TORONTO - No team in the NHL relies more on a core group to produce offence than
do the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Cheap Jerseys Wholesale NFL . Seven players
have combined for 84 per cent of the teams 74 goals this season, the highest
such percentage for any teams top seven scorers in the league. Alarmingly among
that group in Toronto are two centres, Dave Bolland and Tyler Bozak, who have
each missed a months worth of games due to injury already this season and yet
remain amongst the teams scoring leaders. The Leafs have dropped a season-high
five consecutive games, also losing six of the past seven while skidding through
an unhappy November that saw them win just twice in regulation. Prominent in
their struggles was a failure to produce offence at even-strength; theyve scored
just 18 such goals in the past 14 games, delivering two goals or fewer overall
in 11 of those games. Depth or a lack thereof has been the issue, both from the
defence and depth forwards. The Toronto blue-line has barely made a blip in the
cause offensively, totaling a scant three goals all season, two from
Dion Phaneuf and one into an empty-net. By comparison, the San Jose Sharks, who
beat the Leafs at the ACC on Tuesday, have 16 goals from their defenders this
season. Four Sharks alone have more goals individually than do the Leaf defence
as a unit. "When you describe our hockey club its always the back-end," said
Randy Carlyle following practice on Wednesday morning. "Does the back-end need
to provide more offence? For sure it does. We need more from our
back-end." Unlike last season, the team has also gotten little in the way of
contributions from its depth forwards. David Clarkson and Nik Kulemin have a
mere two goals apiece while Jay McClement, averaging nearly 17 minutes, has yet
to score and has just two assists. A fourth line with plenty of punch has been
predictably punch-less offensively, the likes of Colton Orr, Frazer McLaren,
Troy Bodie, Carter Ashton, and the since waived Jerred Smithson, all with zero
goals this season. Phil Kessel (15 goals), James van Riemsdyk (12), and
Mason Raymond (10), a late free agent add who sits third on the team in scoring,
have been responsible for the bulk of offence, helped by Nazem Kadri (7)
Joffrey Lupul (8), and the aforementioned Bolland (6) and Bozak (4). Injuries
and suspensions to core players, such as Clarkson, Bolland, Bozak and Lupul,
certainly havent helped with their replacements unable to fill the void. One
rare exception is Trevor Smith, who since being recalled to line up in an
offensive role, has produced six points in eight games. "We need more from
secondary scoring," Carlyle said. "Secondary scoring comes from your second,
third and fourth line. Weve noted that. Weve asked that." Among the desired
changes to the offence would be more shots to the net and more efficient
movement of the puck up the ice, thus instigating whats been an inconsistent
forecheck. Spending vast amounts of time defending, while struggling to break
out of their own end, the Leafs have been unable to establish that forecheck,
the lifeblood in some ways of the teams attack. "The one thing weve got to do
is weve got to get stronger on our forecheck," said Carlyle, pointing to brief
periods of such success against the Sharks, notably during an energetic start to
the season period. Generating much of their offence from a potent power-play
this season, if not the flash and dash of their skill players on the rush, the
Leafs have yet to produce much off their forecheck, thereby unable to sustain
time in the offensive zone in the manner Carlyle would like. "We have to start
being more fluent as a group of five," said Cody Franson, who leads the defence
with 13 points, but has yet to score this season. "Theres a couple things that
were doing systematically that are inhibiting our chances to one, generate
things off cycles, and two, generate shots from the point. Just a couple small,
little technicalities that are hurting us rather than helping us. Once we can
get fluent with correcting those I think thatll help out a lot." Team

football stadium that the St. Louis Rams call home is running out of money as
the NFLs team long-term future in the city remains murky. The publicly-funded
Edward Jones Dome anticipates needing an extra $40 million to cover maintenance
over the next 15 years, the St. Louis Post -Dispatch (bit.ly/1pGZkMd) reported
Wednesday. The St. Louis Regional Convention and Sports Complex Authority, which
owns the downtown dome, expects to exhaust its $16 million in savings in six
years. The dome receives a total of $24 million annually from the city of St.
Louis, St. Louis County and the state of Missouri for maintenance and to pay off
construction debt , but those payments are scheduled to cease over the next
decade. And the stadiums future remains in limbo as lease negotiations between
St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke and the stadium authority drag on. The Rams
can break their 30-year lease after the upcoming season, which would be a decade
early. Brian McMurtry, the authoritys executive director, is asking the three
governments to not only continue providing at least $4 million for annual upkeep
payments but to also consider sending the dome an additional $40 million in
cash, or selling $40 million in new bonds. Hes also suggested putting several
stadium-related items on the citys bond issue list for a public vote as early as
this November. "Im going to tell you, they dont know how theyre going to do it,"
he said. "But they want to know what its going to take." Dome maintenance is
almost entirely dependent on public dollars -- unlike Busch Stadium, a private
ballpark funded largely by the St. Louis Cardinals, and the Scottrade Center,
which is maintained by the ownners of the St.

local companies. To help entice the Rams to stay, the St. Louis Convention &
Visitors Commission, which manages the dome, in 2012 offered a $124 million
improvement plan that included a bigger scoreboard and better club seating, with
the Rams paying slightly more half those costs. The team countered with a far
more ambitious proposal that called for a new roof with a sliding panel and a
bevy of improvements that would keep the city convention centre in the dome
closed for three years. The team didnt put a price tag on its request, but city
officials estimated the upgrades would cost $700 million. "We cant come up with
a long-term solution until we know what the relationship is going to be with the
Rams," said Jim Shrewsbury, chairman of the stadium authoritys board. The
stadium authority sold bonds in 1991 to build the $300 million dome, which
opened in 1995. The sponsors agreed to a 30-year payment plan. The state would
send the stadium authority $10 million a year toward debt repayment, plus $2
million for upkeep. The city and county each would pay half of that. University
of Chicago economist Allen Sanderson said the conundrum facing St. Louis civic
leaders is not uncommon when it comes to paying for aging public sports arenas.
"Estimates of revenues tend to be overstated and costs played down, or at least
pushed off to the future," he said. "Youve got this combination, on the city
side, of public officials worried about the near future, not the long term, and
these sports franchises that have an enormous amount of market power. And thats
a bad combination for taxpayers."

Jose Bautista kept up his torrid start to the spring, hitting two doubles and
driving in two runs Thursday that sent the Toronto Blue Jays over the
Philadelphia Phillies 7-5. A day after hitting a long home run against the
Phillies in his first at-bat of exhibition play, Bautista had an RBI double in
the first inning off Philadelphia ace Cliff Lee. Bautista finished 2 for 2 with
a walk. The former two-time major league homer champion missed the final six
weeks last year because of a hip injury. Jose Reyes, Brett Lawrie and
Melky Cabrera also drove in runs for Toronto. "I thought we swung the bats
pretty good," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. Gibbons liked how many of
Torontos hits were up the middle or to the opposite field. "Against a lot of
lefties and things like that, you have to be able to do that and I think it was
progress for us," he said. Lee allowed two hits and a run in two innings. He
struck out three and walked none. "Obviously Im trying to throw strikes," Lee
said. "I made a couple mistakes. The first double was, for sure, a mistake. I
tried to throw a backdoor cutter and it ended up right down the middle." "And
then Bautista, I just missed on the pitch before and tried to throw the same
pitch. It wasnt a bad one, its just you get into a 2-2 count with him in that
situation is not where you want to be. He put a good swing on it." Philadelphias
offence was powered by a pair of home runs from bench hopefuls: Darin Ruf hit a
two-run shot in the third and John Mayberry Jr. had a solo drive in the sixth.
Blue Jays starter R.A. Dickey allowed one unearned run in two innings. He gave
up two hits, two walks and struck out two. STARTING TIME Phillies: Lee gave up
doubles to two of the first three batters he faced, then stopped the Blue Jays.
He is the odds-on favourite to start on opening day March 31 at Texas. Blue
Jays: Dickey got through an uneasy first inning to feel good about his spring
debut. The knuckleballer walked back-to-back batters with one out in his opening
inning. "Im feeling a lot better than I was at this point last year, so Im
hoping that will carry out through the rest of spring and opening day," Dickey
said. RUF RIDER Ruf hit a long home run off Esmil Rogers with one on and no one
out in the third inning. The shot was the first for any Phillies player this
spring. Ruf finished 1 for 3 with a walk. KNUCKLED Dickey worked with new
battery partner Erik Kratz for the first time this spring. Kratz, a catcher
acquired from the Phillies in a trade this winter, wore a first basemans glove
in an attempt to have a better chance at catching Dickeys arsenal of
knuckleballs. Kratz allowed one passed ball in the games first inning. "Its a
hard thing to do," Dickey said. "The game speed, and runners on -- its just
going to take some time. But I felt like he looked real comfortable back there.
Outside of the one passed ball, I felt like he handled it pretty well." TRAINERS
ROOM Philadelphia right-handed reliever Mike Adams threw off the mound for the
first time since undergoing shoulder surgery on July 31. He was limited to 28
games in his first season after signing a two-year, $12 million free agent deal
with the Phillies. The veteran setup reliever hopes to join the Phillies bullpen
at some point in April. "It went good -- really good," he said. "It was probably
an 85 per cent bullpen or so. I wasnt trying to let loose right off the bat. I
was trying to get a good feel for throwing off the slope again." Philadelphia
right-hander Ethan Martin, who entered camp competing for the fifth starters
job, left after facing four batters in the fifth inning with shoulder
discomfort. Hell be examined by the team medical staff on Friday morning. "He
was pain-free pitching, but the ball just wasnt coming out, throwing 85 miles
per hour," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said. "That was a sign for me to go
out and see what was going on."

anything past him after Carl Soderbergs goal 11:34 into the first period tied
the game at 1.The tie stood as McElhinney and Boston goalie Tuukka Rask
exchanged saves through the second and third periods until Calvert broke the
stalemate by backhanding in a rebound off a slap shot by Brandon Dubinsky.
Dubinsky got the Bruins to bite on a fake and had a full windup for a shot that
got through Rasks pads and hovered just outside the goal line before Calvert got
his stick on it.Boston pulled Rask for the extra skater and Calvert capitalized
with a shot from just inside the centre line with 38 seconds remaining.Rask, who
finished with 28 saves, was still fuming over Calverts first goal and stormed
straight to the tunnel after the final buzzer. Boston had allowed just six goals
during the five-game streak. It was night and day from the past whatever games we
played well, Rask said. We started a little slow and then we gained our game in
the first period. Then, the second and third we were just back to the old

first period, extending his franchise-record points streak to 13 straight
games.Soderberg tied it 11:34 into the first on a one-timer off a pass from Loui

.J. -- The New York Giants have agreed to terms keeping linebacker Jon Beason on

Parapan Games is running behind schedule, including a new Hamilton stadium, a
key venue thats now expected to be finished in September. The $145.7-million Tim
Hortons Field was slated to open this month, a year before it was to host all 32
mens and womens soccer competitions. The delay has forced the Hamilton
Tiger-Cats football team to use a smaller facility for the first two home games
of the season. "I havent heard from the Tiger-Cats about the Tiger-Cats making
an announcement. At the end of the day its the same sort of thing like here,"
said CFL commissioner Mark Cohon from Ottawa prior to the Redblacks home opener.
"Look at whats going to be here at the end of the day. Look at whats going to be
in Hamilton at the end of the day: A world-class facility thats going to be not
just for the next generation of fans but the next generation after that. People
are going to be blown away by that facility when its ready as well. Its taking a
little bit of time but people are going to be really happy with it when its
done." Completion dates for the Toronto track and field centre, a facility in
Markham, the equestrian park in Caledon and the shooting centre in Cookstown
have all been pushed back by a month or two. The ballpark in Ajax was supposed
to be completed by July, but phase two of the project is now expected to be
finished in November. However, all the venues are expected to be ready well
before the Games begin next July. "We had a significantly difficult winter this
past go-around, and I think you would understand the ball park being a challenge
when youre trying to put a playing field in when youve got frozen ground,"
Murray Noble, TO2015s senior vice-president of infrastructure, said Friday. "So
some of those projects were truly to do with the weather." The final phase of
the Caledon equestrian park was pushed back from December 2014 to February 2015
to make it easier for the right contractors to bid on it, he added. "All of our
projects continue to be tracking very well for completion before the end of the
year here, and certainly well within the time frames before the Games," he said.
Noble said he couldnt provide an exact date for the completion of the Hamilton
stadium, saying the question should be directed to Infrastructure Ontario.
Infrastructure Ontario says it aims to hold a meeting at the end of the month to
evaluate the status of stadium construction, which is currently more than 85 per
cent complete. Ontarios governing Liberals have been under fire for the stadium
setback, but say taxpayers wont be on the hook for any cost overruns. But the
Ticats are taking a financial hit for every game they cant play in the new
stadium, said New Democrat Paul Miller, who represents a Hamilton riding. The
team will have to use Ron Joyce Stadium at McMaster University, which has 6,000
permanent seats and temporary seating for another 6,000. Tim Hortons Field would
have 22,500 permanent seats and a potential capacity of 40,000 through temporary
seating. The province gave Hamilton $22.5 million for the stadium, which isnt
part of the Pan Am budget. "Whos going to cover that cost?" said Miller. "The
citty of Hamilton? Infrastructure Ontario? The Pan Am committee?" TO2015 CEO
Saad Rafi said questions about whether there would be any compensation for the
Ticats would best be answered by Infrastructure Ontario.

on the hook for this," said Progressive Conservative Todd Smith. Bad weather
should be factored into such big projects, he said. The government should just
admit publicly that preparations for the Games wont be finished on time or on
budget. But TO2015 said that the overall capital building program for the Games
is still in line with their budget. It spent $92.8 million in the quarter ending
March 31, including $66 million on venue construction during the three months
ending March 31, the organizing committee said Friday in its fourth-quarter
financial report. Venue construction spending is $387 million so far, about 53
per cent of the total original capital budget of $730 million, it said. It
includes $83.5 million for the Hamilton stadium, $148.4 million for an aquatics
and field house and $24.8 million on an athletics stadium in Toronto and $53.9
million for the Markham centre, which will host badminton, table tennis and
water polo competitions. Operating expenses during the quarter were $26.8
million, mostly spent in the areas of corporate, technology, transportation,
events and ceremonies and community and cultural affairs, it said. Corporations
have also put in an "incremental $43 million in value" worth of in-kind
sponsorships for delivery of the Games, the committee said. TO2015 said it has
spent $126.9 million to date, about 15.7 per cent of its total operations budget
of $810 million. It reported $4,159 in travel and hospitality expenses for the
quarter, bringing the total since last July to $23,136. Rafi said the Games are
expected to create 26,000 job and 84 per cent of the funding spent to procure
goods and services has gone to Canadian companies. The Games will take place at
34 different competition venues across the Golden Horseshoe, from Niagara in the
south to Orillia in the north, running from July 7 to 26, followed by the
Parapan Am Games Aug. 7 to 15. The Liberals have also been criticized for the
cost of security for the Games, admitting that the original $113 million built
into the Pan Am budget was just a best guess and it may climb above the latest
estimate of $239 million. TO2015 said it couldnt provide the latest figures,
saying it was in the hands of the Pan/Parapan Am Games Integrated Security Unit.
The report glosses over the construction delays, inflates the number of jobs
that will be created and doesnt mention the amount of money that will be spent
on security or transportation, Miller said. "Every time (the Liberals) talk
about it, they talk about the positive side of it," Miller said. "And thats
fine, but they dont talk about the hidden negative side and they dont want the
public to know that." The total budget for the Games, including security,
transportation and the athletes village is currently estimated at $2.5 billion.

Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some
memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.
Paul Goldschmidt Grey Jersey .ca. Hey
Kerry, Ill keep this short and sweet as Im sure Toronto fans will be flooding
your inbox, but last night Dion Phaneuf was given a tripping penalty on a player
who was offside. Why was he penalized? The opponent was offside and the whistle
would/should have been blown just before the trip. Thanks,John --- Phaneuf for
tripping - why was this a penalty? Was it because the trip happened before the
linesman blew the whistle dead? I thought that the linesman blew the whistle and
the trip happened after the whistle. Randy Carlyle seemed to accept the refs
explanation. Regards,Dallas --- Watched the Leafs beat Phoenix - wondering about
Dions penalty for tripping after the play was called offside? How is this even
possible to get an in-game penalty outside of the game play? If anything,
shouldnt it have been called unsportsmanlike conduct, which he would have gotten
had he gone up to someone and tripped them outside of game play? Justin John,
Dallas and Justin:Infractions that occur simultaneously with or after a stoppage
are typically penalized as though play was actually in progress. I could offer
many examples where penalties have been assessed during a stoppage in play
including just prior to a puck drop when players are lined up for a faceoff. The
rules are applied whether the game clock is running or not. However, rule 57
(tripping) is very specific in stating, "Accidental trips which occur
simultaneously with a completed play will not be penalized. Accidental trips
occurring simultaneously with or after a stoppage of play will not be
penalized." The optimum word in the rule is "accidental." This is intended to
allow the referee to exercise common sense and sound judgment in determining
that a trip occurring simultaneously with or after a stoppage would have
absolutely no bearing on the play. If however, a tripping infraction in the
opinion of the referee caused an attacking player from cleanly entering the zone
and therefore resulted in an offside at the blue line then the trip would in
fact have a bearing on the play and a penalty would be assessed. It was a
bang-bang play last night when Mike Ribeiro pulled the puck back and made a
shift just ahead of the blue line to avoid a Dion Phaneuf check. Ribeiros move
delayed the puck from crossing the line and caused David Moss to jump offside on
the right wing. Phaneuf then stuck his stick in the feet of Ribeiro causing the
Coyote to trip after the offside infraction had been committed and but a split
second before the linesmans whistle sounded. As a result, there should have been
no penalty assessed to Dion Phaneuf on the play. The wide camera shot
demonstrates that both referees immediately reacted to the trip by raising their
arms. The referee in the neutral zone can be seen giving a wash-out signal
because once the linesman blew his whistle he realized the play was offside at
the blue line. The other referee that made the call from deep inside the Leafs
end zone and on the opposite side to where trip had occurred did not pull back
on his first reaction to the trip and assessed the penalty. From his position,
the ref inside the zone must have deemed that the trip caused the offside and
the blue line and therefore should be penalized. I had a similar play one game
in Los Angeles when Terry Murray was coaching the Kings. A King forward carried
the puck across the attacking blue line. While the referee doesnt usually pay
close attention when an attacking team crosses the blue line I had a quick sense
that this entry looked offside but no whistle resulted. The attacker continued
to carry the puck a good fifteen feet inside the zone when a defender tripped
the King puck carrier. I raised my arm and as I blew my whistle I heard the
sound of the linesmans whistle being blown simultaneously with mine. I
approached the linesman and asked what had happened. He said the play was
offside and he was slow in blowing the whistle; 15 feet slow! There was no way
that I was going to penalize a team for a trip that had no bearing on the play
as a result of an offside that should have been blown down well in advance of
the trip. Problem was Terry Murray, the players on both teams and close to
20,000 people saw me raise my arm to call the obvious trip! I communicated my
decision and reasons not to assess the penalty to Murray. In spite of Terrys
protest that I couldnt take away a penalty that everyone in the building saw me
call my final decision stood. My last comment to Terry at the Kings bench was
that in the NFL it would be announced as an "errant flag". On this night in the
Staples Center he could consider it as an "errant arm"! I skated over to the
penalty box, clicked on my microphone and make the official announcement, "There
was no penalty on the play as a result of the offside at the blue line." The
linesman quickly dropped the puck in the neutral zone and it was "game on."
Common sense and sound judgment prevailed.

crowd threw garbage onto the ice in the final minutes when a key call went
against the Los Angeles Kings. The Anaheim Ducks dodged the debris and kept
moving toward the post-season with a gritty win over their biggest rivals.
Patrick Maroon scored the go-ahead goal, Frederik Andersen made 37 saves, and
the Ducks beat the Kings 2-1 on Saturday night for their third straight win in
the Freeway Faceoff. Andersen and the Pacific Division leaders barely held off
the Kings, who had a 38-20 shots advantage. An apparent tying goal by
Anze Kopitar was waved off with 6:23 left because of incidental contact with
Andersen, prompting Kings fans to litter the ice. The Ducks still showed
remarkable resilience in another bruising chapter of this rivalry. Tim Jackman
scored an early goal for the Ducks, who won back-to-back games at Colorado and
Los Angeles after a four-game skid knocked them from their longtime perch atop
the overall NHL standings. Anaheim leads San Jose by two points in the division
standings, and the Kings are well back in third place. "Its going to be tough
for the Kings to catch us now," Anaheim coach Bruce Boudreau said. "Were up 15
points on them with 14 games to play. They were playing so well. We didnt think
they were going to lose another game all year. It was important for us to come
in here and show we could measure up to them." Tyler Toffoli scored a power-play
goal and Martin Jones stopped 18 shots for the Kings, whose eight-game winning
streak was snapped Thursday by Toronto. Los Angeles had won each of Anaheims
last five visits to Staples Center since November 2011. The late-game
controversy added to the lively rivalry in the Southern California clubs first
meeting since their outdoor game at Dodger Stadium on Jan. 25. Kopitars shot
through traffic hit Andersens crossbar and apparently rattled in, but the
officials immediately waved off any goal, later announcing Andersen had been
hit. "The puck was in, but there was some contact," Andersen said. "I couldnt
really stop the puck. The ref did the right thing and made the right call."
Replays showed the puck barely crossed the goal line while Marian Gaborik and
Anaheims Jakob Silfverberg were next to Andersen. Los Angeles coach Darryl
Sutter leaned onto the ice to disagree, and the crowd made its displeasure
known. &"They called it that I touched the goalie before the puck went in,"
Gaborik said.
http://www.soccerwalesshop.com/gareth-bale-wales-jersey/.
"But I dont know, I havent seen the replay." Dozens of fans threw drinks, water
bottles and concession items on the ice, prompting a short pause in play while
employees with snow shovels removed the garbage. "I dont know why everybody is
getting wound up about that," Boudreau said. "They ran into our goalie. I
thought it should have been a penalty, frankly. ... Ive seen a lot less things
get called for penalties." Jackman put the Ducks ahead late in the first period
with his fourth goal of the season, coming out of the corner to score on a slick
pass from Mathieu Perreault. The Kings evened it on a power-play goal midway
through the second period when Jarret Stolls shot hit Andersens pads and went
straight to Toffoli for just his second goal in 26 games since Dec. 19. "I think
we didnt play the best that we could," Toffoli said. "But I think we know now
that the rest of the season here we have to play hard and play the right way."
Los Angeles hadnt scored against Anaheim in more than 148 consecutive minutes,
going scoreless against their rivals since Kopitars first-period goal early in
their last meeting at Honda Center, two days before Jonas Hillers shutout in
Chavez Ravine. Maroon put the Ducks back ahead on the games next shot just 1:09
later. Sprawling Kings defenceman Jake Muzzin deflected the puck past Jones for
Maroons first goal since Jan. 30. The Kings scratched captain Dustin Brown, who
played sparingly against Toronto on Thursday after Sutter said Browns entire
line looked tired. The U.S. Olympian missed practice Friday with what Sutter
said was an illness. Anaheim scratched U.S. Olympic defenceman Cam Fowler, who
incurred a lower-body injury Friday in Calgary. The Ducks also played without
43-year-old forward Teemu Selanne, who has sat out the back end of several
back-to-back sets this season. NOTES: New Anaheim D Stephane Robidas took the
pregame warmup, but didnt make his Ducks debut. The veteran blue-liner, acquired
March 4 from Dallas, is nearly recovered from a broken leg. ... Jones started
for the second time in three games after Jonathan Quick missed practice Friday
with an illness. ... Anaheims power play went 0 for 3, dropping to 2 for 42 in
its last 13 games.

While theyve yet to dive into CFL free agency, the Ottawa Redblacks signed a
former NFLer on Tuesday in wide receiver Limas Sweed.

round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2008, this will be his second go around
in the CFL after previously having spent time with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
The expansion Redblacks also made their first trade on Tuesday, acquiring
defensive lineman Justin Phillips from the Calgary Stampeders. The Stampeders
also sent their third-round pick (23rd overall) in the upcoming CFL draft to
Ottawa for the Redblacks third-round pick (19th overall) this year. Calgary also
gets Ottawas third-round selection in 2015. The six-foot-four 240-pound
Phillips, who is from the Ottawa suburb of Stittsville, spent the last seven
seasons in Calgary where he registered 78 defensive tackles, 78 special teams
tackles and four sacks. "We tried to get Justin during the expansion draft but
things did not work out then, but were glad to be able to acquire such a quality
player now," Redblacks general manager Marcel Desjardins said in a statement.
"Justin is an Ottawa guy and we believe hes going to thrive in this
environment." The 28-year-old played his university football at Wilfrid Laurier,
where he won the 2005 Vanier Cup. Phillips was selected fifth overall by Calgary

Game 162 of the regular season for the Detroit Tigers and their draining pursuit
of an American League Central crown. All the Tigers have to do is win Sunday
versus the Minnesota Twins in the finale of a four-game series at Comerica Park.
They are one game ahead of the Kansas City Royals for the AL Central lead, and
the Royals will close out their series with the Chicago White Sox this
afternoon. A one-game tiebreaker is on tap Monday if needed. Tasked with
pitching the Tigers to a division title will be David Price. He is 3-4 with a
3.97 earned run average in 10 outings with the club since coming over via trade
with the Tampa Bay Rays. Price is just 2-4 in his past six decisions and did not
factor in the outcome of a 4-3 win over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday, when
he yielded three runs in 8 2/3 frames. Price has allowed 14 runs in his last
four starts. The left-hander has faced the Twins 10 times (9 starts) in his
career and is 4-3 with a 2.84 ERA. Price, the 2012 AL Cy Young Award winner, is
2-1 in three meetings with Minnesota this season. The playoff-bound Tigers have
lost two in a row after winning three straight, and were hammered again by the
Twins in Saturdays 12-3 decision. Minnesota recorded an 11-4 victory Friday,
then kept it going in the third test of this set by rattling Detroit starting
pitcher Kyle Lobstein. Lobstein gave up six runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings
to suffer the loss and Nick Castellanos homered to go along with three RBI. Its
frustrating for sure, Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said of his clubs second
straight lopsided loss.

the Twins are out to play spoiler before they pack up for the winter. Eduardo
Escobar hit a two-run single in his second at-bat during a six-run fifth inning
and also clubbed a three-run homer. Escobar finished 4-for-5 with six runs

tossed six innings of two-run ball for the victory. Its always nice to play the
spoiler, Nolasco said, but we dont play this game to be the spoiler. We play
this game to be in their position. Their backs are against the wall, so well see
what happens tomorrow. Brian Dozier added a solo homer for the Twins, who hit 70
wins (70-91) for the first time since 2010, the last time they reached the
postseason. Minnesota will hand pitching duties to Kyle Gibson Sunday and the
right-hander has a 13-11 record to go along with a 4.50 earned run average.
Gibson is aiming for his third straight win and made it two in a row with seven
innings of one-run ball in a 6-3 victory over Arizona on Tuesday. Gibson, who
allowed 15 runs in his previous three starts, is 7-7 in 17 road appearances this
season and 2-2 with a 6.86 ERA in four career starts against the Tigers. In an
8-4 win over Detroit on Sept. 17, Gibson posted the triumph even though he
permitted four runs and seven hits in six innings. He will try to shake up
Detroits title hopes this afternoon. Minnesota is 10-8 against the Tigers this

. -- Andy Reid referenced Nelson Mandela, Sporting Kansas City and mangled a
metaphor about the Chiefs recent losing streak. Mike Shanahan looked like a
beaten man, one who might be counting down his final days with the Washington
Redskins. That was no thin line separating winning and losing when the Chiefs
beat the Redskins 45-10 Sunday. It was a chasm. The Chiefs (10-3) broke their
three-game skid by doing what they did so well during their 9-0 start -- beat up
on a bad team. They scored on their first four possessions, sacked
Robert Griffin III five times and Kirk Cousins once, and returned both a punt
and a kickoff for a touchdown in Sundays 45-10 rout. All of which prompted Reid
to go off-topic, even in his usual monotone. "Sporting KC, Im telling you its
hard to be a champion right? And they did it. Im proud of those guys," said
Reid, referring to the team back home that won the MLS Cup on Saturday. "I didnt
mention Nelson Mandelas death the other day, but what a tribute to mankind he
is." OK, but what about getting back on track after two losses to the Denver
Broncos sandwiched around a defeat to the San Diego Chargers? "Its tough to lose
three games in the National Football League, three consecutive games. It seems
like a year, those are dog years as you would say -- each week that you have a
loss in the NFL," Reid said. "For the guys to come back and rebound after that,
I was proud of that." Across the way, the Redskins were their usual drama
machine. They lost their fifth straight, and the stadium was virtually empty in
the second half. Its already far from certain as to whether Shanahan will return
for a fifth season, and now theres a report that he was close to quitting last
year because of his relationships with owner Dan Snyder and Griffin. "Its not
the right time or place to talk about my relationship with Dan Snyder, or its
not the right time and place to talk about something that happened a year ago,"
Shanahan said. "Ill get a chance to talk to Dan at the end of the season, and
Ill give some viewpoints from me, and Im sure hell give me his thoughts and what
direction well go." Shanahan did concede that Sundays loss -- the Redskins fifth
by double digits this season -- was his fault. "I didnt have the players ready
to play," Shanahan said. The first quarter was so lopsided that nearly all the
footprints in the snow were on one side of the 50. That discrepancy was quickly
corrected when the teams changed sides. The score was 38-10 at halftime.
Quintin Demps immediately answered the lone Redskins touchdown with a 95-yard
kickoff return that resembled at times a winter stroll, part of a stunning tally
of 321 return yards by Kansas City in the first half alone. Alex Smith completed
14 of 20 passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns. Jamaal Charles ran 19 times
for 151 yards and a score, and his 35-yard, right-then-left scamper was a
highlight of the second half. "You gotta go out there and play no matter what
kind of conditions outside," Charles said. "Sleet, snow -- you gotta go."
Tamba Hali and Tyson Jackson each had a pair of sacks, and Derrick Johnson set
up a touchdown with a 40-yard interception return. Dexter McCluster took a punt
74 yards for a score and set up another TD with a 57-yard return. Fans mostly
deserted Washingtons first snowy home game in decades, and those that stayed had
plenty to boo. The Chiefs took the opening kickoff and gained 8, 9, 22 and 13
yards on their first four plays. The Redskins were a team with nothing to play
for, and they looked like it. Shanahan eventually pulled the plug on Griffin,
inserting Cousins for the final quarter. "Its a terrible game to be a part of,"
Redskins linebacker Brian Orakpo said. NOTES: The runbacks by Demps and
McCluster gave the Chiefs 10 return touchdowns this season. ... Griffin went 12
for 26 for 164 yards with one touchdown and an interception. Alfred Morris ran
for 31 yards on 12 carries, putting him over 1,000 yards for the season. ... The

RW Radim Vrbata. CRANS-SUR-SIERRE, Switzerland -- Thomas Bjorn made a 12-foot
birdie putt on the first playoff hole Sunday to beat Craig Lee for the European
Masters title. Bjorn added to his title from 2011 after watching Lees attempt
from 15 feet slide left of the hole on the par-4 18th. Earlier, both players
missed 20-foot putts for the win in regulation on the foggy, rain-swept final
green following a 30-minute suspension for fog to clear. Bjorn, who waited out
the delay standing on the 18th tee, missed left and completed his round of
6-under 65. The Dane then watched on TV in the scorers hut as the 36-year-old
Lee of Scotland sought to clinch his first career title. Lee, who led by two
shots after his 61 on Saturday, had his putt catch the right lip of the hole and
carded a 67. Both finished with 20-under totals of 264. Victor Dubuisson of
France was third, one shot back after shooting 66. Bjorns 14th career European
Tour title was his first since winning here in 2011, when he closed with 62 to
also finish 20 under. The 42-year-old Dane earned prize money of 366,660 euros

Just like two years ago, Bjorn made a Sunday charge for the title in the thin
mountain air of the Swiss Alps. Bjorn fired five birdies in the first eight
holes, and added another at the par-5 15th in his bogey-free round. Indeed, his
entire tournament was a model of consistency with just two dropped shots and no
eagles in four rounds. Bjorn birdied the first and fourth holes Sunday, and
moved into a three-way share of the lead with another at the par-4 fifth. He
joined Lee and Alejandro Canizares of Spain, who eagled the easy par-5 first and
birdied the next two holes. Reaching the turn in 31, Bjorn led by two but missed
mid-range birdie chances at holes 11 and 12, as Lee made birdie at the par-4
12th. Bjorn found trouble at the par-5 14th, hitting his tee shot onto the 13th
tee box. He got a free drop and sank a 6-foot putt for par. Lee drew level at 19
under with a 25-footer for birdie at the 14th, then both contenders got birdies
at the 15th.

Nike Air Max 90 Herr Rea . This time he came

ninth inning Thursday to give the Marlins a 4-3 victory over the Philadelphia

he was mobbed by his teammates after rounding first base. "You know youre
probably going to get beat up a little bit out there, but its an awesome
feeling," he said. "I got horse-collared for a second, but thats all right. Ill
take it. Im glad I could win that one." The Marlins won despite squandering a
3-0 eighth-inning lead. They improved to 19-6 at home, best in majors, and have
scored a game-ending run in four of their past six victories at Marlins Park.
That gives them five walkoff wins this year, which is tied with the Pittsburgh
Pirates for the most in the majors, according to STATS. "Nobody wants to play
extra innings," manager Mike Redmond said. "We wanted to get that thing done
with and go out and have a nice meal." Miamis Henderson Alvarez threw seven
shutout innings, while Cole Hamels allowed three runs in seven innings. The
Phillies lost two of three in the series and are 20-24 going into an 11-game
homestand starting Friday. "Were so close for that sort of explosion to happen
and for everything to come together," Hamels said. "Its a matter of time before
it will happen, but I know personally it should happen soon." Philadelphias
Marlon Byrd tied it in the eighth with a two-run homer, his sixth. Miamis
Marcell Ozuna hit a two-run homer, giving him two homers and seven RBIs in the
past two games, and he threw out a runner at third from centre field. Ozuna also
started the ninth-inning rally. He singled with one out off Jake Diekman (2-2),
then took second on a two-out single by Jeff Mathis. Pinch hitter Reid Johnson
reached on an infield single that Diekman bobbled, sending Ozuna to third and
bringing Yelich to the plate. "Im thinking, Dont leave me here," Ozuna said. "He
did a good job." Yelich grounded a 1-1 fastball up the middle. "It was fitting
to get Yellie up there at the end," Redmond said. "He has been in a couple of
sits where he has had a chance to get a big hit and hasnt come up with one. I
was sitting there thinking, This would be a perfect day for him to get a big
hit, and sure enough he did." Marlins closer Steve Cishek (4-1) struck out two
with a runner at second to end the ninth. The Phillies went 1 for 7 with runners
in scoring position, with Byrds homer the lone hit. With the Phillies trailing
1-0, manager Ryne Sandberg let Hamels bat for himself in the seventh. He then
gave up a single and Ozunas eighth homer on an 0-2 pitch to start the bottom of
the seventh. Ozuna had been batting .113 in May before his breakout in the past
two games. "When he gets hot, hes as good as anybody," Redmond said.
Jimmy Rollins singled in the third to take over sole possession of second place
on the Phillies hit list with 2,218. He trails on Mike Schmidt, who had 2,234.

Game looks into the Canucks signing Ryan Miller. The Canucks Get: G Ryan Miller.
Miller, 33, was having a terrific season in Buffalo, posting a .923 save
percentage in 40 games before he was traded to St. Louis. From there, Miller
struggled down the stretch, with aa .903 save percentage in 19 regular season
games before an .897 save percentage in the first-round playoff loss to Chicago.
That finish might have dimmed his star somewhat, but Miller has a repuation
earned with a save percentage of .919 over the past five seasons, during which
no one has registered more saves than Millers 8278. That rep isnt everything,
though. Miller is a 33-year-old who last made it out of the first round of the
playoffs in 2007 and his .925 even-strength save percentage over the past four
seasons ranks 22nd out of 43 goaltenders to play at least 4000 5-on-5 minutes.
Following their abrupt playoff departure, the Blues changed their goaltending
approach, retaining Brian Elliott with the expectation that they would add
prospect Jake Allen to the tandem for next season. Whether Miller is at the peak
of his game isnt necessarily the point though, because hes an upgrade in net for
Vancouver; more proven than Eddie Lack or Jacob Markstrom, and thats what
matters for the Canucks over the next three seasons. If they are going to remain
competitive for at least a few more seasons, then the Canucs cant be stumbling
around with question marks in goal, hoping that it will work out. New Canucks GM
Jim Benning was instrumental to the Buffalo Sabres decision to draft Miller in
1999, so its not altogether surprising that Benning would turn to Miller to help
the Canucks now. Miller doesnt guarantee success for the Canucks, but if he can
provide at least average, or ideally above-average, goaltending, then the
Canucks have had good enough possession numbers to compete for a playoff spot if
they get decent goaltending. Scott Cullen can be reached at

Ottawas Kyle Turris, Bostons Patrice Bergeron and St.The Philadelphia Flyers
returned to the playoffs, for the 17th time in the past 19 seasons, where they
were eliminated in seven games by the New York Rangers. Off-Season Game Plan
looks at a Flyers team that has challenges going forward, as they try to fit
under the salary cap and try to maintain their hold on a playoff spot. New GM
Ron Hextall has lots of talent on hand, but has issues to face too. For one
thing, they ranked 23rd in puck possession last season and its not easy to
sustain success when the other team has the puck so frequently. Perhaps the
biggest issue to handle this summer will be what to do with Vincent Lecavalier,
last summers big free agent acquisition who fell flat after joining the Flyers.
A buyout would be awfully expensive, so maybe the Flyers could find team willing
to take on Lecavaliers contract while Philadelphia pays some of the salary. The
Flyers have enough skilled players, and young, developing forwards, that they
should still be decent on the attack. Then, there is the defence, where they are
faced with the prospect of losing their best defenceman, Kimmo Timonen, to
retirement, and are paying a lot of money to guys who arent pusing the puck in
the right direction when they are on the ice. It might be easier to convince
Timonen to play another season, to buy some time, rather than overhauling a
defence corps that needs improvement. Even once the lineup is sorted, Hextall
looks at a goaltending situation which remains a question mark. Steve Mason is
coming off a good year, his best since his rookie year of 2008-2009, but what
happens if Mason regresses towards his previous norm? Hextall appears to be
taking the long view to his new job. "I like young players and I like draft
picks," Hextall told CSN Philly. "My vision is to build this team and to
continue to make this team better through the draft. That doesnt mean we wont
make trades. At some point if its a good enough player, and weve got to trade a
young player, we may look at that. But its not a vision of mine to trade young
players for older players." With all of the decisions that Hextall gets to make
as a first-time GM, he has a team that will expect to make the postseason again
next year, yett hes walking a fine line, fine enough that a few wrong decisions
or even a couple of bad breaks could be enough to cost them. Of course, the flip
side is that the Flyers are close enough that a few sharp decisions and a few
good breaks could put them right back in the playoff mix again next season. The

goals and assists -- weighted for strength (ie. power play, even, shorthanded)
-- Corsi, adjusted for zone starts, quality of competition and quality of
teammates, hits, blocked shots, penalty differential and faceoffs. Generally, a
replacement-level player is around a 60, a top six forward and top four
defenceman will be around 70, stars will be over 80 and MVP candidates could go
over 90. Sidney Crosby finished at the top of the 2013-2014 regular season

surgery last August, it turned out that Claude Giroux wasnt in peak form to open
the season, and he started out with no goals and seven assists in the first 15
games, but Giroux was a force after that, scoring 79 points in 67 games the rest
of the way. Hes one of the premier power play point producers in the league and
no one has scored more total points in the past four seasons. Jakub Voracek has
emerged as a real offensive threat, a solid complement to Giroux on
Philadelphias top line. Over the past two seasons, Voracek ranks 23rd with 108
points and hes a skilled, big winger that can be difficult to remove from the
puck. Voracek, 24, also happens to be hitting his prime. Coming off a career
year, Wayne Simmonds had career-highs in goals (29), assists (31) and points
(60), while playing a career-high 16:46 per game. Hes missed nine games, total,
in six NHL seasons and only two players (Alex Ovechkin, James Neal) have more
than Simmonds 32 power play goals over the past three seasons. Hes not an ideal
possession player, but contributes plenty otherwise. A solid two-way player who
plays tough minutes, against quality opposition with more defensive zone starts,
Matt Read has also scored 57 goals in three seasons and played a career-high
18:48 last season. Hes valuable because he can play a variety of different roles
and ranked third among Philadelphia forwards in ice time per game. Read
frequently rides shotgun with Sean Couturier, the 21-year-old who plays a
shutdown role. He scored a career-high 39 points last season, but only three of
those points came on the power play, so there is potential for more offensive
production if he is given the opportunity. He had 96 points in each of his last
two junior seasons and scored 28 points in 31 AHL games as a 20-year-old, so the
pedigree is there for Couturier to take on a bigger role offensively, if he gets
the chance. Vincent Lecavaliers game went off a cliff last season. He had poor
possession numbers, despite offensive zone starts and relatively easy quality of
opposition; 37 points in 69 games was his lowest points per game since 2001-2002
and he ended up playing 15:11 per game, his lowest time on ice since his rookie
year, 1998-1999. Hes still under contract for four more seasons which is more
than a little problematic for a 34-year-old coming off a bad year. Austrian
winger Michael Raffl made a surprising jump to the NHL, almost directly from
Leksands in Swedens second tier, and while his production was modest, he had
respectable possession stats, which makes him a reasonable option as a depth
forward. Hes 25 and may not have enough offensive upside to fit higher on the
depth chart. Hes a physical presence on the fourth line, but Zac Rinaldo gets
buried in possession terms, and has seven goals and 470 penalty minutes in 165
career games. Among those lucky few who play enough to register at least 400
penalty minutes over the past three seasons, Rinaldos production is on the low
end. Jay Rosehill has fought 14 times in 45 games over the past two seasons, so
hes a heavyweight face-puncher, if thats required. Hes also put up eight points
in 117 career games and has been overmatched when it comes to puck possession,
which is why he ends up as a part-time player. Progress has been gradual for
Brayden Schenn, who did set career-highs with 20 goals and 41 points last
season, but he also had poor possession stats despite facing relatively easy
competition. It may be fair to wonder whether Schenn and Couturier are
blossoming as effectively as possible, as they both compete for playing time
down the middle behind Giroux. As the Flyers look to improve long-term, yet also
under some financial constraints, they could look to free agent wingers like
Mason Raymond, Benoit Pouliot or Radim Vrbata as possibilities to fit in a
scoring role without necessarily breaking the bank. Returning Defence Player

past seven seasons, there have been four defencemen to produce at least five
40-point seasons and one of them is Mark Streit, who missed one full season
(2010-2011) in that span as he recovered from shoulder surgery. Streit may not
be driving play, but the Flyers can do worse than getting respectable possession
numbers to go along with his offensive production. Its difficult to imagine what
the Flyers saw from Andrew MacDonald in 19 games to warrant a six-year,
$30-million contract extension, because MacDonald has been a puck possession
nightmare, whose with-or-without-you stats show that nearly everyone fares
better without him. There has been some evidence that his neutral zone defence
is an issue, and that would have to improve in order to give MacDonalds new
contract some value. Braydon Coburn hasnt materialized offensively the way that
might have been expected after a 36-point season in 2007-2008 but, as a big guy
who can skate and move the puck, hes been able to hold his own in a shutdown
role. The question going forward may be just how effective Coburn could be if
Kimmo Timonen doesnt return. Its pretty clear that, over time, Coburn has been
better with Timonen. Stay-at-home defender Nicklas Grossman scored a career-high
14 points last season and that indicates certain limitations to his game, the
same that are inherent to many stay-at-home defensive defencemen. Grossman gets
eaten alive in relative possession terms, yet he played more last season (1491
minutes) than he had in any previous season. This is the disconnect that comes
between old-school coaching and analytics that emphasize positive shot
differentials. After a decent showing in his first (lockout-shortened) season in
Philly, Luke Schenns game regressed dramatically. In six NHL seasons, Schenn has
alternated between having seasons with at least 21 minutes of ice time per game
seasons in which hes played fewer than 17 minutes per game. Last season saw him
play 16:32 per game and his per-game scoring rate (0.15 points per game) was the
lowest of his career. Even with that reduced ice time, Schenn ranked third among
defencemen with 260 hits last season, which means he didnt have the puck that
much, but the Flyers may need Schenn to handle a bigger role again in the
future. There are some holes on the Philadelphia defence. Maybe it was part of
the reason that they were so quick to sign MacDonald to an extension. A mobile,
undersized defenceman, Erik Gustafsson couldnt earn a regular spot on the Flyers
blueline and made the decision to sign in the KHL for next season.
Chris Pronger, while on the payroll, hasnt played since November 19, 2012 and
isnt going to play again. 39-year-old Kimmo Timonen could be on his way to
retirement, but it wouldnt be a surprise to see the Flyers or another team try
to convince him to keep playing. Timonen has been a stalwart on the Flyers
blueline, putting up strong possession numbers while facing top-tier opposition.
If he really is going to leave, that would create a significant hole.
Philadelphia could use a quality addition on defence even if Timonen returns, so
if Timonen leaves, might as well make it two. Free agents Sami Salo,
Anton Stralman or Raphael Diaz might help and taking a shot at top AHL
defenceman T.J. Brennan (from nearby Willingboro, NJ) might improve the Flyers
ability to move the puck from the back end. Returning Goaltender Player Rating

between counts as progress. Should the Flyers lose Ray Emery to free agency,
they will need to find a suitable backup for Mason. How much the Flyers will be
willing to spend will likely depend on cap space, but a veteran with some

in 2012, Scott Laughton has already played a handful of games for the Flyers,
and the gritty forward had a strong season in the Ontario Hockey League. He
should be able to challenge for a job next season. The 11th pick last summer,
Samuel Morin is a towering blueliner who could become an intimidating presence,
but he skates well for his size and has improving puck skills. A third-round
pick of the Flyers in 2012, Shayne Gostisbehere finished an impressive junior
campaign with national-champion Union College. Hes not big, but Gostisbehere can
skate, move the puck and work the point on the power play. Taken in the third
round in 2011, Nick Cousins is a two-way centre who went through a learning
process in his first pro season. Hell need to get stronger and continue to
improve if hes going to take the next step, but the 20-year-old can play a
feisty game that should endear him to the Flyers. Acquired from Carolina in
January, 2013, Mark Alt is defenceman with good size and physical game who had a
solid first pro season, during which he saw power play time and played a big
role in the AHL. A second-round pick in 2012, Anthony Stolarz has posted a .924
save percentage in 55 OHL games since leaving Nebraska-Omaha. At 6-foot-6,
Stolarz has prototypical size, yet hes a 20-year-old goaltender so its likely to
take some time before hes ready to mount a challenge for an NHL job. Drafted in
the second round last summer, Robert Hagg is a steady defensive defenceman who
joined Adirondack late last season after a solid season in the Swedish Hockey
League. He could use time to develop, but Hagg holds promise as a well-rounded
blueliner. Undrafted winger Jason Akeson has forced his way into consideration
for a spot with the Flyers, after scoring 172 points in 208 AHL games over the
past three seasons. He took a regular spot in the Flyers top nine in the first
round of the playoffs, and had respectable possession stats to show for it.
Power forward Tye McGinn was a fourth-round pick in 2010. Hes scored seven goals
and 10 points in 36 NHL games since, and had 34 goals and 61 points in 100 AHL
games over the past couple seasons. A fourth-round pick in 2012, Taylor Leier is
a skilled two-way forward who plays on a powerhouse Portland team and has
improved steadily over three WHL seasons. Signed as a free agent after he failed
to come to terms with the Columbus Blue Jackets, Petr Straka has some offensive
upside and was okay in his first pro season. Hell need to produce more to
warrant further promotion. Undrafted out of the Western Hockey League,
Brandon Manning is making it hard to ignore his contributions, racking up
penalty minutes to go with improving point totals. Flyers advanced stats and
