redshirt junior Michael Atkinson (Boise State), as well as end Arnaud
Gascon-Nadon (Laval) arent listed in one of the previous categories. Thomas,
Westerman, and Atkinson all possess uncommon athleticism for players their size.
As for Gascon-Nadon, the two-time Metras Trophy winner as the top CIS lineman,
his stock may have taken a hit when his hamstring injury and subsequent refusal
to participate in testing led to a premature departure from E-Camp. Nonetheless,
he remains a very worthy prospect. Linebackers Cream of the Crop: Fredric
Plésius (Laval) didnt have his best season for the Rouge et Or but he remains a
rare physical talent and the headliner in a deep class of linebackers. South of
the border, the film on redshirt junior Hervé Tonye-Tonye (Northern Colorado) is
limited because he sat out the 2011 season after transferring from Alcorn State.
Nonetheless, hes an impressive physical specimen, who was a highly productive
performer at Alcorn. Best of the Rest: With a number of talented linebackers
jockeying for draft position, Rene Stephan (Harding) and Sam Hurl (Calgary)
emerged as two of the great revelations of E-Camp weekend. The key with Stephan
is his upside, as he is a gifted athlete but has been out of football for two
years. Despite his absence from the game, he didnt look out of place among the
top draft eligible prospects. Hurl was a much more proven commodity on the field
but the combine setting also allowed him to establish that hes more athletic
than some might have thought. Burning Question: Is Plésius best suited to play
linebacker or defensive end? The same debate surrounded eventual #1 overall pick
Shomari Williams in 2010. Plésius had no issues in coverage at the CIS level but
some are concerned that, at 245 lbs., he may be challenged to do it in the CFL.
That question mark, along with his size and power, make him a candidate to move
to end, where he was slotted as a freshman at Baylor in 08. Potential Sleepers:
Jonathan Beaulieu-Richard (Montreal) may prove to be a steal for a team that is
willing to wait an extra year for him, as he has already committed to return to
UdeM this fall to complete his pharmacy degree. Filipe Fonseca da Silva
(Sherbrooke) and Wilkerson DeSouza (Toronto) also stand out, as both rank in the
Top 5 in the country in total tackles over the last two seasons. Defensive Backs
Cream of the Crop: A strong argument could be made that Courtney Stephen
(Northern Illinois) was the best defensive back in the CIS before he transferred
away from Wilfrid Laurier after his sophomore year. He suffered a knee injury
last season but should be 100% by the fall, when hell complete his eligibility
at NIU. Best of the Rest: E-Camp testing revealed that Keenan MacDougall
(Saskatchewan) and Dylan Hollohan (St. Francis Xavier) are athletic freaks…but
each is accompanied by a unique concern. MacDougall missed the entire 2011
season with a knee/quadriceps injury and then tweaked a hamstring at E-Camp,
prompting many to wonder about his health and durability. Hollohan is undersized
and not overly physical, which creates matchup concerns against bigger
receivers. Burning Question: How good a football player is Keenan MacDougall?
The Huskies star played three full seasons before sitting out last year but the
lack of 2011 film and the E-Camp injury that limited his participation in
one-on-ones have left scouts without much in the way of a current evaluation of
his skills. Potential Sleepers: Theres no doubt that safety Bryce McCall
(Saskatchewan) is limited athletically, which makes a combine environment less
than ideal for him to showcase his strengths. However, there arent many players
in the draft with a stronger work ethic or better football sense. Specialists
Cream of the Crop: The reality is that, unlike 2010 and 2011, there wont be any
specialists generating early round buzz. Best of the Rest: None of the top guys
are considered triple threats (punts, field goals, and kickoffs) but punter
Brett Cameron (North Dakota) is likely the best prospect. Among the
placekickers, keep an eye on Derek Williams (Savannah State), Austin Anderson
(McGill), and William Dion (Sherbrooke). Linebacker Aaron Crawford (Saint Marys)
is a top flight long snapper. Burning Questions: Will any kickers from the Class
of 2012 be able to find CFL employment this season? Its only an eight-team
league and kicker is a position that is associated with career longevity. So
many young non-import kickers (Rob Maver, Christopher Milo, Justin Palardy,
Grant Shaw, Hugh ONeill, Rene Paredes, Josh Maveety) have entered the league
over the last two years that it might have reached a saturation point. Potential
Sleepers: Kickers Anthony Alix (St. Francis Xavier) and Taylor Wandler (Regina)
are both still refining their consistency but likely have the strongest legs in
the class.
Bryce Harper Nationals Jersey . Both sides
are having domestic troubles going into their meeting in Tuesdays Champions
League round of 16 first-leg match, but it is arguably Barcelona which has more
to prove. Saturdays 3-2 loss at Osasuna, coupled with Real Madrids 4-2 win over
Levante on Sunday, left the defending Spanish champion 10 points behind its
bitter rival, which has dropped only eight points all season.
Yadier Molina Cardinals Jersey . Despite
almost exhausting all methods of saying no by this point, the B.C. native once
again shot down the notion of facing his teammate. However, MacDonalds
reluctance appeared to raise the ire of Tyron Woodley, who was preparing for a
bout with Josh Koscheck.COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed
right wing Oliver Bjorkstrand of the Western Hockey Leagues Portland Winterhawks
to a three-year, entry-level contract. Bjorkstrand was the clubs fifth pick,
89th overall, in the 2013 NHL draft. The 6-foot, 169-pounder has 25 goals and 31
assists and a +21 plus/minus rating in 32 games this season, helping Portland
amass the WHLs second-best record at 23-8-2-2.
Josh Donaldson Blue Jays Jersey. . Hes
currently tied for third in the league in short-handed goals (3), fourth in
goals and points, tied for seventh in game-winning goals (4) and eighth in
assists and plus/minus. Bjorkstrand has 56 goals and 63 assists and a +59
plus/minus rating in 97 career WHL games. The Herning, Denmark, native also
represented his country at the 2012 World Junior Championships.

SAN DIEGO -- Other than one bad pitch, Chicago Cubs left-hander Travis Wood had
a pretty good night.
Shaq Lawson Jersey . Wood came within five
outs of pitching his first career shutout before allowing Carlos Quentins
pinch-hit, two-run home run, and Chicago held on to beat the San Diego Padres
3-2 Saturday night. Wood (5-4) hit an RBI single and Luis Valbuena homered for
the Cubs, who bounced back from an 11-1 loss Friday night. Wood allowed two runs
and three hits in 7 1-3 innings, struck out three and walked two. "I felt good
all game," Wood said. "I made a bad pitch there to Quentin. I wanted a cutter
in, but didnt quite get it all the way in there and he got through it. But other
than that everything was working pretty good all game." Quentin, who missed the
previous four games with a groin injury, hit an 86 mph pitch an estimated 405
feet off the left-field facade with one out in the eighth to chase Wood. Quentin
has five career pinch homers and two in one week. Yasmani Grandal was aboard on
a one-out walk. Other than that, "my fastball was locating down and I got some
quick outs there," Wood said. "All in all, no complaints other than one pitch,
but thats going to happen." Quentin also hit a two-run, pinch homer last
Saturday at Colorado. He hurt his groin on Sunday and hadnt played until
Saturday nights appearance. "Thats a hard thing to do to pinch-hit -- one of the
hardest roles in our game to come off the bench without playing and go step in
the batters box against pitcher and hit a home run," manager Bud Black said.
"That is hard to do and he has done it twice in a week. "When Carlos does that,
that is what we expect," Black said. "He is a dynamic offensive player and our
team changes." Problem is, the Padres havent seen much of Quentin this year. He
missed the first 39 games after starting the season on the disabled list with a
bone bruise in his left knee. "He makes us better," Black said. "Hes arguably
our best offensive player each and every night he is in the game." Valbuena
extended his hitting streak to eight games when he drove an 88 mph fastball from
Billy Buckner into the right field seats with one out in the sixth. It was his
third. Nate Schierholtz doubled to right with two outs. The Padres intentionally
walked Darwin Barney to get to Wood, who singled up the middle to drive in
Schierholtz. Valbuena also scored in the fourth, reaching on a walk, advancing
on Welington Castillos single and coming in on Schierholtzs base hit.
Hector Rondon pitched the ninth for his sixth save in seven chances. Buckner
(0-1) started in place of Andrew Cashner, who is on the disabled list with a
sore right elbow. Buckners contract was purchased earlier Saturday from Triple-A
El Paso. He allowed three runs and six hits in 5 2-3 innings, struck out four
and walked three. NOTES: In a pregame ceremony, the Padres honoured first
responders involved in fighting last weeks wildfires. The players and coaches
formed two lines in the outfield and greeted the first responders as they walked
in from the warning track. ... Cashner played long toss for the first time since
going on the disabled list, retroactive to May 15. Cashner will throw again
Sunday. . RHP Tim Stauffer pitched well enough in Fridays win over the Cubs to
earn another start. It will come on Wednesday at Arizona. . Newly acquired LHP
Troy Patton, acquired from Baltimore in Saturdays trade for C Nick Hundley, will
complement LHP Alex Torres in the bullpen. He should arrive in San Diego on
Sunday. . Cubs OF Justin Ruggiano could rejoin the team on the road trip; hes
been on the DL since April 24 with a strained hamstring. Ruggiano played
consecutive games in Triple-A Iowa on Thursday and Friday. . Padres RHP
Ian Kennedy (2-6, 3.79) faces Cubs RHP Jason Hammel (5-2, 2.91) in Sundays
series finale.
Richie Incognito Jersey . "What do they think
theyll get out of Marte," he asked. In words, maybe not much. At the plate,
enough to keep Pittsburgh in the hunt for a second straight playoff spot.
Andre Reed Jersey .S. Open. The fourth-seeded
Russians rallied after losing the first set to beat Hingis and Flavia Pennetta
2-6, 6-3, 6-2 on Saturday night. NEW YORK -- Jaromir Jagr of the New Jersey
Devils, Manny Malhotra of the Carolina Hurricanes and Dominic Moore of the New
York Rangers are the finalists for the NHLs Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. The
league awards the trophy annually to "the player who best exemplifies the
qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey." Jagr, a Hart
Trophy winner back in 1999, had another strong season with New Jersey at the age
of 42. The Devils named the right-winger as the team MVP in 2013-14 after he led
the club in assists (43), points (67), plus-minus (plus-16), game-winning goals
(six) and shots (231). Malhotra, 33, was the Vancouver Canucks Masterton nominee
in 2011-12 after returning from a serious eye injury. Refusing to believe his
NHL career was over last fall, Malhotra signed a professional tryout agreement
with the Charlotte Checkers, Carolinas Ammerican Hockey League affiliate, on
Oct.
Colton Schmidt Bills Jersey. 3 and signed as
a free agent with the Hurricanes four weeks later. He appeared in 69
regular-season games, assumed a leadership role as an alternate captain and
ranked second among all NHL players in face-off percentage (59.4 per cent).
Moore, 33, returned to the NHL this season after taking a leave of absence in
the spring of 2012 in order to care for his wife, Katie, after she had been
diagnosed with a rare form of liver cancer. Katie passed away at the age of 32
in January of 2013. Moore established a charity in her name, and resumed his
career as an integral part of a Rangers team that earned 96 points and a
second-place finish in the Metropolitan Division. A US$2,500 grant from the
Professional Hockey Writers Association awarded annually to the Bill Masterton

Its arguably the first marquee event of every Winter Olympics, and the mens
downhill in recent Olympics has provided surprising storylines.
Nickell Robey Jersey . “The one thing about
the Olympics especially in the speed disciplines, it so very rarely goes to the
favourite, the favourite has so much pressure, and the variables are greater in
downhill,” says CBC alpine analyst Kerrin Lee-Gartner, a 1992 downhill winner. “
Its not to say its a flukey thing, its just that everything has to align right,
its harder for the favourite to make it align right in downhill.” In the last 20
years there have been four Olympic downhill winners who had fewer than three
World Cup victories before making history: Tommy Moe of the U.S., Frenchmen
Jean-Luc Cretier and Antoine Deneriaz, and 2010 winner Didier Defago of
Switzerland. The Canadian Cowboys - Erik Guay, Manuel Osborne-Paradis and Jan
Hudec - wouldnt qualify as surprise winners from an individual standpoint, but
breaking a 20-year Olympic medal drought for the country in alpine skiing
certainly would make fans take notice. No Canadian man has ever won a gold or
silver medal in alpine. Steve Podborski (1980) and Ed Podivinsky (1994) each won
bronze in the downhill. Guay is the likeliest contender to break through. Hes
achieved two of his three career goals after winning a Crystal Globe season
title in the super-G in 2010 and winning a world championship in downhill a year
later. The Mont-Tremblant, Que., native is only missing an Olympic medal,
preferably gold, after three separate top five finishes at the Winter Games.
Guay has battled back this season from a knee injury to break Podborskis World
Cup podium record for Canadian men. He finished seventh in the opening training
session on Thursday. Hudec, he of the seven knee surgeries and more recent back
injury, has also reached the podium this season. The Calgary native took silver
in the super-G in Val Gardena, Italy in December. Osborne-Paradis is waiting to
take that next step. Since coming back in late 2012 from a knee injury, the
North Vancouver native has had top 10 finishes, but has been unable to reach the
podium. Ben Thomsen of Invermere, B.C., finished second on a slightly different
Sochi course two years ago, but hes struggled mightily this season. There are two
strong international contenders to buck the recent trend of surprise Olympic
downhill champs. Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway, who won a medal of every colour
in Vancouver, has run his total of World Cup downhill wins to eight this season
with a pair of victories. Bode Miller of the United States has wowed ski fans
again this season, coming back at the age of 36 after more than a year off to
reach the World Cup podium once each in downhill, super-G and giant slalom.
Millers yet to win since his comeback, but coming up golden for a sixth career
Olympic medal would be just his style. The following men would also not be
surprise winners: Dominik Paris and Christof Innerhofer of Italy, Adrian Theaux
of France and Patrick Kueng of Switzerland. Even 36-year-old Didier Defago put
his name into consideration again after his first victory in over two years last
month, a super-G at Kitzbuehel. The lengthy course has received mostly positive
feedback from the skiers, with many remarking on the "big air" jumps. 2010

PHOENIX -- Bronson Arroyo had been one of baseballs most reliable pitchers
during his 15-year career, fighting off a variety of ailments to take the ball
every time his turn came up.
http://www.francenationalshop.com/Christophe-Jallet-France-Jersey/
. When his arm started to get sore and his velocity dropped, even he couldnt
keep going. The Arizona Diamondbacks placed Arroyo on the 15-day disabled list
with elbow tendinitis on Monday, ending the right-handers run of consecutive
starts at 369, the second-longest active streak behind the 443 straight starts
by Torontos Mark Buehrle. "Hes had other times in his career when hes been able
to overcome things like this, but it wasnt in the cards this time," Diamondbacks
manager Kirk Gibson said. Arroyo has had a solid career with stops in
Pittsburgh, Boston and Cincinnati. This off-season, he signed with the
Diamondbacks, who hoped he could provide some stability to the rotation. The
37-year-old struggled early in the season while trying to regain his strength
after injuring his back during spring training, but rounded into form over the
past month or so. Arroyo went 3-0 with a 2.95 ERA over his last three starts,
including a win over the Dodgers on Sunday, but had been using deception instead
of velocity to get hitters out. Arroyo is most effective when his fastball is in
the upper 80s, but his velocity had dipped into the lower 80s, forcing him to
work the corners and use more off-speed pitches. Instead of sending him out for
another start, the Diamondbacks decided to put him on the shelf so he could get
healthy again. "Its really unfortunate when its a guy who has an unblemished
record when it comes to posting up each and every time," Arizona GM Kevin Towers
said. "But it would have been hard to run him back out there again, going to war
as he says, against AK-47s with his little 22. He still found a way to win,
which was amazing." Arizona recalled outfielder Roger Kieschnick from Triple-A
Reno to fill Arroyos roster spot.

TORONTO - The Toronto Blue Jays have avoided salary arbitration with outfielder

undrafted Harvard graduates 109 points are the most by an NBA player in his
first four starts since the 1976-77 season, and he became the first player in
NBA history to tally at least 20 points and seven assists in each of his first
four starts. ANAHEIM, Calif. -- About two hours after Yoenis Cespedes made a
defensive play for the ages, Collin Cowgill decided not to watch while the
Oakland left fielder chased after his long drive in the 14th inning. Cespedes
couldnt do a thing about this one as Cowgill delivered another resilient win for
the Los Angeles Angels. Cowgill hit a two-out homer, and the Angels outlasted
the Oakland Athletics 2-1 on Tuesday night for their fifth consecutive victory.
The Angels bounced back after Cespedes kept it tied in the eighth with a throw
that will be a fixture on highlight reels for years, cutting down Howie Kendrick
at the plate with a 300-foot heave on the fly from deep down the left-field
line. After five ensuing scoreless innings, Cowgill abruptly connected against
Jeff Francis (0-1), driving a two-strike pitch just over Cespedes head into the
bullpens beyond left field. "I was just hoping it had enough on it to get it
over his head," said Cowgill, who had three hits. "That guy has made some
incredible plays on us the last couple of times." Josh Hamilton drove in
Mike Trout in the sixth for the Angels, who trimmed Oaklands lead in the AL West
to 2 1/2 games. The Angels could have ended it earlier, but Albert Pujols and
Kendrick both were thrown out at the plate -- although it was tough to blame
Kendrick after Cespedes made his mind-boggling throw in the eighth. "Hes capable
of doing just about anything on the baseball field, and thats just another
example," said Jed Lowrie, who drove in Oaklands only run. The Cuban left
fielder bobbled Trouts double and chased it down before his soaring throw went
straight to catcher Derek Norris to nip Kendrick, who had already rounded third
when Cespedes released it. "When that ball rolled to the corner, I thought Howie
was going to score standing up," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "He threw a
guided missile that was right on the money." Cory Rasmus (2-0) pitched two
hitless innings for Los Angeles maligned bullpen, which yielded one run in eight
excellent innings even without closer Ernesto Frieri, who had pitched in four
straight games. Nick Punto doubled and scored on Lowries sacrifice fly in the
eighth for the AL-leading As, who have lost four of six. "Hey, what can you
ddo?" manager Bob Melvin said.
Alexis Sanchez Chile Jersey. "They played as
hard as they could, both teams did. After a while, everybody is trying to win it
with one swing. Unfortunately, we werent at our best today offensively."
Pitching and defence dominated the latest meeting of Californias division
rivals. Neither starting pitcher allowed a runner into scoring position until
the sixth. Hector Santiago struck out eight during six innings of three-hit ball
in his first start in five weeks for the Angels. Drew Pomeranz pitched seven
innings of four-hit ball for the As, allowing only an unearned run. The Angels
got a terrific fill-in start from Santiago, recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake
after Tyler Skaggs went on the disabled list. Santiago lost his spot in Los
Angeles rotation May 7 after going 0-6, but the Angels off-season acquisition
from the White Sox limited powerful Oakland to three singles and one walk. "I
had clean mechanics and felt like everything was smooth," Santiago said. "Thats
what I went down there to work on, and the results came out." Santiago faced no
real trouble until the sixth, when he struck out Josh Donaldson to strand two
runners. Pomeranz yielded just two singles before Trout drew a leadoff walk in
the sixth. Pujols reached on a throwing error when Donaldson, who made three
throwing errors from third base Monday, tried to start a double play. Hamiltons
single scored Trout, but Pujols ran straight through third-base coach Gary
DiSarcinas stop sign and was easily thrown out at the plate. Oakland tied it
against reliever Mike Morin after Punto hit a leadoff double. After Cespedes
kept it tied, the As put two more runners on in the ninth, but Joe Smith got
John Jaso to ground out. NOTES: Angels rookie Cam Bedrosian pitched two extra
innings of one-hit relief. He is the 22-year-old son of 1987 NL Cy Young Award
winner Steve Bedrosian. ... Angels SS Erick Aybar swung and hit Norris in the
back of the head with his follow-through in the fourth. Baltimores Manny Machado
twice did the same thing to Norris last weekend, and the As were furious after
Machado expressed no remorse when Norris had to leave the game. Aybar
immediately checked on Norris, who was fine this time. ... Donaldsons three
throwing errors Monday all went to first base.

CANANDAIGUA, N.

.Y. -- The collision was as common as any in racing. Kevin Ward Jr.s car spun
twice like a top, wheels hugging the wall, before it plopped backward on the
dimly lit dirt track. In a sport steeped with bravado, what happened next was
another familiar, but treacherous, move: Wearing a black firesuit and black
helmet, the 20-year-old Ward unbuckled himself, climbed out of the winged car
into the night and defiantly walked onto the track at Canandaigua Motorsports
Park. He gestured, making his disgust evident with the driver who triggered the
wreck with a bump: three-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart. Ward, a relative
unknown compared to NASCARs noted swashbuckler, was nearly hit by another
passing car as he pointed with his right arm in Stewarts direction. As he
confronted Stewart in his passing car, disaster struck. Ward was standing to the
right of Stewarts familiar No. 14 car, which seemed to fishtail from the rear
and hit him. According to video and witness accounts, Wards body was sucked
underneath the car and hurtled through the air before landing on his back as
fans looked on in horror. Ward was killed. Stewart, considered one of the most
proficient drivers in racing, dropped out of Sundays NASCAR race at Watkins
Glen, hours after Saturdays crash. And the sport was left reeling from a tragedy
that could have ripple effects from the biggest stock car series down to
weeknight dirt track racing. "There arent words to describe the sadness I feel
about the accident that took the life of Kevin Ward Jr.," Stewart said in a
statement. Authorities questioned the 43-year-old Stewart once on Saturday night
and went to Watkins Glen to talk to him again Sunday. They described him as
"visibly shaken" after the crash and said he was co-operative. On Sunday,
Ontario County Sheriff Philip Povero said that investigators also dont have any
evidence at this point in the investigation to support criminal intent. But he
also said that criminal charges have not been ruled out. The crash raised
several questions: Will Wards death cause drivers to think twice about on-track
confrontations? Did Stewart try and send his own message by buzzing Ward, the
young driver, only to have his risky move turn fatal? Or did Ward simply take
his life into his own hands by stepping into traffic in a black firesutsuit on a
dark track? The only one who may have that answer is Stewart. David S. Weinsten,
a former state and federal prosecutor in Miami who is now in private practice,
said it would be difficult to prove criminal intent. "I think even with the
video, its going to be tough to prove that this was more than just an accident
and that it was even culpable negligence, which he shouldve known or shouldve
believed that by getting close to this guy, that it was going to cause the
accident," he said. The sheriff renewed a plea for spectators to turn over
photos and videos of the crash. Investigators were reconstructing the accident
and looking into everything from the dim lighting on a portion of the track to
how muddy it was, as well as if Wards dark firesuit played a role in his death,
given the conditions. Driver Cory Sparks, a friend of Wards, was a few cars back
when Ward was killed. "The timing was unsafe," he said of Wards decision to get
out of his car to confront Stewart. "When your adrenaline is going, and youre
taken out of a race, your emotions flare." Its often just a part of racing.
Drivers from mild-mannered Jeff Gordon to ladylike Danica Patrick have erupted
in anger on the track at another driver. The confrontations are part of the
sports allure: Fans love it and cheer wildly from the stands. Stewart, who has a
reputation for being a hothead nicknamed "Smoke," once wound up like a pitcher
and tossed his helmet like a fastball at Matt Kenseths windshield. "Ive seen it
many times in NASCAR, where a driver will confront the other one, and a lot of
times theyll try to speed past them. And thats what it appeared to me as if what
Tony Stewart did, he tried to speed past Ward," witness Michael Messerly said.
"And the next thing I could see, I didnt see Ward any more. It just seemed like
he was suddenly gone." The crash also raised questions about whether Stewart
will continue with his hobby of racing on small tracks on the side of the
big-money NASCAR races. He has long defended his participation in racing on
tracks like the one where the crash happened, even as accidents and injury have
put his day job in NASCAR at risk. Saturdays crash came almost exactly a year
after Stewart suffered a compound fracture to his right leg in a sprint car race
in Iowa. The injury cost him the second half of the NASCAR season and sidelined
him during NASCARs important Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship. Stewart only
returned to sprint track racing last month. The crash site is the same track
where Stewart was involved in a July 2013 accident that seriously injured a
19-year-old driver. He later took responsibility for his car making contact with
another and triggering the 15-car accident that left Alysha Ruggles with a
compression fracture in her back. "Everybody has hobbies," he said last month,
adding that "there are a lot of other things I could be doing that are a lot
more dangerous and a lot bigger waste of time with my time off do than doing
that." Greg Zipadelli, competition director for Stewart-Haas Racing, said
Stewart felt strongly he should not race after the wreck. Regan Smith replaced
him in his car. "Were racing with heavy hearts," Smith said.

perfect start against the Seattle Mariners. Holland, the Texas Rangers
25-year-old left-hander, was perfect for the first five innings and finished
with a five-hitter as the Rangers rolled to a 5-0 decision for their eighth
straight victory. It was Hollands fourth career complete game -- all shutouts --
his third this season and second straight. He went the route in his previous
outing July 7 against Oakland, a 6-0 decision. He is the first Ranger to throw
back-to-back shutouts since Charlie Hough had three straight Aug. 28-Sept. 7,
1983, two years before Holland was born. The last Ranger lefty to have
successive shutouts was Jim Umbarger (May 23 and 28, 1976). Holland (8-4), who
matched his career high for wins, retired the first 15 batters until walking
Franklin Gutierrez on a 3-2 pitch to open the sixth. He then lost his no-hitter
when the next batter, Chone Figgins slashed a single to right. "I just got
caught looking at the scoreboard at the wrong time," Holland said. "I got a
reminder when I walked that guy and the crowd started cheering. I knew I needed
to bear down. I gave up the perfect game but had to keep going from there." He
retired the next three batters to end the threat. He gave up a pair of singles
in both the seventh and ninth but also settled down and kept the Mariners off
the board. "Thats huge for me, part of the maturing process," Holland said. "It
was starting to build right there but I made my pitches where I needed to do and
the defence was making the plays. Im sure everyone else saw it (coming), but I
got out of it. Seventh and ninth, too." Mike Napoli, Josh Hamilton and
Nelson Cruz each homered for Texas. Jason Vargas (6-7) went six innings for
Seattle, allowing five runs, a season-high 12 hits. "Really the story was their
guy (Holland) and the way he pitched," Mariners manager Eric Wedge said, "and
what we did not do against him." Holland threw just 54 pitches in the first five
innings and the closest the Mariners came to a hit was Ichiro Suzukis slow-hit
bouncer to second baseman Ian Kinsler in the fourth. Kinsler raced to his left
and had time only too slap the ball with his glove to first baseman Mike Napoli
to beat Suzuki by a half step.

Miguel Olivo had two of the Mariners four hits. The Mariners have lost six
straight to fall 8 1/2 games behind the AL West-leading Rangers. "Thats two in a
row throwing the ball the way we know hes capable of throwing," Rangers Manager
Ron Washington said. "He had his breaking ball, he moved it around, he elevated,
he threw down, he moved their feet. He pitched very well tonight. "He was in
attack mode. Thats where he has to be. He has to attack with quality strikes,
not just throwing the ball over the plate." Hamilton got it started in the
first, hitting a 2-2 pitch into the right-field seats for his 12th home run.
Since May 23 when he came off the disabled list, Hamilton has a major
league-leading 43 RBI. Cruz hit a 1-0 pitch over the right-field wall in the
second for his 21st home run. Right-fielder Suzuki appeared to have a chance of
catching it, but hit his back on the wall to curtail his jump. Cruz also came
off the DL May 23 and has the second-most RBI (38) in the majors since then. "We
finished first half strong. Its good to start second half the way we started
today," Cruz said. "The way Holland threw is amazing. It look like he doesnt
need that many runs for support." Michael Young knocked in his 60th run in the
third, a two-out single to right scoring Elvis Andrus from second. Napoli
connected on his 13th home run, hitting a 1-0 pitch into the right-centre
bleachers in the fifth. Napoli has nine hits in his 23 at-bats (.391) since
coming off the DL July 4. Andrus added an RBI single later in the inning. NOTES:
The Rangers relievers struggled for much of the first half but Manager Ron
Washington believes the bullpen is turning the corner. "The way they are
pitching right now, it definitely can be an asset," he said. "Mark Lowe caused
that. Tommy Hunter caused that." ... Mariners manager Eric Wedge addressed the
players before the game, telling them, "expect a lot of yourselves, expect good
things to happen." He said the primary goal in the second half "is a more
consistent ballclub. Its a process. It takes time."
