CLEVELAND -- Finally, at long last, the Browns have a date to name their
quarterback.
James McCann Jersey . Decision day is Tuesday
for Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel. Thats when Browns coach Mike Pettine aims to
announce his starter for Clevelands Sept. 7 opener at Pittsburgh. His choice
could be influenced by how the quarterbacks play in Monday nights nationally
televised exhibition at Washington. "Something unforeseen could come up, but
were hopeful because I do want to see if I can cut the quarterback questions
down by about 90 per cent after next week," said Pettine, a first-year coach who
for months has faced questions about his quarterbacks. "The chemistry, the
continuity, its important to establish that." On Thursday, Pettine said Hoyer
will start against the Redskins on Monday night, with Manziel getting snaps with
the first-team offence. Pettine isnt sure how hell divide their time and will
see how the game unfolds before determining when each is on the field. His focus
is making sure the "reps are close to equal." Pettine also made it clear no
decision has been made. "All of our options are still on the table," he said.
Does that mean Manziel, the popular rookie who helped the Browns draw record
crowds to training camp, can still win the job? "Sure he can," Pettine said.
"All of our options are still on the table. He just needs to go out and play,
thats the bottom line. They both do. Ive met with both of them and discussed the
situation and theyre both comfortable with it and they both know its going to be
up to them, when theyre out there, to go out and do their job." As he has stated
for months, Pettine will choose the quarterback he feels gives the Browns their
best chance to beat their bitter rivals. "Youre looking for the total package --
the quarterback who is best suited to take the field and lead us to a win
against the Steelers," Pettine said. "Thats the bottom line decision we have to
make. There will be a lot of things going into it." Pettine said he will consult
with offensive co-ordinator Kyle Shanahan, quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains
and maybe "another guy or two in there." General manager Ray Farmer will be
there "to listen and observe." Hoyer started Clevelands preseason opener at
Detroit, with Manziel playing exclusively with the backups. Pettine isnt
disappointed with the way the quarterbacks have played or that one hasnt taken
off and separated from the other to make the decision easier. "They both started
camp at a certain point and theyve both made improvement," he said. "I think
theyve both made big strides. When you look at it, I feel like were in a good
position, we have two quarterbacks that we feel have NFL starter ability, which
is why its a difficult decision." Whatever decision is made, Pettine knows its
far from permanent. "So much can change over the course of an NFL season, the
circumstances," he said. "Thats one position where you probably have to have a
little more patience that others whether a guy is not performing at a level you
think he can. I dont want whoever the starter is to feel like If I make one
mistake, Im out. I dont want them to feel like, Hey, Ive achieved something and
this is my team for the year." Pettine would not confirm or deny a report
Manziel was late to a team meeting this week. "Thats internal business," he
said. "Im not going to discuss stuff that happens. We like to keep stuff in the
family." NOTES: After being "tagged" by the Ravens and Jets, Pettine and several
players took the ALS "ice bucket challenge" following practice. Manziel had two
buckets dumped on him. ... Pettine also had a comment for New York coach Rex
Ryan, saying, "Rex, I know you want to punch me in the face. Anytime you want to

seriousness. .... Pettine said DL Desmond Bryant (wrist) is waiting for a second

MIAMI -- Zack Wheeler and the New York Mets got the best of Andrew Heaney during
the Marlins prospects major league debut.

. Wheeler tossed his first shutout and made David Wrights first-inning home run
hold up in the Mets 1-0 victory over Miami on Thursday night. "He showed you
exactly what weve been talking about all along -- plus stuff. Tremendous, great
effort," Mets manager Terry Collins said of Wheeler. "He went after them. It was
his night." Wheeler (3-7) outdueled Heaney in the longest outing of the Mets
starters career. "It feels great, I know I can do it every time out," Wheeler
said. "I know I have the stuff. It finally feels good to go out there and do it
and be efficient with my pitches and get ahead of guys." New York, which won at
St. Louis on Wednesday, has consecutive victories for the first time since a
three-game streak from May 31-June 2. The Mets had dropped eight straight on the
road before Wednesday. Wheeler, the No. 6 pick in the 2009 draft, struck out
eight. He allowed three hits and one walk, and 70 of his 111 pitches were
strikes. He pitched to only one batter over the minimum and was helped by three
double plays. "Anytime somebody gets on, whether it be a walk or hit, you just
try to make a pitch and get a double play. I was able to do that," Wheeler said.
The 24-year old right-hander lowered his ERA to 0.96 in four starts against the
Marlins. "He didnt miss over the plate much," Marlins catcher
Jarrod Saltalamacchia said. "He was really good with locating his pitches off
the plate. He threw a lot of fastballs, like we expected, but he didnt leave
anything over the plate. "Youve got to tip your cap to a guy who pitched a great
game." Heaney (0-1) gave up four hits in six innings, allowing only Wrights home
run. The 23-year old lefty, the ninth pick in the 2012 draft, struck out three
and walked one. "He did a nice job, gave us a chance and kept us in the game,"
Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "He gave up one pitch to a really good hitter
for a home run and that was it. He executed his pitches, got his pitch count up
high early, but then settled in. "All in all it was a good start for him." It
was a battle between two young starters that could see a lot of each other in
coming years in the NL East. "Thats what the game is coming to," Collins said.
"The game is changing where those big power arms are coming up in every
organization, and theyre all young." Heaney allowed an infield hit to
Eric Young, Jr. to begin the game, but got Daniel Murphy to bounce into a double
play. Wright then hit his sixth homer of the season off the sculpture in deep
left-centre field. No one else got into scoring position against Heaney. "I had
no expectations, to be honest," Heaney said. "I just wanted to pitch well. I
felt early on I didnt know how it was going to go. It was kind of on the edge
with every guy. From that fourth inning on I got into a rhythm." Bryan Morris
relieved Heaney in the seventh and faced a bases loaded situation, but he got
Wheeler to ground out and end the threat. Wheeler, who made his much-anticipated
debut a year and a day before Heaney, complimented his mound opponent. "I sat on
the bench in between innings and just watched him, knowing that I was there not
too long ago and knowing how he felt," Wheeler said. "He has a good arm, and I
think hes going to do well." Kevin Gregg pitched the ninth in his season debut
with Miami. He earned 61 saves for the Marlins in 2007-08. Reed Johnson singled
in the ninth off Wheeler with two outs, but Rafael Furcal lined out to centre to
end the game. Wheeler threw a 95 mph fastball on his final pitch. "I still had
plenty," Wheeler said. NOTES: Mets OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis was recalled from

. The team was in last place in the English Premier League, its roster filled
with bloated contracts and egos.TORONTO – Third in league scoring, John Tavares
entered the evening with at least a point in all but three of the Islanders 21
games this season. "Four now," Carl Gunnarsson told the Leaf Report proudly
following a 5-2 victory over New York on Tuesday night, the clubs fifth straight
at home. Gunnarsson was among the stable that kept Tavares, who has 25 points
this season, off the scoresheet entirely. The Islanders captain finished with
just two shots and was rarely a threat, bottled up by the top pair of Gunnarsson
and Dion Phaneuf and a recently assembled shutdown line of Jay McClement,
Mason Raymond and Nik Kulemin. Tavares entered the night with eight goals and 16
points in 15 career games against the Leafs and had been responsible for 43 per
cent of his teams offence this season. But he was held pointless for just the
fourth time all season. "We played tight on him, we played hard and we didnt
give him much time in our own end," Gunnarsson said of Tavares, who played
alongside fellow top scorer Kyle Okposo and rookie Brock Nelson. "We couldve
done some stuff better too, but when that line doesnt score we give ourselves a
pretty good chance to win the game." Randy Carlyle has yet to employ a shutdown
line consistently against opposing top lines so far this season – often using
his top unit when healthy – but he did against the Islanders. As McClement
explained it, the assignment isnt known to players until game-time and often
beyond that. Unlike Andy Murray, his longtime coach in St. Louis, who would
present line matchups to the group on a whiteboard in the morning, Carlyle
prefers to keep his close to the vest. "He wont let you know too often,"
McClement said of Carlyle, leading Leaf forwards with over 20 minutes on
Tuesday. "You dont really know until you start the game. And even the first
shift we didnt start against them and then we played every other shift against
them. You never know. Maybe its a good thing. Youre not thinking about it, youre
just ready to play." What the McClement unit did effectively most of the night
against Tavares, who had points in five straight, was keep him on the defensive.
With consistent pressure and a simple chip-and-chase game, the line spent a good
chunk of their shifts against him deep in the offensive zone. They would be
rewarded when Raymond scored the eventual game-winner early in the third, the
27-year-old capping a McClement drive to the crease of Islanders goaltender
Kevin Poulin. "We got to pucks on the forecheck and ended up having a lot of
shifts in their end," McClement said, also beating Tavares on 10 of 19 draws.
"Thats the easiest way to play defence is play offence." Five Points 1. Home ice
dominance While theyve yet to establish a consistent brand of hockey (see below)
the Leafs have nonetheless strung together a strong record through the
quarter-mark of the season (13-7-1). Part of that success emanates from their
effective showing on home ice. The Leafs have now won five straight at home and
seven of their past eight, and are now 8-2-0 on the year at the ACC. Theyve
outscored opponents 35-23 in that span, more effective offensively (3.5 goals
per game) and defensively (2.3 goals against per game) than on the road. "That
was one of the goals we wanted to create is when teams come into this building
theres no more of this two points, kiss your relatives and go home," said
Carlyle. "Its enough of that." With another power-play marker – this one from
Phil Kessel – the Leafs also continued a trend of home dominance on the
power-play; they rank first with a 32.4 per cent success rate. 2. Clarkson
breaks the goose egg Without a goal in the first 10 games of his late-starting
season, David Clarkson finally broke through with his first as a Leaf against
the Islanders. The 29-year-old rifled a shot beyond the glove of Poulin midway
through the final period, benefiting from the effective work of Joffrey Lupul
and Trevor Smith down low in the offensive zone. "The better feeling is coming
in here after a win and turning on that music," said Clarkson, who played nearly
19 minutes, adding five hits. "Thats the best feeling to me ever." 3. Gardiner
on the left When Mark Fraser returned from a left knee injury last week – hes
since re-injured a different part of the knee – Carlyle juggled his defence
pairings, opting to move Jake Gardiner back to his natural left side position
alongside Cody Franson. Gardiner had never played the right before and often
appeared uncertain and inconsistent there alongside Paul Ranger. "I think Ive
felt a lot more comfortable offensively," Gardiner told the Leaf Report prior to
Tuesdays game. "I still have to fine-tune some things, but I feel like I see the
ice a lot better from the left side." The 23-year-old is also pleased to be
reunited with Franson, with whom hes played alongside for a good chunk of his
NHL career. "We even talked about it – we know where each other are on the ice,"
said Gardiner of Franson. "Theres some plays that we do a lot of that seem to
work and we know exactly when theyre going to be there, wwhether its in the
offensive zone, neutral zone or defensive zone.
http://www.dolphinsteamauthenticshop.com/c-49-dolphins-isa-abdul-quddus-jersey.aspx.
Hes a vocal guy too. Its really easy to play with him. Hopefully he feels the
same way." Gardiner led the Leafs with over 22 minutes against the Islanders,
including 19:42 at even-strength. 4. Kessel durability Phil Kessel played his
first game as a Leaf on Nov. 3, 2009; he sat out the first 12 games recovering
from offseason shoulder surgery. The 26-year-old has not missed a game since.
Kessel extended his iron-man streak to 303 consecutive games, breaking a recent
dry spell with a pair of goals against the Islanders. A bout with the flu a day
earlier put his games played streak in jeopardy, but the teams leading scorer
remained in the lineup, paired with James van Riemsdyk and Peter Holland for the
second straight game. Kessel is a ways off the active leaders in consecutive
games played. Jay Bouwmeester is the current iron man with 654 straight games
played, according to TSN Research, trailed closely by Henrik Sedin at 651. Only
three players remain from the Toronto lineup that dressed on the night of
Kessels highly anticipated debut:

with the team 5. Standing at the quarter pole Joffrey Lupul offered the
following assessment of the Leafs performance one quarter of the way into the
season. "Weve battled through a lot of injuries and were still up near the top
of the conference. Thats a positive," said Lupul. "Is there things we can do
better? For sure there is. But Im sure every team in the league with the
exception of maybe St. Louis or San Jose or one of these teams is saying the
same thing. Everyone wants to do some things better. But its early in the season
and youre just finding that identity as a team and you want to eventually be a
team that plays the same way every night and a team that improves throughout the
year. Were not there yet, but were still high in the standings so theres
positives and negatives you could say." Added Randy Carlyle, "Weve tried to
create a template that were more conservative from an offensive standpoint. Were
not making the Hail Mary plays. Were not trying to just be a rush team. Were
trying to do a lot of different things as far as getting away from just one and
out. We want more puck possession time. Theres been a lot said in our statistics
proving out that were having success when we shouldnt be. We look at it as weve
been forced to do some things differently with personnel, suspensions and
injuries. We are just trying to find a way to manufacture points. This isnt a
development league were in, its about winning. The points that we can put up on
the board, doesnt matter who we have in the lineup, it just bodes well for us in
the future." Bonus Point – Extending an opportunity Trevor Smith played his
first NHL game with the Islanders back on Dec. 31, 2008. On Tuesday against the
same New York squad, the 28-year-old had a career-high three points. Playing
alongside Lupul and Clarkson, Smith scored the games opening goal 22 seconds
into the first frame, adding a pair of assists in the third. Plugging a hole at
centre with Tyler Bozak and Dave Bolland both injured, Smith has compiled at
least a point in three games since being recalled from the Marlies last Friday,
totaling three goals and five points in that span. "The guys are making it
really easy for me to come in and play and be confident to make plays with
them," Smith said. "I was fighting the puck a little bit in the first, but they
calmed me down and just told me to relax and do what I do and we went from
there." Nazem Kadri is due to return from a three-game suspension on Thursday,
but it would appear that Smith has earned, at the very least, an extended
opportunity. How long that opportunity lasts is unclear with Bozak likely to
return Saturday following a lengthy stint on injured reserve. Stat-Pack 1 – Goal

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. http://www.shopdolphinsauthentic.com/Youth-Jonas-Gray-Elite-Jersey/ . -- Nothing seems to bother Florida State. Distractions off the field, deficits on the field, nothing has derailed the Seminoles for 26 games and counting. And after yet another comeback, the defending national champions are squarely in the mix for another title. Dalvin Cook ran for two scores, including the go-ahead touchdown with 3:05 remaining and the second-ranked Seminoles (10-0, 7-0 Atlantic Coast Conference, No. 3 CFP) rallied from 16 points down to beat Miami 30-26 on Saturday night, their fifth straight win over their archrival and the fifth straight times theyve won on Hurricane turf. Just the way we do things at Florida State, Seminoles coach Jimbo Fisher said. Amid another batch of twists and turns -- uncertainty over Cooks status early in the week because of a sore hip, then a Friday report in The New York Times about how starting cornerback P.J. Williams was ticketed but not charged after briefly leaving the scene of a car accident last month -- Florida State remained unscathed. Jameis Winston completed 25 of 42 passes for 304 yards for the Seminoles, who clinched the ACCs Atlantic Division title earlier in the day when Clemson lost. They were down 16-0 and 23-7 before outscoring the Hurricanes 23-3 in the final 2 1/2 quarters. We just kept our poise and kept playing, Fisher said. Brad Kaaya threw for 316 yards and two touchdowns for Miami, which got to the Florida State 43 on their final drive but fell short when Jalen Ramsey intercepted a fourth-down pass with 39 seconds left. Duke Johnson rushed for 130 yards and a touchdown for the Hurricanes (6-4, 3-3), who were eliminated from the ACCs Coastal race. Phillip Dorsett and Clive Walford caught scoring passes for Miami. With that, the cardiac Noles saw their chances of a second straight unbeaten run to a national title live on. They love each other and it gets down to that, Fisher said. They play for each other. They dont panic. This is a heck of a Miami football team. Give them credit ... but our kids just execute when they have to. The stadium was packed -- a rarity for Miami -- and filled with star power. Former Miami coach Howard Schnellenberger was on the sideline pregame, as was Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton. They all got what they came to see: another Miami-FSU classic. Down 13 at the half, Florida State got a huge break to get the comeback rolling. Facing a third down at the Miami 11, Winston dropped back and had his throw deflected by the Hurricanes Tyriq McCord, whose hand sent the ball flying high into the night. Karlos Williams caught the carom in stride, waltzed into the end zone and just like that it was a one-possession game, Miamis lead down to 23-17. The Hurricanes rolled up 320 yards in the first half, then got just about nothing going after halftime, with two punts and a fumble on their first three possessions after returning from the locker room. Meanwhile, Florida State chipped away. Aguyao connected from 37 to get the Seminoles within three, and after Michael Badgley tacked a field goal on for Miami, Aguayo answered again with a 53-yarder. Cooks go-ahead run came with 3:05 left, the first and only time FSU would lead all night. Trouble signs were there early for Florida State, which punted twice in the games first three minutes. Then again, early issues are commonplace for the Seminoles, who have faced second-quarter deficits in seven of their last eight games. By now, thats no big deal for Florida State. Kaaya found Dorsett with a perfect 27-yard strike that opened the scoring, Johnson got in from a yard out late in the first and Badgleys field goal on the next Hurricane possession pushed the lead to 16-0. It was Miamis biggest lead over Florida State since 2003. It was 23-7 after Kaaya and Walford connected on a 61-yard catch-and-run with 11:37 left in the second, and Miami was rolling. The Hurricanes roll stopped there. The rest of the night was all Florida State. http://www.shopdolphinsauthentic.com/Youth-Lamar-Miller-Elite-Jersey/ . Kazmir was tagged for three homers and allowed a season-high seven runs in the As 10-1 loss to the New York Mets and Bartolo Colon on Tuesday night. http://www.shopdolphinsauthentic.com/Youth-Jamar-Taylor-Elite-Jersey/ . A steal of two in the ninth sealed the win over Swedish skip Margaretha Sigfridsson, who throws lead stones but calls the shots as skip. Jones has now added Olympic gold to the world championship she won in 2008 as well as four Canadian crowns.Toronto FCs 2014 season ended Saturday night. You may not have noticed as, for many, the season ended weeks ago. Negative headlines took the place of meaningful football as Toronto FCs playoff hopes slipped away. It was almost better the 1-0 loss to New England was overlooked. A game played on a turf field with football lines hardly does justice to the product. Nor does another dubious refereeing decision (or indecision, rather) leading to the game winner. Multiple controversial refereeing mistakes are an underrated, lesser-told storyline leading to an eighth consecutive season without playoff football for the TFC. Dubious red cards and disallowed goals should have been the extent of controversy in Toronto FCs season. Instead, more self-inflicted wounds due to poor communication, half-truths and speculation continue to hurt the image of Toronto FC. From Doneil Henrys transfer status, to mud-slinging at Jermain Defoe via high-placed club sources, it has not read well. On top of that, Michael Bradley is now having foot surgery in New York after Head Coach Greg Vanney claimed the player was fine after the loss to the New York Red Bulls two weeks ago. Mixed messages never end well. Weve experienced eight years of it and it hasnt helped. Its discouraging the lesson has not been learned from the mistakes of previous regimes: club leaks, he-said, he-said confrontations, and failure to simply tell it like it is continues to create an environment of mistrust and external perception of incompetence. This is the perception, it may not be reality. Things are not that bad at the club, but the manner by which they continue to conduct business opens the door for further criticism. The daggers are out. Calm and stability are needed. Good will is not something readily available based upon track record. Again, self-inflicted wounds are to blame. Its entirely frustrating to watch. Instead of piling on as many others continue to do, Id rather give advice; the club must keep quiet - just stop talking, or at the very least, think before they act. And if theyre going to speak, please make it the truth. Transparency is the ultimate olive branch to a skeptical fanbase. Its especially recommended if there isnt anything to hide. The depth of the negative narrative is surprising considering what the spin on the subpar season can be. The new Toronto FC administration should simply stick to the story that they began a complete rebuild of the squad less than a year ago, with the cupboards shockingly bare. They should stress the restructure will take time, something not simply remedied by a couple big money signings. Focus on the fact the team still set franchise records for wins and points through the growing pains and reshaping of the roster. Hit home that ownership is completely invested, showing for the first time in its history a willingness to spend with the power clubs in MLS. Bang home the message that the future is bright with a massive stadium renovation taking place and the continued investment in the Kia Training Ground. Off-field growth and stability has been achieved like never before. Its now about getting the right players to Toronto. Michael Bradley is the foundation, but its up to management to surround him with complimentary players, helping establish a team identity. 2014 was merely a start, 2015 the job continues. Simply admit the club over-sold expectations and came up short and that the blame is shared by all. There. Done. How difficult was that? All points made are true and paint a much better picture, the kind of explanation presented is completely reasonable. Not all will buy it - and thats fine - but thats the narrative to build off. Instead, a path has been chosen to discredit a star player (who is not without blame), while other items continue to confusse and lack clarity. http://www.shopdolphinsauthentic.com/Youth-Dallas-Thomas-Elite-Jersey/. Other than a small, short-term PR win, its hard to believe portraying the most talented player the club has ever had as a mammas boy does anything for Toronto FC in the big picture. It paints more of the same. Whoever leaked the story must have his reasons. It can be argued it was the last thing the team needed. An amicable split between Toronto FC and Defoe would do much more for future recruitment and league-wide goodwill. The focus has to be in the best interests of the team, emphasis on team. It especially holds true when the club defended Defoe to the hills around a tumultuous and speculative period around the closing of the transfer window. As an astute Toronto FC observer over the last eight years, I truly dont believe this team is that far off the mark. Things have been far, far worse. I have seen few better performances than an opening day win over Seattle and a massive away victory at Columbus a few weeks later. The wheels fell off as injuries mounted and adversity was faced. Personality conflicts emerged and the head coach was let go. Theres no way of telling if it was the right decision to dismiss Ryan Nelsen but the front office and coaching staff need be on the same page - thats a must. But the coaching change created instability. Its the type of instability that has reared its ugly head all-too often. Its unintentionally divisive and signals volatility. The team went back to old ways; nine head coaches in eight years. If Toronto FC could do it all over again, they would have most likely made the coaching change when the new front office took over, yet going down that road is nothing but living in the past. The present issues stem from the fact losing breeds drama at Toronto FC. And the clubs response to hardship leaves much to be desired. DC United went worst in 2013 to first in 2014, from 16 points to 59. Dramatic turnarounds can happen in MLS. A stable, consistent environment is essential for this to happen, though. No more pointing fingers, just proper communication. The establishment of positive conditions needed to succeed and continued commitment to superior player recruitment. This is what will lead to success. This leads us to this week: the year-end media interviews, an annual tradition. Toronto FC PR does a fantastic job making the players, coaches and management available for a year-end retrospect and should be applauded for doing so. The lack of team success and controversial storylines/unanswered questions makes for an awkward exercise. Many of the media use the day to fill-in the blanks, probe and pry for talking point of contention. Nuggets of discontent, bad-mouthing, and tone are dissected. The last thing Toronto FC needs is more off-field squabbling and/or controversy giving further fodder for the detractors to feast on. Basically, nothing good can come from the availability. Somber reflection makes for a depressing day, but its showing commitment to the future build is all thats needed. At this point, silence is golden. Enough talk. No more apologies, no more blame. There is nothing more to say. Everyone just needs to keep quiet. Before you speak, just stop. Enough is enough. Instead, just build a winner. Scout. Recruit. Network. Strategize. Find consistency, build an identity and culture of inclusion - and of success - and provide conditions to succeed. Until that time, all the positives of being a part of Toronto FC remain ignored, and thats not fair. The franchise can be something special. There are many who have worked so hard to make Toronto FC what it is, and there is much good to speak of. Its just overshadowed by losing and controversy, and understandably so. It all needs to be better. It starts with communication. It leads to cohesion and it ends with wins, we hope. straight win, 3-2 over the Minnesota Wild on Saturday night. Marleau also scored
as the two longtime Sharks shined one day after signing three-year deals that
will keep them in San Jose through the 2016-17 season. "For me and Patty both to
score, its a great night for us," Thornton said. Antti Niemi made 20 saves and
Joe Pavelski and Matt Irwin had two assists apiece as the Sharks overcame a 2-0
deficit to get their third six-game winning streak of the season. "Theyre our
guys, and we need them when were down," Irwin said. "Jumbo got us to within one
and Patty tied it up and obviously Jumbo won it in overtime. Theyre our guys.
Its just kind of ironic what happened." Matt Cooke and Keith Ballard scored for
the Wild, who built an early lead on the opener of a four-game road trip but
still lost for the ninth time in their past 10 trips to San Jose. Darcy Kuemper
made 29 saves as Minnesota lost for just the fourth time in 12 games this month.
"We got a point against a good team in a tough building to play," Ballard said.
"For the most part we played a fairly solid game. We werent the best at times.
But we hung in there and even after they got those two quick goals, I thought we
responded pretty well. We just couldnt find the time to get the third one
tonight." Thornton and Pavelski combined on the game-winning play by causing a
turnover at the blue line. Pavelski then fed Thornton, who beat Kuemper with a
wrist shot from the top of the circle to end it with his ninth career overtime
goal and first since Nov. 26, 2008, against Chicago. Pavelski assisted on both
of Thorntons goals in a bit of a role reversal after Thornton helped set up many
of his 19 goals in the previous 21 games. "Ive been telling Pav, Youve been
scoring too much. Start passing the puck. And he finally listened," Thornton
said. "I dont too often, but Pav just made two good plays and luckily I put them
in." The Wild struck first on a nifty play by Cooke midway through the first
period. Cooke deflected Thorntons cross-ice pass to Brad Stuart in the neutral
zone. Cooke then beat Stuart to the loose puck and skated in on Niemi before
beating him with a forehand for his eighth goal. They added onto the lead early
in the second when Mikael Granlund fed Ballard for a one-timer that beat Niemi.
It was Ballards first goal since Oct. 6, 2011, for Vancouver against Pittsburgh,
ending a drought of 114 games without a goal. But that was all the Wild would
get as they managed just 12 shots in the final 39-plus minutes. They spent much
of the game on the defensive as they won just 18 of 59 faceoffs. "We lost the
extra point because of the face-off circle tonight," coach Mike Yeo said. "We
spent the entire night chasing and its inevitable that they will put you on your
heels and give them some momentum. We never started with the puck. That was the
big story." Minnesota dominated the opening half of the second period, limiting
San Jose to one shot in the first 11-plus minutes before Thornton and Marleau
delivered a day after getting their new contracts. Thornton struck first when
Pavelski fed him for a one-timer that he knocked past Kuemper on a knuckler.
Just 49 seconds later, Marleau scored his 22nd of the season when Tommy Wingels
fanned on the original shot but still managed to get the puck to Marleau, who
deflected it past Kuemper to tie the game. NOTES: Thornton has 40 career
multigoal games. ... Minnesota F Jason Pominville got his 500th career point
with an assist on Ballards goal. ... San Jose juggled its top two lines the
second half of the game with Matt Nieto playing with Thornton and Pavelski and
Brent Burns moving to a wing with Marleau and Wingels. PHILADELPHIA --
Allen Iverson cupped his hand to his left ear and asked to hear his favourite
tune one more time. With that command, 20,000 roaring Philadelphia 76ers fans
gave AI the standing ovation he earned by stamping himself as one of the
franchises all-time greats. Iverson, emotional as he thanked former teammates
and friends, had his No. 3 retired at halftime of Saturdays game against
Washington. High above the Wells Fargo Center court, Iversons banner slipped
between Maurice Cheeks No. 10 and Charles Barkleys No. 34. "They all wanted me
to talk about how much yall loved me," Iverson said, "but trust me, the feeling
was mutual." Iverson officially retired in October after last playing in 2010.
He won four scoring titles for the Sixers and was the 2001 MVP when he led them
to the NBA Finals. He never won a championship, the lone omission in a career
that is destined for the Hall of Fame. The Sixers may as well have turned the
arena into an AI museum. Four banners greeted fans at the main concourse
entrance, and photos of him were plastered all around the arena. The merchandise
stands sold Iverson jerseys for $130, and lower level tickets were going for as
much for $1,280 on Stubhub about an hour before the 7:30 p.m. tipoff. The fans
loved him, and he blew them kisses after the No. 3 was raised to show how much
he loved them back. "I am Philly," Iverson said. "Its always going to be that
way." Iversons return injected a rare dose of excitement into a franchise
playing some of the worst basketball in the league. The Sixers, in full-blown
rebuilding mode, had lost 12 straight entering Saturdays game. The losing didnt
matter much Saturday, just the memories. The Sixers wore special "Iverson
Forever" patches on their jerseys and Iversons 3 on their pregame warmup shirts.
"Its a great example of how this city responds to somebody that they clearly
think the world of and brought such exciting times to the city of Philadelphia,"
Sixers coach Brett Brown said. The Sixers retirement gift was a boat named in
honour of his nickname, "The Answer." "It feels good," Iverson said after the
ceremony, "but some part of my heart hurts because I know its over." Iverson
joined Cheeks, Barkley, Wilt Chamberlain and Julius Erving among the eight
retired numbers in franchise history. Erving attended thhe ceremony.dddddddddddd
Moses Malone, Dikembe Mutombo, Theo Ratliff, Gary Payton and former team
president Pat Croce also were at the celebration. Former coach Larry Brown, who
both clashed with and loved Iverson over their tenure, sent a videotaped
message. "I just want to tell you, and I say this fondly: God put me there to
coach you," Brown said. Iverson said Brown was the player who moulded him into
one of the NBAs best. "I always had raw talent," he said. "I needed Larry Brown
to polish it up." Iverson was the No. 1 overall pick in the 1996 draft and spent
his first 10 seasons in Philadelphia. He also played for Denver, Detroit, and
Memphis before returning to Philadelphia for a 25-game stint in 2009-10.
Iverson, who mashed hip-hop culture and hoops like no player before him, was
perhaps at his peak in his fifth NBA season. The 165-pound guard averaged 31.1
points, was the MVP of the All-Star game and propped an entire franchise on his
6-foot frame all the way to the finals. Led by Brown, the Sixers needed Game 7
wins in consecutive series for the right to play the Lakers. Shaquille ONeal,
Kobe Bryant and the Lakers swept their way through the post-season before Game 1
in Los Angeles. Iverson had 48 points in 52 minutes of an overtime victory. The
Sixers didnt have enough to go the distance and the Lakers won the next four
games. Hes 21st on the NBAs career scoring list with 24,368 points over 914
career games. Iverson, drafted out of Georgetown, scored 30-plus points 345
times and was an 11-time All-Star. His No. 3 jersey was a bestseller around the
globe, the headband wrapped snugly around his cornrows, and the tattoos were as
much a part of his image as the way he ricochets around the court. Play every
game like it was his last was more than a catchphrase, it was a lifestyle. "Who
could not be an Allen Iverson fan?" said Thaddeus Young, the lone current Sixers
player who played with Iverson. "It got no bigger than him in Philadelphia." NBA
Commissioner Adam Silver was at the game for AIs night. "Allen was a special
player," Silver said before the game. "The great things he did for the league
far outweigh the occasional headache. I always thought even at the time of
Allen Iversons prominence in the league, he was representative of his
generation."

REGINA -- The players wont be the only ones in a huddle at Sundays Grey Cup.
Justin Verlander Jersey . Thousands of fans
at Mosaic Stadium will be cozying up to each other in an effort to stay warm in
chilly temperatures and block the Prairie wind that locals say can knock your
socks off. "Saskatchewans notorious for its wind," says Trevor Norgan, assistant
manager of Fresh Air Experience, an outdoor clothing and equipment store in
Regina. "Theres not a lot of shelter because we dont have a lot of trees and
things, so it just really continues across the entire province. So you get these
cold fronts that come in and the key thing that I have found is if a person can
stay comfortable, and basically block the wind but have a little bit of
insulation, thats the key ingredient." When the Saskatchewan Roughriders hosted
the CFL West Division semifinal against the B.C. Lions on Nov. 10, Environment
Canada said the temperature at halftime was -15 C. It was a biting -21 C with
the windchill. The weather this week in Regina has been bitterly cold with
Wednesdays high -17 C. A bit of relief may be coming with temperatures expected
to rise to just below zero by gameday, though the low for Sunday is -14. Norgan
recommends layers to stay warm. He starts with a lightweight base layer shirt in
a merino wool because it can wick away moisture and doesnt smell the way a
synthetic material can, and tops that with a fleece sweater. Those can be
followed by down sweaters and a windproof exterior shell "to block that great
Saskatchewan wind we have here" or a down-filled parka. The bottom is just as
important, says Norgan. For the legs, longjohns are a must. Ski or snow pants
that block wind are a plus too. Norgan says children and women may need to dress
a little bit warmer because they tend to feel the cold more then men, but "it
just depends how rambunctious and active you are during the game." "The
important thing is basically to stay comfortable because you want to enjoy the
experience at the game. Its one of those things where you dont want to feel that
youre cold or you dont want to feel that you wished you had something else,"
says Norgan. Dave Ash, a tour organizer and super fan who is best known for
wearing a flashing green light mounted on a Riders helmet, swears by goose
down-filled jackets. Of course, Ash tops all of that with a Saskatchewan
Roughriders jersey big enough to fit over the parka. "As part of any Grey Cup
festivities, the most important thing is a little survival kit," says Ash.
"Inside youll have a warming blanket, but the most important things are these
two items: handwarmers and toe warmers -- a must for Grey Cup. Youre going to be
outside in the cold for three hours. The only way to fight the cold is with
heat, remember that." Ash says another must is a seat cushion to separate your
bum from the cold benches at Mosaic Stadium. The Regina tour organizer, who has
been to 38 consecutive Grey Cups and plans to be there on Sunday, says the
coldest was probably the first Grey Cup he attended in Calgary in 1975. "It was
really cold and there was a streaker at that game," Ash says with a laugh. "It
was really cold." Norgan remembers going to the Grey Cup as a kid in 1995 and
its the cold that stands out for him too. "It was shocking, like I couldnt
describe it any more than shocking," recalls Norgan. "I can remember the wind
was so vicious that if somebody moved four or five seats down, you could feel
the wind coming up, so it was actually a community effort to stay warm. "You see
the athletes huddling on the side. You can everybody else in the stands huddling
as well."

MIAMI -- In their fitful, laborious search for a general manager, the Miami
Dolphins finally found someone to say yes: Dennis Hickey.
Cody Zeller Jersey . The longtime Tampa Bay
Buccaneers executive accepted the job Sunday, ending a search that lasted nearly
three weeks. Hickeys hiring came after the Dolphins were rejected by several
candidates. New England Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio and
Tennessee Titans vice-president of player personnel Lake Dawson turned down job
offers only hours before Miami reached out to Hickey, while Cleveland Browns
assistant general manager Ray Farmer withdrew from consideration Thursday.
Several others declined invitations to interview as a replacement for Jeff
Ireland, whose six-year stint as general manager ended Jan. 7 when he and owner
Stephen Ross agreed to part ways. Hickey has been with the Buccaneers for 18
seasons, including the past three as director of player personnel. He was their
director of college scouting for six years. He was not interviewed for Tampa
Bays GM job when it became open after this season. The Bucs won four division
titles and one Super Bowl championship during his time with them, but went 28-52
over the past five years and had spotty draft results during that span. Hickey
was among eight candidates interviewed by Miami, with Ross aide Matt Higgins and
executive vice-president of football administration Dawn Aponte helping the
owner with the screening process. The other finalist was Dolphins assistant
general manager Brian Gaine, who worked under Ireland. Some candidates and
potential candidates expressed concern about the Dolphins power structure,
including the role of Aponte, who clashed with Ireland. In a news release to
announce the hiring, the Dolphins said Hickey will oversee all aspects of
football operations and report directly to Ross. Coach Joe Philbin will continue
to report directly to Ross as well, while Apontes place in the chain of command
wasnt spelled out. Ross loyalty to Philbin, who is 15-17 in two seasons with
Miami, may have been a stumbling block for some candidates. In a statement, Ross
cited Hickeys willingness to work with Philbin as a factor in the hiring. "When
we started the search, I outlined qualities that I was looking for in this
position," Ross said. "These included a collaborative team-first person who can
work with Joe, demonstrated player evaluation expertise, and someone who is
open-minded and creative. Dennis fit all of these criteria." The Titans Dawson
released a statement saying he had declined Miamis job offer. "I felt Stephen is
a great owner, passionate and wants to win, but the details of the offer didnt
align with my vision," Dawson said. "I turned it down because it wasnt an ideal
fit for my family and me." So Ross turned to Hickey, who was interviewed for the
first time 10 days into the search. The protracted process reinforced Ross
reputation for having difficulty closing deals with the Dolphins. In the past,
the New York real estate billionaire has unsuccessfully courted Peyton Manning,
Jim Harbaugh and Jeff Fisher. Hickeys task will be to upgrade the roster after
Miami collapsed late in the season to blow a playoff berth and finish 8-8. The
Dolphins havent been above .500 since 2008, the longest such stretch in
franchise history. The tumultuous 2013 season included a locker-room bullying
scandal that drew national scrutiny, and a report on the NFL investigation into
the case will be released after the Super Bowl. "The Dolphins certainly have
talented players," Hickey said in a statement, "and I am eager to hit the ground
running with our personnel and coaching staffs. We will all work together to
construct a team that will make our organization and fans proud." Hickey will be
introduced at a news conference Tuesday. AP Sports Writer Teresa M. Walker in
Nashville, Tenn. contributed to this report.

minutes to put St. Johns ahead 2-0 heading into the first intermission. Jaffray
made it 3-0 at 2:17 of the second. Acolatse put Worcester on the board less than
a minute later. Riley and Makinnon, however, responded with goals 50 seconds
apart to make it 5-1 IceCaps after 40 minutes of play. St. Johns went 0 for 4 on
the power play while Worcester went 1 for 6.

beat AC Milan 3-1 and reinforce its bid for a Champions League place after
Fiorentinas earlier victory over Atalanta in Serie A on Saturday. Third-place
Napoli remained three points ahead of Fiorentina, which won 2-0. "We played with
high intensity and skill, at a very high level," Napoli coach Rafa Benitez said.
"Higuain is making the difference but his teammates helped him a lot. "It
happens that you make mistakes in some matches but today we saw a team that is
growing." Adel Taarabt took less than eight minutes of his Serie A debut to fire
Milan in front, racing half the length of the pitch before curling a wonderful
finish into the bottom right corner. Gokhan Inler levelled three minutes later
with a deflected effort into the top right corner. Higuain had an effort ruled
marginally offside and Cristian Maggio hit the post as Napoli threatened to take
the lead on several occasions. The home side finally made the most of its
opportunities 11 minutes after halftime when Higuain, who had been threatening
all night, headed home a delightful cross from Inler. The Argentine doubled his
tally eight minutes from time to take his season tally to 16 in all
competitions. Shortly beforehand, Mario Balotelli broke down in tears on the
bench after being substituted off following a below-par performance from the
Italy striker. "Everyone expresses emotions in that way," Milan coach Clarencee
Seedorf said.

player. It was a particular moment for him. Its happened to me before, too." It
was Seedorfs first league defeat of his fledgling managerial career. Also,
Udinese beat Chievo Verona 3-0 in a relegation battle. Josip Ilicic broke the
deadlock in Florence in the 16th minute when he curled a superb free kick into
the near top right corner from 25 metres. Atalantas hopes of getting anything
from the match all but evaporated when it was reduced to 10 men nine minutes
from time following Luca Cigarinis second booking. Substitute Rafal Wolski
sealed the match in the 86th, racing almost half the length of the pitch and
holding off defenders before firing across into the bottom left corner for his
first Serie A goal. Udinese had lost four of its past five Serie A matches,
while Chievo was without a win in its past seven, scoring only four goals during
that period. Chievo almost took the lead on the half hour when Cyril Thereaus
back-heeled effort crashed off the base of the upright. Udinese went in front in
the 56th when Antonio Di Natale brought down Dusan Bastas pass and volleyed
across into the bottom left corner for his third goal in as many matches.
Substitute Bruno Fernandes tapped home Roberto Pereyras cross in the 74th and
Emmanuel Badu added a third shortly before fulltime. Udinese moved provisionally
nine points clear of the relegation zone and eight points ahead of Chievo.

Mens/Womens .Va. -- Its NCAA chances all but gone, West Virginia
showed it still has some fight left in a lacklustre season. West Virginia built
a 25-point lead and had to withstand 41 points by freshman Andrew Wiggins and a
furious comeback by No. 8 Kansas to upset the Jayhawks 92-86 in their Big 12
regular-season finale Saturday. "We just had to stay composed, not get too down,
dont say, dang, theyre going to come back," said Eron Harris, who led West
Virginia with 28 points. "Youve got to always have confidence in your team that
youre going to win." The Mountaineers (17-14, 9-9 Big 12) could have finished
with a thud like they had in losing four of their five previous games that
reduced them to playing for a spot in the NIT. The young Mountaineers, who have
no seniors, watched Kansas tear into the deficit behind Wiggins, who set a
season high for scoring and a freshman record for the Jayhawks before fouling
out in the final seconds. He also eight rebounds, four blocks and five steals,
to go along with 12-of-18 shooting from the field. Ben McLemore has the Kansas
single-game freshman scoring record with 36 last season. West Virginia made some
clutch free throws in the final minute to thwart the comeback and keep coach Bob
Huggins sanity intact. "When we get a little more experience, well handle those
things a little better," said Huggins, who earned $25,000 for beating Kansas in
the regular season, one of the bonus clauses in a 2012 contract extension. Juwan
Staten added 24 points and Devin Williams, WVUs star freshman, had a season-high
22 points along with 13 rebounds. It marked the first time this season that
Kansas had allowed three opposing players to score 20 points. "I thought Staten
controlled the game," Kansas coach Bill Self said. "Harris was terrific and
Williams was by far the best big in the game. "They were terrific and then we
didnt guard at all. Weve gone through stretches this year where we havent
guarded well, but thats probably as poor as weve been. But give them credit,
they were a lot better than us offensively than we were defensively." West
Virginia shot 53 per cent from the floor and outrebounded Kansas 37-31. Perry
Ellis added 14 points for Kansas (23-8, 14-4), which clinched its 10th straight
regular-season title a week ago and had little riding on this game. The Jayhawks
will have a first-round bye in the conference tournament that begins Wednesday
in Kansas City, Mo. Kansas was without 7-foot freshman Joel Embiid, who sat out
his second straight game to rest a lower back strain. Tarik Black, starting in
Embiids place, went to the bench with his second foul four minutes into the
game. The Mountaineers led nearly the entire game but fell apart down the
stretch. Still, West Virginia managed to beat a ranked team for the third time
in seven tries over the past month. Kansas went more than seven minutes without
a field goal spanning the halves and found itself with its biggest deficit of
the season, 64-39, with 16:43 left in the game after a Harris 3-pointer. But the
Mountaineers have had trouble holding double-digit leads this season, and Kansas
-- especially Wiggins -- was hardly done. West Virginia struggled against Kansas
full-court press, and Wiggins followed Landen Lucas three-point play with four
free throws and a 3-pointer over a 47-second span to pull Kansas within 78-68
with 6:13 remaining. Wiggins scored 14 straight points at one point for the
Jayhawks. Frank Masons 3-pointer trimmed the deficit to 85-80 with 1:24 left.
But West Virginia made 7 of 8 free throws in the final minute to hang on.
Backups Lucas and Jamari Traylor couldnt keep up with Williams, who scored 10
straight points for the Mountaineers at one point. He had 18 in the first half
to give the Mountaineers a 50-38 halftime lead -- the most points given up by
the Jayhawks in the first half this season. "I thought Devin played really
well," Huggins said. "(He) scored it through contact and made open shots, which
he does in practice. And then he rebounds the ball for us. Hes the one guy who
can really go rebound it in a crowd." West Virginia had its second sellout of
the season, thanks to hundreds of Kansas fans who made the 900-mile trek east
and those especially coming to see Wiggins, who played his high school ball on
the other side of the state at Huntington Prep. "Ive never seen him play like
that," Huggins said. "When he makes shots hes really difficult to defend."
