TAMPA, Fla.
Sean Taylor Redskins Jersey . -- Having
completed their regular-season series, the Tampa Bay Lightning and Montreal
Canadiens soon could find themselves battling in the post-season. Tyler Johnson
scored the go-ahead goal on a short-handed breakaway late in the third period
and the Lightning clinched a playoff berth with a 3-1 victory over the Canadiens
on Tuesday night. "Just being in the right spot and getting lucky sometimes,"
Johnson said. The win and losses by New Jersey and Washington gave Tampa Bay its
first post-season berth since 2011 and only its second in seven years. Montreal
ended a five-game winning streak, but also qualified for the post-season by
virtue of the losses by New Jersey and Washington. Canadiens goalie Carey Price
took some consolation in advancing to the post-season. "Were disappointed with
our game today, but big picture, weve got to be happy with that," he said. The
win moved Tampa Bay, with a game in hand, into a second-place tie with Montreal
in the Atlantic Division. The second- and third-place teams in each division
will meet in the first round of the playoffs. "Its just one game, but its really
the 76 games all bottled into one," Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper said. "What you
are really striving for is to win the Stanley Cup, but you cannot win the Cup if
you dont get into the playoffs." With teammate Nate Thompson serving a minor
penalty for boarding, Johnson picked up a loose puck near the Montreal blue
line, skated in on Price and backhanded a shot inside the left post with 7:19
remaining in the game. Canadiens right wing Brendan Gallagher was on one knee in
the low slot when he redirected a rebound past goalie Ben Bishop to open the
scoring 10:18 into the first period. Ryan Callahan made it 1-1 on a power play
9:19 into the second, skating through the left circle toward Price and lifting a
shot high into the net. Tampa Bay was on a power play when Alex Killorn closed
out the scoring with an empty-netter with 45 seconds left in the third period.
Bishop finished with 25 saves, while Price stopped 30 shots. Tampa Bay winger
Teddy Purcell slammed a shot past Price with 11.7 seconds left in the second
period, but the officials ruled forward J.T. Brown made contact with the
goaltender and disallowed the goal. The call drew an angry response from Tampa
Bay fans after a replay appeared on the video screen. The crowd also became
irate when Montreals Douglas Murray drew a match penalty for an illegal check to
the head of fellow defenceman Michael Kostka, setting up a 5-on-3 advantage for
the Lightning with 2:13 left in the game. "If the crowds reaction was anything
after they saw it, then it seems that it was illegal," Cooper said. "Those are
the hits you want to take out of the game. Im sure Murray wasnt looking to hit
him in the head." Lightning forward Ondrej Palat, who earlier in the day was
named the top NHL rookie for the second time in three months, assisted on the
goals by Callahan and Killorn. NOTES: Tampa Bay C Valtteri Filppula, who came in
with the longest points streak in the league at 12 games, came up empty. .
Montreal C Tomas Plekanec returned after missing one game for personal reasons.
. The home team won for the first time in the four-game season series. Lightning
captain Steven Stamkos was sidelined with a broken leg for the first three
games, each of which went to overtime tied at 1. . Price came in victorious in
nine of his 10 previous starts. Bishop improved to 8-1-1 in his last 10.

Graham stopped 67 shots as the Belleville Bulls edged the visiting Guelph Storm
6-5 on Saturday in Ontario Hockey League action.
Redskins
Jersey . On one of the memorable European nights at Old Trafford,
Van Persie scored three times in a 27-minute span either side of halftime to
overturn a 2-0 deficit from the first leg. A slew of brilliant saves by David de
Gea were also key to a famous win for the English champions -- and a vital one
for their manager, David Moyes.Philadelphia Flyers 2 Winnipeg Jets 1 – The loss
snapped the Jets road winning streak at two after wins against New Jersey and
the Islanders to start the six-game trip. The Jets record now sits at 12-12-4,
while their road record drops to 5-6-1. Ten of the 12 road games have been
one-goal games and overall, the Jets have now had 17 games decided by one
goal. It was an 11:30am et start in Philadelphia and the home team had far more
jump in the early going than the visitors. Scott Hartnell opened the scoring 48
seconds into the game as the Jets had trouble getting out of their own end. It
was the first time in four games the Jets did not open the scoring. Final shots
in the first were 13-2 in favour of the Flyers, and if not for a number of great
saves by Ondrej Pavelec, this one would have been over early. His best stop came
off Sean Couturier on a shorthanded breakaway. The Jets also ran into penalty
trouble at the end of the period and the Flyers started the second with a 5-on-3
advantage for almost a minute and a half. It was great penalty killing by the
Jets, in particular Bryan Little, James Wright, Mark Stuart and Jacob Trouba.
After the kill, the Jets gained some momentum and forced the Flyers into a
penalty. But another shorthanded breakaway and this time a goal for Couturier
made it a 2-0 game. It was the fifth shorthanded marker the Jets have given up,
most in the NHL. The Jets did outshoot the Flyers in the second 12-10 and had a
number of good chances but could not beat Steve Mason, who was terrific. The
Jets were the better team in the third but it was not until 12:53 when Michael
Frolik scored to make it a 2-1 game. Mark Scheifele and Stuart drew assists, aas
Scheifele now has points in four straight games.
Authentic Doug Williams Jersey. The Jets did
have two power plays in the third but struggled against the aggressive penalty
killing of the Flyers, going 0-6 on the day. Jets did go 4-4 on the PK. Final
shots were 34-26. Evander Kane left the game early in the second, the result of
a hit from Brayden Coburn late in the first. Kane tried it in the second but
left and is listed as day-to-day with a lower body injury. Pavelec has now given
up only seven goals in his last four road games and has dropped his
goals-against-average below his career season-low of 2.73. Stuart and Dustin
Byfuglien each had five hits, Little led the way in shots on goal with five with
most of those shots being very good scoring chances, while Wright was the best
face-off man winning six of nine. Byfuglien ended the night with 27:24 and had a
few power play shifts as a forward. It was Blake Wheelers 400th NHL game, but
despite a couple of chances has seen his goalless stretch hit 14 games. For the
second straight game, Olli Jokinen made two trips to the penalty box and has now
surpassed the 1,000 mark for penalty minutes in his career. Head coach Claude
Noel felt there were too many players that started slowly but "saying it was
because of the 11:30 start would be an excuse." He was disappointed with the
power play. "We cant get anything out of it and havent been able to through the
year. Finding solutions to that issue and that problem is certainly challenging
for us." The Jets will practice in New York the next two days in preparation for
Mondays game with the Rangers (TSN Jets and TSN 1290). Saturday is an outdoor
practice in Central Park.
