If Canada defeats Russia in tonight’s gold medal final of the World Junior
Hockey Championship, there will horns honking all across this land and
celebrations from downtown Toronto all the way to the oceans in both directions.

. A win tonight will be celebrated alongside all the other great moments of the
Canada-Russia hockey rivalry and the heroes from this year’s tournament will be
cast into part of Canadian hockey history. And if Canada disappoints and loses?
Well, there be some very tough questions that should be asked about how a team
that was so dominant throughout the tournament could stumble in the biggest game
on home ice. But there will also be those who will suggest we have no right to
criticize, that these are simply teenagers trying their best, that they’re just
kids and we all ought to button our opinions and get our priorities in order.
What a bunch of bunk. Here’s the deal with this tournament - you can’t have it
both ways. You can’t say that this tournament is a marquee event on the Canadian
sporting calendar, one worthy of our undivided attention, sky-high ticket prices
and television rights, but we’re only supposed to take it seriously if we win.
We can’t say that we’re allowed to make these kids heroes, but not goats. Face
it - this event is elite sport and nothing less. A good number of these kids
have already been drafted by NHL teams, some have cashed sizeable signing-bonus
cheques and the rest have advisors and agents and programs in place to maximize
their earning potential at the professional level. This is not just an
extra-curricular activity and there’s no point trying to pretend these are just
teenagers playing for fun and, therefore, there should be no room to criticize
them. A lot of these players are the same age as many of those who will
participate in next week’s College Football Playoff National Championship
between Oregon and Ohio State. Is anyone saying the players on those teams
should be insulated from being critiqued because they’re teenagers? Is anyone
saying we’re not allowed to say Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston was
brutal against Oregon on New Years Day because he happens to be 20 years old?
The days of the World Junior tournament being a quaint little affair ended a
long time ago. This is a big-time, high-performance elite sporting event. Anyone
who doesn’t realize that has no business being part of it. So get ready to
celebrate … a Canadian win will result in this year’s team being showered with
praise, as they should be. But a Canadian loss resulting from a mediocre
performance tonight? There’s absolutely nothing wrong with making the coaches
and players accountable for that kind of result, as well.

calls for a $10 million signing bonus payable upon approval of the contract by
Major League Baseball. Guerrero would earn $4 million in both 2014 and 2015, and
$5 million in both 2016 and 2017.
Cheap Nike Free Flyknit . David West scored
25 points, Paul George added 22, and the Pacers beat the Utah Jazz 94-91 on
Sunday night. Indianapolis native Gordon Hayward had 21 points and
Derrick Favors scored 17 for the Jazz, nine of them in the first eight minutes
as Utah opened a 14-4 lead. MANCHESTER, England -- Wayne Rooney scored twice as
Manchester United came from behind to beat Aston Villa 4-1 in the Premier League
on Saturday as fans came out in support of struggling manager David Moyes at Old
Trafford. It looked like being another miserable day for Moyes when Ashley
Westwood put Villa in front from a 13th-minute free kick. But Rooney headed
United level seven minutes later, and the striker netted his 16th of the season
for the struggling champions from the penalty spot before halftime. The lead was
extended in the 57th when Juan Mata scored his first United goal since joining
from Chelsea in January for 37.1 million pounds (then $61 million), and
substitute Javier Hernandez wrapped up the victory in stoppage time. "We had to
respond and it was difficult," Rooney told BT Sport television. "We had a slow
start, going behind, but we came through it and got the win and deserved it. It
was a good win for us. "We know the support the manager has got from the players
and from the fans and thats what matters. The support he got from the fans was
incredible again today." United wont have long to savour the victory as a far
sterner test comes up at Old Trafford on Tuesday with the visit of European
champion Bayern Munich. Winning the Champions League is Uniteds only realistic
hope of returning to the competition next season as it is in seventh place --
far from the four qualification spots. United maintains that Moyes future is not
under threat during the uneasy transition following 26 years under Alex
Ferguson. The start of the game had fans looking to the sky when a
much-publicized plane flew overhead with a banner emblazoned with "Wrong One -
Moyes Out." Just one person, who said he is a United fan, has claimed
responsibility for the stunt with no supporters groups backing the protest. In
fact, fans inside the ground were supportive from the start for Moyes despite
back-to-back league losses at home to Liverpool and Manchester City, booing as
the plane flew overhead. That faith was ttested when Westwood put Villa in
front.
Buy Nike Roshe Run Online. Rafael da Silva
barged over Villa striker Christian Benteke on the edge of the box to earn a
booking and Westwood responded by sending a dipping free kick over the wall and
beyond stretching goalkeeper David de Gea. The home fans went silent. The only
noise heard inside the ground came from the plane, which was still buzzing
around above the stadium, and the Villa fans, who proclaimed Moyes as a
"football genius." But Rooney sparked the comeback, finding space in the box and
getting on the end of Shinji Kagawas pinpoint cross to head past Brad Guzan. The
England striker would have had a second soon after had it not been for a
last-ditch tackle from Ciaran Clark and some impressing defending from Ron
Vlaar. United had increased the pressure on the away side, but the hosts still
lacked quality and imagination in the final third. Too often it was a case of
hit and hope for Moyes men. The game seemed destined for a halftime stalemate
before Mata was brought down in the Villa box by Leandro Bacuna and Martin
Atkinson pointed to the spot. Rooney held his nerve to power the ball to Guzans
left and the home crowd started to relax. At the start of the second half,
substitute Michael Carrick stuck his boot in to deny Villa striker Christian
Benteke after the Belgium striker completely missed the ball going for a volley.
Benteke missed another chance soon after, heading over from six yards while
unmarked. But then Buttners header found Marouane Fellaini in the Villa box and
he clumsily worked the ball to Mata, who struck past Guzan. The sense of relief
was clear on Moyes face. Benteke missed yet another easy chance, this time
shooting wide from close range, again unmarked, before Hernandez made no such
mistake in turning home fellow substitute Adnan Januzajs cross at the end. "Of
course at times we havent done as well as wed like, and we didnt start the game
well today," Moyes said. "But the crowd were brilliant the way they got behind
the team."

.Y. - The Toronto Marlies will have to wait to lock up their third-straight
North Division title after falling 5-1 to the Utica Comets on Friday in American
Hockey League action.CALGARY - The Calgary Flames were sellers heading into
Wednesdays NHL trade deadline, but buyers had yet to open their wallets a day
out. The showiest items on Calgarys lot were forwards Mike Cammalleri and
Lee Stempniak. Both will be unrestricted free agents this summer. Interim
general manager Brian Burkes theory for slow business was shoppers were
temporarily preoccupied elsewhere. Other forwards said to be on the market were
New York Rangers captain Ryan Callahan, Vancouver Canucks forward Ryan Kesler,
Matt Moulson of the Buffalo Sabres, Ales Hemsky of the Edmonton Oilers and
Thomas Vanek of the Buffalo Sabres. "I think theres a logjam thats been
presented or created by two, three, four players thats going to paralyze the
rest of the league," Burke told reporters Tuesday at Scotiabank Saddledome.
"Youll see other deals happening but I think the hold up for a high-end forward
has kind been captivated by two, three, four players. "I think were on the
backburner for a lot of teams right now. Doesnt mean nothing is going to happen,
but thats where we are today. "Weve been in discussions with every team in the
league and what theyre trying to do. We have some unrestricted free agents we
will move if the price is right. Im not close on anything that makes sense for
us." Trade speculation in Calgary has centred on Cammalleri, but with a record
of 23-31-7 and destined for a fifth straight season out of the playoffs, the
only Flames that Burke considered off limits were captain Mark Giordano and
rookie sensation Sean Monahan. "When youre in the place we are in the standings,
your list of untouchables should be either nonexistent or tiny," Burke said.
Burke, the Flames president of hockey operations, stepped in as interim GM when
he fired Jay Feaster on Dec. 12. He intends to hire a new GM. But Burkes mandate
is to speed up Calgarys rebuild by whatever means necessary: trades, spending to
the cap or the signing of free agents. "You cant be waiting for the next guy,"
Burke said. "Were going to do what we can to improve. If that means theres a few
less decisions for the new guy, thats fine. "The dynamic of the trade deadline
is, you want to show your players first and foremost, if youre close, you want
the room to feel youve done something to add. You want the players to believe
management is trying to make the team better." Only the Buffalo Sabres have
scored fewer goals than Calgary in the NHL this season, but uupgrades are needed
both up front and on the blue-line.

Cammalleri, 31, scored 39 goals and had 43 assists as a Flame and a linemate of
Jarome Iginla in 2008-09. Cammalleri is in the final year of a five-year
contract paying him $6 million annually. With the right linemates, Cammalleris
offensive skills and experience make him an attractive rental for a playoff
push. "Things change very quickly in the business," Cammalleri said. "When it
comes to that, I think you understand why certain things take place and why they
might be thinking along certain lines. "I feel my best hockey is ahead of me and
I feel great about my game. Whether its here, or whatever happens, Im not
concerned about my ability to help my team out." Stempniak, also 31, is in the
second year of a two-year deal that counts $2.5 million against the salary cap.
He has eight goals and 15 assists in 52 games this season. His wife gave birth
to twin girls following the Olympic break and he could be on the move Wednesday.
"I know thats a very likely possibility and have sort of braced myself for
that," Stempniak said. "Ill either get a phone call or I wont get a phone call.
"It could be two big life changes in the span of five days, but its part of the
business. Thankfully on the family front, everything is going well there and
everyone is healthy. Thats the most important thing. Whatever else happens, you
think you can deal with it." Defenceman Chris Butler, whose salary is $1.7
million this season, is also scheduled for unrestricted free agency in July.
Burke said he prefers adding a player who can upgrade the Flames immediately
over acquiring draft picks. Calgary has a healthy dose of cap space to take on
unwanted contracts as part of a deal as well. "I hope to be up here in a year
talking about buying players, not selling players. Were selling," Burke said.
"That being said, if we can salvage a hockey deal out of this were going to do
that. "If we can turn our cap space into assets were going to do that. It could
be a very important day for the franchise, the next 24 hours, but its not the
same as when youre adding to try to make a push." The Flames host the Ottawa
Senators on Wednesday. Coach Bob Hartley said Joni Ortio will get the start in
net. Ortio was called up from Abbotsford, B.C., when goaltender Karri Ramo
injured his knee Feb. 2. Ramo skated Tuesday for the first time since the injury
prior to Calgarys optional skate.

PORTLAND, Ore.
Camiseta Iker Casillas España . - The
Portland Trail Blazers have had few breathers during this seven-game homestand,
but Saturday nights finale seemed well on the way to an easy victory.Portland
caught Orlando short-handed and riding a five-game losing streak. The Blazers
were rolling early, and the Magic couldnt shoot straight. Portland was about to
coast to a victory when Magic centre Nikola Vucevic got hot and extended the
Blazers for four quarters before they secured a 103-92 win.LaMarcus Aldridge hit
10 of 22 shots and scored 25 points to lead Portland (29-8). The Blazers tied
Golden State for most wins in the NBA this season.Vucevic made 15 of 23 shots,
scored a career-high 34 points and grabbed 16 rebounds. But he couldnt stop
Orlando (13-27) from losing its sixth consecutive game.As has often been the
case during Portlands 6-1 homestand, the Blazers needed a big fourth quarter to
pull out the win. Wesley Matthews scored 10 of his 18 points in the fourth,
including two free throws that gave the Blazers the lead for good at 87-85 with
3:56 remaining.Portland appeared on its way a rout at the outset, as Orlando
made just 5 of 22 shots during the first quarter, and trailed by as many as 19
in the first half. Then the Blazers eased up, Vucevic took over and the Magic
often had Portland on the ropes in the second half.It was a great start for us,

did for granted and they took advantage of that, Portland guard Damian Lillard

James Reimer gets the call in net as Canada opens up its World Championship
group stage play on Friday against France. You can catch the action live on TSN
at 9:30am et/6:30am pt. Coach Dave Tippett says he made the call of Reimer over
Edmonton Oilers goalie Ben Scrivens, Reimers former teammate, strictly due to
seniority. Its expected that both goalies will split time at the tournament in
Belarus with Scrivens likely seeing action in Canadas next game on Saturday
against Slovakia. Reimer last played for Canada at the 2011 World Championships
in Slovakia, posting a 4-0 record in the group stage. Jonathan Bernier, now
Reimers teammate with the Leafs, was preferred for Canadas quarterfinal game and
dropped a 2-1 decision to Russia. This is Scrivenss first time representing
Canada at any level. Meanwhile, Kevin Bieksa was named Team Canadas captain on
Thursday. Coach Dave Tippett said Bieksa got the nod because hes outgoing but
also plays hard and with passion. Jason Chimera is one alternate because he
brings the experience of winning at this tournament before and Kyle Turris is
the other because he bridges young and old on the roster. One thing Canadas
leadership group has in common is a love for keeping things light on the ice.
Thats part of what Bieksa thinks his role is, but he also expects his teammates
to take the tournament seriously. "Just to keep guys loose having fun and then
focused for the games," the Vancouver Canucks defenceman said. "Everybodys
coming over here for a purpose. We didnt fly all this way just to have a good
time. We flew here to win games and to continue on the standard that Canada set
at the Olympics. Were going to come to compete." At 32, Bieksa is the
fourth-oldest player on the team, younger than only Chimera (35), Joel Ward (33)
and Alex Burrows (32). There are also a handful of very young players, including
Nathan MacKinnon (18), Sean Monahan (19), Jonathan Huberdeau (20), and
Mark Scheifele (21). Bieksa is in charge of helping meld this diverse group
together. "Its been pretty seamless so far. Everybody brings something to the
table," Bieksa said after practice at Chizhovka-Arena. "The young guys are young
and (add) a new perspective and energy and the older guys, theres some guys that
have played in this tournament a few times and they know what to expect and you
lean on them for some advice. Its a good mix." Chimera is Canadas only player
with an IIHF World Hockey Championship gold medal, won in 2007 in Moscow. His
message to a lot of his teammates is that they never know when theyll be able to
wear the Maple Leaf again. That could be true of Chimera, too, and if it is the
Washington Capitals winger is making sure he enjoys it. Even with two children
at home, his wife was supportive of him coming to Minsk to play in his third
world championship. "Hockey keeps you young," said Chimera, whos 4 1/2 years too
young to be able to play without a visor. "Its just awesome, you see these young
kids, how talented they are, they keep it light.
Camiseta Paco Alcacer. . A lot of them were
pretty nervous coming over here, but I try to keep it as light as possible."
Thursdays first practice in Minsk following an exhibition game against
Switzerland in Zurich was light but up-tempo. Tippett and assistants Paul
Maurice and Peter DeBoer had plenty of teaching to do a day before Canada opens
the tournament against France. James Reimer will start against France, while
Ben Scrivens is set to start against Slovakia on Saturday night. "It goes solely
off seniority," Tippett said. "Scrivens was upset because he thought he shouldve
got the call because he had 19 seconds longer than Reimer the other day (in the
exhibition game)." Reimer is playing at the world championships for the second
time after going 4-0-0 in 2011 before being replaced by now-Toronto Maple Leafs
teammate Jonathan Bernier. With Scrivens -- whos now with the Edmonton Oilers --
on board this time, Reimer is sharing the net with a former teammate. Come the
start of the 2014-15 NHL season, he very well could have another goaltending
partner if the Leafs trade the restricted free agent. Reimers season in Toronto
didnt go as he planned, and its only natural for him to think scouts and general
managers will be watching him in Minsk. "I assume so. I think theyre scouting
everyone," Reimer said. "I think everyones taking a peek at whoever might have a
contract up or might not, thats what theyre here to do. Any time youre playing,
especially in a different situation, theyre watching to see how you react and
respond. But in every NHL game theres scouts and GMs watching, too. Its just one
of those things wherever youre playing competitively, people will be watching."
Theres plenty for Tippett to watch for early in this tournament that could
affect his plan going forward. On Thursday he kept the top line of Burrows,
Turris and MacKinnon together from Tuesdays exhibition game and tinkered
elsewhere. Nazem Kadri centred Cody Hodgson and Troy Brouwer, while Philadelphia
Flyers teammates Brayden Schenn and Matt Read skated with Huberdeau. Chimera and
Capitals teammate Ward remained together, and Tippett said hell keep an eye on
having either Scheifele or Monahan between them. Because this tournament is such
a "scramble" with so little preparation time, Tippett is just trying to get
create some chemistry before the first puck drop. "Youve got to get your players
in roles early," he said. "Always subject to change, but I think one of the most
important factors of a tournament like this is you try to get everybody in their
spots as quick as you can." That starts with establishing Bieksa as captain.
Burrows voiced support for that choice because his Canucks teammate is good at
bringing people together. "He keeps it fun, he likes to have a good time,"
Burrows said. "But at the same time when its time to work and do the right
things, hes the first one to lead the way."

CINCINNATI - The stadium was only two-thirds full again.
John Miller Bills Jersey . The Cardinals were
on another one of their incredible comebacks, threatening to derail the
Cincinnati Bengals surprising playoff surge. A pair of tangled up feet made the
difference. The Bengals moved one win away from the playoffs Saturday, holding
on for a 23-16 victory over Arizona that secured only their third winning record
in the past 21 years. Cincinnati (9-6) can clinch the final AFC wild card berth
by beating Baltimore at Paul Brown Stadium next Sunday. The Bengals moved a game
ahead of the Jets, who fell to 8-7 with a 29-14 loss to the Giants on Saturday.
"Its been a big year for me and for this team," rookie quarterback Andy Dalton
said. "Its something we believed we had a chance to do. We werent getting much
credit from outside. Well find out next week." Dalton threw two more touchdown
passes, becoming only the fourth rookie to have 20 in a season, and Cincinnati
got a break when the NFLs top comeback team tripped itself up in the closing
minutes. Wide-open receiver Early Doucet tripped at the goal line and went down,
letting a fourth-down pass fall incomplete with 1:12 left. The Cardinals (7-8)
got the ball one more time, but the clock ran out after a completion. A few
minutes later, the Jets loss put the Bengals in position to reach the playoffs.
New York would have won the tiebreaker if both teams won out. "We started this
quite a while ago — seems like just yesterday," coach Marvin Lewis said. "But
now were right where we want to be at the end." Their rookie quarterback put
them in position. Dalton threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Jermaine Gresham and
a 19-yarder to Jerome Simpson, who did a somersault over a defender and landed
on both feet in the end zone. Dalton joined Peyton Manning (26), Charlie Conerly
(22) and Dan Marino (20) as the only NFL rookies to throw 20 touchdown passes.
Down 23-0 heading into the fourth quarter, the NFLs best comeback team nearly
pulled off its most improbable one yet. Arizona took advantage of Cedric Bensons
two fumbles, getting a pair of touchdown passes by John Skelton and Jay Feelys
field goal with 3:16 left. The Cardinals then had their chance to pull even. The
Bengals ran an all-out blitz on fourth down from the Cincinnati 17-yard line,
and Doucet wound up uncovered at the goal line. Skelton lofted the ball into the
end zone, but Doucet tripped and fell. "It was a blitz and nobody was there,"
Doucet said. "It was one of those deals where I hadnt hooked it up and my feet
got tangled. Its a play I shouldve made. It was my fault. Thats a play I
normally make." The Cardinals had their four-game winning streak snapped and
were eliminated from playoff contention. Cincinnatis defence dominated the first
three quarters. Arizona didnt cross midfield until Skelton completed a pass with
13:25 to go, but piled up 208 yards in the final quarter. Skelton started for
the second consecutive week in place of Kevin Kolb, who hasnt fully recovered
from a concussion. Skelton was 23 of 44 for 297 yards with three interceptions
and five sacks that helped the Bengals get the 23-0 lead. It could have been
worse. Mike Nugent, the NFLs most accurate kicker, missed field goals of 35 and
48 yards in the first half. Arizona has rallied from fourth-quarter deficits six
times this season, one shy of the NFL record. The Cardinals have won three games
in overtime, tying the league record. They couldnt do it one more time. "Yeah,
were a second-half team," Skelton said. "Thats how it has been all year. But in
the end, it was too little, too late." Dalton was 18 of 31 for 154 yards and two
touchdowns on a sunny, 39-degree afternoon in front of only 41,273 fans. The
Bengals have sold out only one of their seven home games, when the Steelers
brought thousands of fans. Daltons second touchdown pass had a highlight finish.
Simpson got open for a catch-and-run to the goal line. With Daryl Washington
between him and the end zone, Simpson jumped and twirled past the linebacker,
landing on both feet in the end zone and raising both arms like a triumphant
gymnast. "One of the key parts for me was I stuck the landing," Simpson said. "I
stuck the landing like a gymnast. That was probably one of the most surprising
of all the plays in my career. It was pretty awesome, I thought." For most of
the game, the Cardinals couldnt do anything right. Rookie cornerback
Patrick Peterson picked off a Dalton pass in the third quarter, but the
interception was nullified by Arizonas second roughing-the-passer penalty of the
game. Worse, Peterson hurt his left hamstring on the play, pulling up on the
return. The first-round pick left the game and didnt return. He wore a
protective boot after the game. "Hes got a strain, its not a tear," coach Ken
Whisenhunt said. "Were fortunate that it doesnt appear to anything long term."

Texan Stacy Lewis at 7-under 135, putting the Americans a stroke behind leaders
Meena Lee of South Korea and Caroline Masson of Germany after two rounds in the
North Texas LPGA Shootout. With a 65 on Friday, Gulbis had her first sub-70
round this year. "I havent played a lot this year, and I havent played very well
in the events Ive played in, so it felt really good to get a good round in the
60s and to get around making some birdies," Gulbis said. "It felt more like how
I played at the end of last year, which I hadnt seen yet this year." Masson, who
led after the first two rounds of the inaugural North Texas event last year
before tying for 15th, had five birdies and a bogey for her second 67. Lewis,
the No. 3 player in the world, had a bogey-free 64 to match Lee for the best
second-round score at Las Colinas Country Club. Lewis had four consecutive
birdies before finishing with seven straight pars, and Lee played her first nine
holes -- the back nine -- without a par. "I didnt really do anything really
crazy different from yesterday other than I putted a lot better, but just played
really solid," said Lewis, who had her sixth runner-up finish last week in San
Francisco since winning the Womens British Open in August. " I felt nice and
relaxed out there, so it was a nice day." After her round, Lewis was headed to
hit some balls with her 3-year-old nephew wearing a shirt that read, "My aunt is
a better golfer than yours." In the last five LPGA events, Gulbis has a
67th-place finish while missing three cuts and withdrawing from the Hawaii
tournament two weeks ago. The newlywed has completed only 17 rounds this season
while dealing with the baalky wrist.
Adidas Ultra Boost Pas Cher. "I had a really
great off-season. I had a lot of time to work on my game and I felt really good
coming into the season, and then I got hurt in like the second or third event of
the year and took some time off, so thats been a bummer," Gulbis said. "But I
had a really nice off-season, so Ive been trying to fall back on the work that
my coach and I did." Christiana Kim (69) was alone in fifth at 6 under, one
stroke better than first-round leader Suzann Pettersen (71) and four other
players. Pettersen had a birdie at the par-5 third hole before consecutive
bogeys and then a steady string of pars until a closing birdie. "I gave myself a
lot of good looks for birdies, just couldnt make much. Good conditions," said
Pettersen, in her only second tournament since missing a month with more back
issues. "All good, no complaints." Also at 5 under were Julieta Granada (66),
Dewi Claire Schreefel (66), Cristie Kerr (70) and Dori Carter (70). Lee, who won
the last of her two LPGA Tour titles in 2006, started Friday with an eagle-3 on
the 510-yard 10th hole. She followed with a bogey, consecutive birdies, another
bogey, three birdies in a row and then a bogey on the par-5 18th. Her scorecard
for the front nine was much cleaner, with birdies on Nos. 3-5 and only pars
aside from that. She started the tournament Thursday with a double bogey on the
very first hole. "Im happy to be done with the second round. Im really happy,"
said Lee, who has her best 36-hole score this season. Top-ranked Inbee Park, the
defending champ in North Texas, was 3 under after a 68. Michelle Wie was 2 under
after rounds of 67 and 73. She won the Hawaii tournament. Lexi Thompson, the
19-year-old American playing for the first time since become a major champion
the first weekend in April, followed her opening 70 with a 71 to reach 1 under.
Seventy-four players made the cut, which was 2 over. There will be a second cut
after Saturdays third round to the top 50 and ties.

BOSTON -- Putting together a five-game winning streak and getting 10 games above
.
Nike Free
Flyknit Australia .500 were once common achievements for the Dallas
Mavericks. Now, both are season highs as Dallas slowly works its way back into
playoff contention in the Western Conference. Dirk Nowitzki scored 20 points,
Shawn Marion finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and the Mavericks beat the
Boston Celtics 102-91 Sunday night to extend their winning streak to five
straight. "There are encouraging signs, but theres no way we can exhale or start
feeling good," coach Rick Carlisle said. Jose Calderon added 18 points and
Monta Ellis played through a sore hamstring and scored 11 for Dallas, which won
for the sixth time in seven games and pulled 10 games above .500 for the first
time this season at 31-21. "Were looking to move up," Nowitzki said. "If you
look at the standings, (places) five through eight is only separated by a couple
of games. Wed love to keep pushing." Vince Carter scored 14, Devin Harris had 12
points and Samuel Dalembert grabbed 11 rebounds for Dallas. The Mavericks led by
six at halftime and pulled away in the third quarter by outscoring the Celtics
28-18. "The third quarter and the start of the fourth killed us and took us out
of the game," Boston coach Brad Stevens said. Rajon Rondo had 15 points, 12
assists and eight rebounds for Boston, which had won three straight games.
Jeff Green scored 18 and Jared Sullinger had 11 points and 12 rebounds for the
Celtics. Boston managed to stay close through the first half despite shooting 27
per cent, then Dallas took command early in the third quarter and pulled ahead
by as many as 24 points before the Celtics rallied when it was too late. "We
still kept it close. That was the beauty of it," Sullinger said. "We played
hard, but they just got away and the deficit was so big we couldnt dig ourselves
out of that hole." The Mavericks opened the second half on a 16-5 run, holding
the Celtics to two field goals through the first 6:29 of the third quarter. A
3-pointer by Green got Boston within 53-43, but Calderon answered from beyond
the arc and Marion and Dalembert followed with layups to extend the Mavericks
lead to 60-43. "In the third quarter, we were doing the same kind of defence,
but now we were sharing the ball and making open shots and thats what the
difference was," Calderon said. Bostons only scoring run in the period was a 4-0
spurt late on layups by Kris Humphries and Kelly Olynyk, which Dallas negated in
the last minute on two foul shots by Harris and an alley-oop from Harris to
Brandan Wright with 5 seconds remaining to give the Mavericks a 72-56 lead
entering the fourth. Wright opened the fourth with another alley-oop from
Carter, who added a layup for Dallas eighth point in a row and the Mavericks
lead was up to 76-56. The Celtics put together a late run to make it close down
the stretch before running out of time. Rondo and Green hit back-to-back
3-pointers to pull Boston within 96-84 with 2:25 remaining. Johnson added
another 3-pointer with 1:18 to get the Celtics within 98-89, but Calderon hit a
layup to put the Mavericks back up by double-digits. NOTES: Olynyk finished with
14 points and Humphries scored 10 for Boston. ... Marion got his seventh
double-double of the season. ... The Mavericks had one other four-game winning
streak this season, but had reached five beating Utah on Friday and Boston on
Sunday. ... Rondo was the only Boston starter to make more than two field goals
in the first half with four. ... Nowitzki scored 15 in the first half. ... The
Celtics shot 27 per cent (13 for 48) in the first half and opened the third
quarter 2 for 10.

on Tuesday night for their sixth consecutive victory. Coco Crisp hit an RBI
single and stole his 16th base and Nick Punto doubled in a run during a four-run

a collision with second baseman Joe Panik. Oakland did all its damage that
inning on the way to matching its season-high winning streak. The As (57-33)
concluded their homestand 6-0, just the 11th undefeated homestand of six or more
games in Oakland history. The low-budget club with baseballs best record has won
11 of its past 12 games at the Coliseum. Gray (9-3) reached eight or more
strikeouts for the fourth time in seven impressive innings, having struck out
nine twice. He is on a nice roll after losing back-to-back starts to the Orioles
and Yankees on June 7 and 13. It was an impressive first start against the
Giants for the right-hander in his first full big league season. He showed his
poise on the big stage facing the Tigers twice in last falls five-game AL
division series loss. The As have outscored the Giants 11-1 in the first two
games of the Bay Bridge Series following a 5-0 win Monday. The interleague
series now shifts across San Francisco Bay to AT&T Park for two. San
Francisco avoided being shut out in consecutive games for the first time since
July 28-29, 2012, against the Dodgers at AT&T Park. Yet the Giannts lost for
the 11th time in their past 13 games at Oakland dating to the 2010 season when

LAKE LOUISE, Alta.
Penny Hardaway Jersey . -- Manuel
Osborne-Paradis talks of learning more about himself and of taking care of his
body to extend his career in ski racing. All very adult, but he hasnt completely
outgrown the man who celebrated the Calgary Stampede two years ago by climbing
on the back of a party bus and falling off. He sustained road rash on his bottom
severe enough to put him in the hospital. Winning downhill races requires
recklessness, so Osborne-Paradis isnt willing to let the foolhardy part of
himself disappear completely. "You cant kill that," he says. "You can scrape a
bit of him off, but you cant kill him." His Canadian teammate Jan Hudec doesnt
want to see it disappear either because that devil-may-care ingredient is
necessary when attempting speeds that are literally breakneck. "We all hope he
has pre-road rash Manny left in him," Hudec said. "Besides the personality and
the energy it brings to the team, I think its part of his winning attitude. "Im
a little bit the same way. I live my life pretty loosey-goosey by the seat of my
pants. I dont plan ahead, but it works for me for skiing. Thats how I race as
well. I live in the moment. Manny is fairly similar that way." Erik Guay, Hudec
and Osborne-Paradis are the Canadian downhill teams decorated elder statesmen at
the season-opening World Cup in Lake Louise, Alta. John Kucera would also be
included in that group if the Calgarian wasnt sidelined with an inner ear
condition. The downhill is Saturday followed by Sundays super-G. Training was
cancelled Thursday because of a power problem affecting the lift to the start
hut. Repairs didnt leave enough time to get 91 racers from the top to the
bottom, although the competitors were able to free ski the lower sections of the
course. Guay had the fastest time in training Wednesday, with Osborne-Paradis
and Hudec also in the top 10. Guay and Hudec, both 32, and Osborne-Paradis, 29,
have stood on World Cup podiums multiple times during their careers. Theyve
morphed from guys who just wanted to ski fast to men running their individual
ski empires of businesses, sponsorships and charities. "Business, families,
girlfriends, fiancees, wives, we didnt even know what those words were and how
to use them five years ago," Osborne-Paradis says. "You know, young and dumb.
Its a different time of your life. Theres guys who are 36 in the race and theres
guys who are 20 and you can totally tell the difference." How to square their
adult responsibilities with a certain disregard for their own safety on the
mountain is a balancing act, says Hudec. "I think the older you get, the more
cherished it becomes and you put it in your backpack in a safety deposit box and
you carefully bring it to the hotel and youre like dont lose this. Its my
recklessness. If I lose this, Im screwed," Hudec explains. "You have to leave it
at home when you go to the store or your business and youre telling people to be
responsible and be on time. They cant know youre that person on the hill. Its
actually a really funny challenge." Vancouvers Osborne-Paradis returned last
season from a catastrophic knee injury suffered in January, 2011. Hudec, from
Calgary, has undergone seven knee surgeries, including six on the same knee.
Injuries plant seeds of doubt that have to be overcome in the start hut. Bravado
helps get past the mental barriers to 130 kilometres per hour. "I think theres a
lot of fear, but you learn to adapt to that," Osborne-Paradis says.
"Recklessness for sure, its the only way to win. "You can ski pretty and have a
good run and come 20th your whole career if you wanted to. To win, you need to
be taking chances and you need to risk the fact that you might end up in the
(safety) nets. Thats the only way to win." The 2014 Winter Games in Sochi,
Russia, are just weeks away and this could be the Olympic swan song for some of
Canadas veteran downhillers. Osborne-Paradis says he has never worked so hard to
prepare for a season of racing. "Ive taken the initiatives and worked better
with my sports psych, better with my biofeedback, better with stretching and
mobility," he says. "The stuff that, as you get older, makes more a difference
than going out and grunting. "As you get older, you need to learn how to stay in
the game and stay active in this sport. You take your knowledge and your history
of running all the courses and use that to your advantage and build up a better
mental capacity of what needs to be done at each event. To get to know yourself
a little bit more makes you a better athlete." Similar to NHL goaltenders who
donate money to a charity for each shootout they earn, Osborne-Paradis has come
up with a strategy for Right To Play, the international organization that
empowers children facing adversity through sport. Osborne-Paradis wears Right To
Plays logo on his helmet instead of a corporate brand. Through his business
contacts, hes raised an initial $25,000 for the organization. More will be
donated for top-10 or podium performances he achieves this season. A win, for
example, is worth another $15,000 contribution. If Osborne-Paradis attracts a
headgear sponsor this season, he intends to wear Right To Plays logo on his
suit. He would exponentially increase the bonus money to the organization, so a
win would be worth $30,000. "Obviously theres the personal drive of achieving
your goals, but when youre skiing for a cause bigger than yourself, the better
you ski and the faster you ski and the more other people will benefit from
that," he says. "Its a great feeling and on those off days it really helps you
push through the cold weather and the fear of racing or whatever."

energy levels up and try to get a win Friday, he added. The Jets coaches and a
handful of players were on the ice Wednesday but things will get more serious
Thursday as the squad gears up for another important game against a Western
Conference rival.Although theyve gone 4-5-1 in their last 10 games and lost 4-2
to Edmonton on Monday, the Canucks (27-18-9 before playing Chicago on Wednesday)
are at least currently where the Jets want to be — holding down the eighth and
final Western Conference playoff spot. The Jets stand 12th, eight points behind
the Canucks before Wednesdays action. They have plenty of distance to cover and
not much time to do it as they head into the Olympic break. After Fridays game
they play four more road contests before the Olympics, then return Feb. 27 at
the MTS Centre. But with the hiring of new coach Paul Maurice, the Jets have
already done some surprising things in a relatively short period of time. They
earned road wins over both the league-leading Anaheim Ducks and defending
Stanley Cup-champion Chicago Blackhawks have won six-of-eight games with Maurice
behind the bench. And neither Jokinen nor Maurice viewed Tuesdays loss as a step
backwards from the kind of defensive zone game hes trying to teach. This
defensive zone concept, its not like you write it on the board you get it and
you go and theres your defence for the rest of your life, its a work in
progress, Maurice said. There wasnt a letdown (Tuesday night). They werent

a game open.Maaurice said players are starting to see things and there are fewer
questions coming back.

will have a long layoff and while Maurice says hes had experience with Olympic
breaks, with a young team like the Jets it might be different. The last time I
went through an Olympic break that I remember, we ended up going to the final
(2001-02 with Carolina) and came out fast and quick, Maurice said. We had a
bunch of guys . . . that were older, fit men who used that break to rest but
came back roaring.Maurice said veterans like former Carolina Hurricanes captain

structuring anything that is mandatory for our players.Maurice isnt worrying
about the four Jets heading to Sochi, Russia.Theyre going to go and play at a

jerseys . Louis Cardinals, the team will be celebrating the 25th
anniversary of the opening of the SkyDome. Jays legends Jimmy Key and Ernie
Whitt, members of playoff and World Series-winning teams of the past, will be on
hand for the festivities to look back at what was the beginning of the Jays
halcyon years. The return of these former stars comes at an apt time. For fans
of the Blue Jays, its starting to feel a lot like those glory days again.
Heading into Fridays game, the Jays sit at 37-24 with a five-and-a-half-game
lead on the second-place Baltimore Orioles. The last team the Blue Jays held
such a lead atop the division was in 1985, the year of their first-ever AL East
triumph. Its easy to see why theres excitement surrounding this Jays team, but
before everybody goes and books their flights to San Francisco for the World
Series in October, lets step back and take a good look at these Toronto Blue
Jays. Is it time to stop saying "Well, its early" and officially deem them
contenders? Is the 2014 version of the Jays just the 2013 one that was expected
all along, but a year late on arrival? Or will reality catch up with a team that
is currently playing above its station? Friday night marks Game 62, and an even
100 games remain in the regular season. While its not exactly the halfway mark,
its as good a time as any to reflect on the interesting dichotomy of the Jays
season, thus far. Obviously, there have been plenty of key performances from the
top of the roster on down. Mark Buehrle leads the league in wins with 10 and has
a paltry 2.10 ERA. Edwin Encarnacion launched 16 jacks in May and made every
at-bat a must-see event. Jose Bautista is in the midst of an MVP-calibre season.
Melky Cabrera has bounced back from offseason surgery and looks headed to
another All-Star Game. Jose Reyes once again looks like the catalyst he was for
the New York Mets. Picked up from the Milwaukee Brewers scrap heap,
Juan Francisco is one of the five Jays with double-digit home run totals. There
is a lot to like right now. But before the Jays were sweeping the likes of the
Detroit Tigers and Oakland Athletics and tearing the cover off the baseball with
reckless abandon and going 17-4 over its last 21 games, this team was once a
very average 20-20. Its bullpen is still second-last in the bigs with a 4.62
ERA, having surrendered a league-worst 97 earned runs. Now second in the AL with
19 home runs, Encarnacion couldnt buy a hit in April and had just two homers.
Reyes, Adam Lind and Casey Janssen missed significant time. Brandon Morrow and
Colby Rasmus are down again. There were red flags all over this team not that
long ago, but those have been seemingly swept aside in a tidal wave of
power-hitting and timely pitching. Has this changed your expectations for the
rest of the year? With April and early May indicating that the team was headed
for another year of mediocrity, the fact that the Jays are division-leaders with
the third-best record in baseball in June is quite frankly shocking. But wasnt
this the Toronto Blue Jays team that was promised last season after a winter of
major trades and free agent acquisitions? Maybe this run that the Jays are on
isnt the aberration. Perhaps, last season and the beginning of this year was the
outlier. Regardless of why its happening and how long it will last, the Blue
Jays are currently playing meaningful baseball and its a welcome change for fans
starving for a winner. So with 100 games left in 2014, just who are these
Toronto Blue Jays and what happens from here on out? As always, its Your Call!

had to take a chance on Stamkos being healthy, since they would be unable to add
him to the roster later on. "If hes healthy hes one of the 25 best players,

. -- Hockey fans in Brandon only needed to show up for one period, and the Wheat
Kings made it count. MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The Memphis Grizzlies are headed on a
three-game road trip with a better grip on the Western Conferences final playoff
spot. Marc Gasol scored 19 points, Zach Randolph added 18 points and 12 rebounds
as the Grizzlies defeated the Portland Trail Blazers 109-99 on Tuesday night.
The victory kept Memphis in the conferences eighth spot with a one-game edge
over the idle Phoenix Suns. But players are not satisfied with the current
position. "Even though we are in, we want to be higher," guard Courtney Lee
said. "Were still chasing, and I think thats the right mindset to have going
forward because if you continue to chase, youll never get complacent and fall
off." Mike Conley added 17 points and Lee finished with 16. Mike Miller had 14
for Memphis, which won its third straight. Damian Lillard led the Trail Blazers
with 32 points on 8-of-21 shooting from the field, but connecting on 12 of 13
free throws, including six in the fourth quarter when he was fouled on a pair of
3-point attempts. LaMarcus Aldridge had 19 points and 10 rebounds, while
Nicolas Batum contributed 15 points for Portland, which lost its third straight,
matching its longest skid of the season. Memphis built its lead to double-digits
early in the fourth quarter and Portland got it under 10 -- to nine -- on only
two occasions the rest of the way. The common refrain from the Trail Blazers was
it was "just one of those nights." "They would just get a tip ball or a loose
ball and they would hit a 3 with it," Lillard said. "It was just one too many of
those situations." While Memphis heads on a road trip to New Orleans, Toronto
and Philadelphia holding the final playoff spot, Portland sits in the
conferences fifth slot. Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts was pleased with the
way his team competed and shooting 22 of 29 from the foul line. "I thought we
had a lot of shots we normally make," Stotts said. ";We took care of the ball
(eight turnovers).

We got to the free-throw line. We were aggressive. "I thought it was just one of
those nights." Portland struggled from the field, connecting on 41 per cent for
the game. In addition to Lillards percentage, Aldridge was 8 of 23 and Batum was
5 of 13. Wesley Matthews managed only one field goal on seven attempts. "I think
he had good looks," Stotts said of Aldridges shooting. "But you cant make them
every night." Aldridge considered it just part of a shooting slump that will end
at some point. "I am going to find my rhythm, and I am going to make those shot
Ive been missing soon. It will get a lot better," he said. The Grizzlies, who
shot at least 50 per cent in each quarter, finished the night at a season-best
56 per cent including 6 of 12 from outside the arc. Memphis held a 54-47 lead at
the break, but Portland was close despite shooting 41 per cent. The Trail
Blazers gathered nine offensive rebounds for 10 second-chance points. Memphis
stretched the lead back to 15 to open the second half, and kept the advantage
through the middle stages of the quarter. Lee was the catalyst for Memphis,
scoring 13 in the quarter, a difference, he said, of not playing as passive as
he had in the first half. "Coaches and my teammates were telling me to go out
and be more aggressive," Lee said of the second half. "You dont have to tell me
that twice." The Trail Blazers closed the stanza on a 10-4 run to cut the lead
to 78-69 entering the fourth. After Nick Calathes connected on a 3-pointer to
open the fourth period, Memphis had its double-digit lead back. NOTES: Memphis
