BATON ROUGE, La. Ronaldo Jersey . -- Whether Jeremy Hill deserves a prominent role in LSUs offence this early in the season is a matter for debate. His off-season arrest aside, there is no denying what a game-changer the explosive, 6-foot-2, 235-pound running back can be for the surging sixth-ranked Tigers, who have quickly re-established their credentials as contenders in the Southeastern Conference. Hill rushed for a career-high 184 yards and tied a career high with three touchdowns, helping LSU defeat previously unbeaten Auburn, 35-21 on Saturday night. Running with a combination of power, agility and speed, Hill scored touchdowns of 49, 10 and 6 yards. He set up yet another score with a 54-yard scamper in which he was shoved out of bounds at the 1. Hill was quick to deflect some of the credit to LSUs young offensive line for opening "gaping holes." "It was just up to me to make a couple of guys miss," Hill added. Even Hills defensive teammates talked about being "pumped up" on the sideline as they watched Hill tear off big runs. "For him to be that big and run that fast, its ridiculous," LSU cornerback Jalen Mills said. Tre Mason rushed for 132 yards and had two short touchdown runs in the third quarter for Auburn (3-1, 1-1 SEC), the second cutting LSUs lead to 28-14. Zach Mettenberger responded with his only touchdown pass of the night -- a 32-yarder to Jarvis Landry -- early in the fourth quarter as LSU (4-0, 1-0) dimmed Auburns hopes for a comeback. Mettenberger was 14 of 22 for a season-low 229 yards. He also threw his first interception of the season, but it wasnt that costly as LSUs 228 yards rushing helped it stay in control for most of the game. Auburns Nick Marshall was 17-of-33 passing for 224 yards and was intercepted twice. He also rushed for 46 yards. Although LSU raced to a three-touchdown lead, Auburn refused to fold. Auburn pulled within two scores on Cameron Artis-Paynes 12-yard touchdown run with 6:33 left, then nearly pulled off a successful onside kick. Auburn recovered, but on replay review was deemed to have touched the ball before it went the requisite 10 yards. "Our kids didnt quit and theyre not going to quit," first-year Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said. "Im very proud of our guys and with that attitude theyll have a chance to improve." Auburn already appears substantially better than last season, when it won three games all year and went winless in the SEC. LSU coach Les Miles applauded his teams fast start and its timely answers to Auburns second-half surges, but Miles also said he would have liked the game to have "a nice, orderly finish," adding, "That was not what I consider orderly." With rain steady throughout the day and well into the first half, ball security was a challenge early and hurt Auburn most. Nick Marshalls fumbled handoff on fourth-and-1 on the LSU 41 led to Hills long TD run three plays later for the games opening score. Punter Steven Clarks mishandled snap on Auburns second possession of the game set up Hills 10-yard score to give LSU a 14-0 lead before six minutes had elapsed. Already, Auburn was facing a larger deficit than at any point in its first three games. "We kind of beat ourselves in the beginning," Mason said. "Mistakes after mistakes can get frustrating and that happened. "We also have to figure out how to play in weather like this." LSU was threatening to take a three-score lead when running back Terrence Magee fumbled on the Auburn 12, but Hills slashing 54-yard run set up fullback J.C. Copelands forceful touchdown carry to make it 21-0. Auburn did not score until early in the third quarter. Masons 2-yard TD run capped a 50-yard drive that began with Auburn safety Jermaine Whiteheads interception. LSU responded immediately with a 75-yard drive that ended with Hills third TD. During much of the off-season, it wasnt clear if Hill would be able to play at all. His arrest for landing a punch outside a bar in late April violated his probation from an earlier misdemeanour plea to carnal knowledge of a juvenile. A judge placed further restrictions on Hills probation, but agreed to let him remain out of jail. Miles, whod suspended Hill after his arrest, reinstated him when fall practice began and benched him only for LSUs season-opening victory over TCU. A week later, Hill scored on his first carry against UAB. He scored twice last week against Kent State, including a 58-yarder. He was even more dominant this weekend. ---- NOTES: Auburn WR Jaylon Denson was carted off with what appeared to be a serious knee injury in the first quarter. ... MANCHESTER, England -- Manchester City ended Liverpools short stay at the top of the English Premier League and moved ahead of its title rival after Alvaro Negredo secured a 2-1 victory in their Boxing Day encounter. Englands most potent attacking team quickly recovered after Phillippe Coutinho put Liverpool ahead in the 24th minute. Vincent Kompany headed City level seven minutes later and Negredos high shot was fumbled into the net by Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet on the stroke of halftime. "Thats the hardest game so far. Liverpool are a good team so its great for us," Kompany said. "Its a weird (title race) because all the teams started a little slowly." City ended the day as it started: A point behind the leaders. But Arsenal is back atop the standings, with City moving up a place to second and Liverpool dropping to fourth behind Chelsea. "I thought we were absolutely outstanding," Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said. "(The players) had no help whatsoever from the officials. They were horrendous." Aggrieved that Raheem Sterling had a goal ruled out for offside and Luis Suarez was denied a late penalty, Rodgers questioned why a referee from the Manchester area -- Lee Mason of Bolton -- was given a match involving a Manchester team. Rodgers could face an English Football Association charge for calling into question the referees integrity and implying potential bias. "We never got any decision," Rodgers said. Despite the setback, Liverpool was only three points behind leader Arsenal going into Sundays match at Chelsea. City, though, remain the favourite to repeat its 2012 title triumph after its ninth straight home win to start the season. Manuel Pellegrinis side has beaten every team in the top eight apart from Chelsea, and has netted a league leading 53 goals in 18 games. Despite going up against the high-scoring Suarez, City was again the superior attacking unit and created all the danger at the start. Jesus Navas headed against the post after five minutes, Kompany missed the target with a header from Samir Nasris corner, and Yaya Toures shot was deflected wide. It wasnt long, though, before City goalkeeper Joe Hart was calledd into action in his second league match after being dropped for two months. Danilo Jersey. Hart denied Suarez an 11th goal of the month when he blocked his free kick. But, after Raheem Sterlings goal was harshly ruled out for being offside while meeting Suarezs pass, Hart was beaten. Suarez flicked the ball through for Sterling to round Hart, whose goal was open for Coutinho to dispatch the loose ball into the net from a tight angle. The lead lasted only seven minutes. Kompany outjumped Martin Skrtel to meet David Silvas corner and his header first went past the diving Mignolet and then Joe Allen was powerless to stop on the goal-line. In a fast-paced game, City was at times exposed by the speed of Liverpools break. In the 40th, Suarez released Coutinho, who was denied this time by Hart. Harts counterpart, though, wasnt as assured between the posts. City broke through the middle, with Nasri and Navas leading the charge before feeding Negredo. The shot from Negredo didnt seem menacing but Mignolet pushed it looping over him into the net. "Im disappointed we shipped a goal from a corner and for the second goal, we have to manage the game better coming up to halftime," Rodgers said. "Thats an area we will look at, for sure." Liverpool, so devastating in December -- with 18 goals in four games -- couldnt produce an equalizer. Jordan Henderson struck over at the start of the second half from Suarezs layoff. Mignolet, though, wasnt beaten again, getting two hands on the ball this time when Negredo tried to chip him, and easily collecting a header from the forward. At the other end, Hart made a case for retaining his place in the City goal after error-strewn performances led to him being dropped in October for league matches. The England goalkeeper denied Glen Johnson before being alert to keep out Hendersons backheeled shot. Liverpools best chance of the half to equalize was squandered when Sterling met Suarezs cross but blazed over with the goal seemingly at his mercy. Suarez was denied a penalty late on when Joleon Lescott tugged on his shirt. "Im disappointed to lose," Rodgers said, "but the over-riding feeling is pride in my players." CLEVELAND -- Jeff Teague never saw his winning shot bounce five times off the rim and fall through the basket Thursday night. Moncler Bimba Outlet . Fortunately, his teammates let him know the result. Teague scored a career-high 34 points, including a 20-foot jumper at the buzzer in the second overtime, to give the Atlanta Hawks a 127-125 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Teague was flat on his back after shooting over Tristan Thompson and had no idea the ball went in until he was mobbed by his teammates. Only when Kyle Korver began pounding Teagues chest did reality hit. "I couldnt even see it, but Kyle picked me up and told me what happened," Teague said. "Im really happy it went in." The Hawks would never have been in a position to win the game if not for Teagues 3-pointer with 4.9 seconds left that tied the game at 108-all in the first overtime. "It was nice for this amazing game to finally be over," Atlanta coach Mike Budenholzer said. "Obviously, Jeff Teague made a lot of plays throughout the game and in the overtimes. Im proud of him." Kyrie Irving led Cleveland with 40 points, including 12 in the second OT but the Cavaliers have lost three straight and five of six. "He made a tough play," Irving said. "Its definitely a heartbreaker." Irving was held scoreless for the only time in his career when the teams played in Atlanta on Dec. 6. He bounced back from that game by hitting 17 of 33 from the field with nine assists in 45 minutes. Hawks centre Al Horford, who scored two baskets late in regulation to tie the game, bruised his right shoulder in the first OT and didnt return. Budenholzer said Horford would be further examined Friday. The game featured 12 lead changes and was tied 17 times. The Hawks were coming off a 121-119 overtime loss in Miami on Monday. The defeat, in which Atlanta couldnt hold a seven-point lead with 90 seconds left in regulation, broke a three-game winning streak. Korver scored 20 points, including four 3-pointers. He has made at least one 3-pointer in an NBA record 98 consecutive games. "A lot of guys made some plays," he said. "I think were growing as a team, so thats a positive step." Cavaliers guard Dion Waiters returned after missing three games because of tendinitis in his right wrist. He scored 20 points in 41 minutes, but it was another difficult loss for Cleveland. Portlands Damian Lillard hit a 3-pointer with 0.4 seconds left to defeat the Cavaliers on Dec. 17. "Its tough, man," Waiters said. "We have to close it out -- especially at home. We have to do a better job. No excuses." Irving hit a 3-pointer and a layup a steal for the first five points of the second overtime. Thompson followed with a basket and a three-point play to give Cleveland a 118-113 lead with 2:50 remaining, but the Hawks werent finished. Korver converted a four-point play with 2:33 remaining that cut the lead to one. Irving and Korver exchanged 3-pointers, Clevelands All-Star point guard followed with a jumper for a 123-120 lead. Following Shelvin Macks basket, Teague converted a three-point play to put Atlanta up 125-123. Irvings jumper tied the game with 55.8 seconds left. Teagues 3-pointer with 4.9 seconds left tied the game at 108-all in the first overtime. The Cavaliers called timeout, but Irving lost the ball out of bounds for one of his six turnovers, giving the Hawks one last shot with 2.4 seconds to go. Teague missed from the corner, forcing the second overtime. Two baskets by Horford, who scored 25 points, late in the fourth quarter tied the game at 95-all and neither team scored again in regulation. Cleveland centre Andrew Bynum, who missed all 11 of his shots and was scoreless Monday against Detroit, had four points and one rebound in 18 minutes. He went to the bench early in the third quarter and didnt return. Hawks forward DeMarre Carroll injured his right hand after running into a Tyler Zeller pick in the fourth quarter and didnt return. The Angels beat Seattle 6-5 Saturday night for their 21st victory in 28 games, but this surge came way too late. Earlier in the day, they were mathematically eliminated from post-season contention. After starting the year with big expectations, boosted by the winter signing of former MVP Josh Hamilton, the injury-plagued Angels didnt spend one day atop the AL West after winning their season opener at Cincinnati. The Angels have been no fewer than nine games out of first place since the All-Star break. This is their fourth straight year without a post-season berth, after winning five division titles. "I think the one word that still lingers out of all this clubhouse and how we all feel is certainly frustration," manager Mike Scioscia said. "I dont think theres been any way to sugarcoat it. Its obviously not a good feeling when you dont accomplish your goal. "Theres been some nonperformance on our club, some injuries and some depth issues. But I think weve gone a long way in the past month to show the kind of baseball we can play, particularly on the pitching side. Hopefully well temper that frustration and finish strong," he said. Collin Cowgill homered and also stole home for the Angels. Rookie Grant Green hit a three-run double to help Jerome Williams win his fourth straight start. Cowgill walked and scored in the second inning and hit a solo homer in the fourth. He tripled to open the seventh, then broke for the plate as Andrew Romine squared around to try a suicide-squeeze bunt, and scored when left-hander Joe Saunders pitch sailed to the backstop. Williams (9-10) allowed one run, five hits and five walks in 5 2-3 innings. He left after No. 9 hitter Henry Blanco snapped an 0-for-32 drought with a bloop single. "Anytime youre in the company of the great Ted Williams -- and its just this one thing that I have in common with him -- its a great blessing. I read his book when I was in high school, and he was the greatest hitter that ever lived." What made this milestone even sweeter for Ibanez was that it came with the Mariners, the team he began his big league career with in 1996. This is his third stint with the club. "Ive always considered myself a Mariner," said the 17-year veteran, who hit a career-high 34 homers in 2009 with Philadelphia. "This is the organization that first game me the opportunity. So to do this in a Mariners uniform, I feel very fortunate." Saunders (11-16) tied the Astros Lucas Harrell and the Cubs Edwin Jackson for the most losses in the majors. Saunders gave up six runs and six hits over seven innings and tied a career best with nine strikeouts. The 32-year-old left-hander threw 125 pitches, one short of his career high. CARSON, Calif. Marcos Rojo Manchester United Jersey . -- Seattles Eddie Johnson and Los Angeles Juninho traded first-half goals and the Sounders and Galaxy settled for a 1-1 draw Saturday night. Johnson headed home a corner kick to give Seattle a 25th-minute lead, and Juninho scored on a 24-yard free kick in first-half stoppage time. Seattle (15-8-5), which saw its five-game winning streak halted, increased its lead in the Western Conference and Supporters Shield standings to two points. Los Angeles (13-10-6) jumped back into fourth place in the West, five points behind the Sounders. Both teams were without their U.S. national team stars. Galaxy forward Landon Donovan sprained his ankle sustained last weekend and Sounders forward Clint Dempsey strained a calf in training this week. The Galaxy were dominant after halftime, scoring a potential tiebreaking goal that was waved off and created little else that was concrete. "We just werent good enough in the final third of the field, with the final pass or our look at the goal, and it made a difference in the game," Los Angeles coach Bruce Arena said. "We obviously got the one goal called back. If that was a foul, then maybe Eddie doesnt get his goal in the first half. I thought (the officiating) was inconsistent, and in a tight game like that, those kinds of plays and calls are what decides the outcome." Johnson scored on an open header from about 8 yards, losing Galaxy defender Omar Gonzalez as he started his run at the top of the box to get to Mauro Rosales serve. Johnson nearly scored another in the 39th, but Los Angeles goalkeeper Jaime Penedo leaped to grab his open shot in the box. Juninho tallied with the final touch of the first half, bending a free kick from just above the semicircle inside the left post. Rookie Gyasi Zardes forced a leaping save from Seattle goalkeeper Michael Gspurning with a blast toward the upper-right corner in the 19th minute, and he appeared to put the Galaxy ahead following a free kick 15 minutes into the second half, after Gonzalez headed Juninhos cross into the goalmouth. Referee Silviu Petrescu whistled the Galaxy for a foul, apparently on defender Todd Dunivant, while the ball was in the air. "I think they had a little more possession than we had, for sure," Seattle coach Sigi Schmid said. "But I think that we had some very dangerous chances. ... He won the 25-year-old tournament with an overall 16-under 272 for only his third victory in 18 years and 431 events on the European Tour. Grillo secured his best Tour finish with an overall 15-under 273 when he eagled the last hole for a round of 66. REGINA - The Saskatchewan Roughriders expect to see a much different Mike Reilly this weekend. Kenneth Vermeer Jersey . The Edmonton quarterback will be looking to help the Eskimos avenge a 39-18 opening-day thrashing when the Roughriders visit Commonwealth Stadium on Saturday. Watch this battle on TSN and TSN Mobile TV, today at 4pm et/1pm pt. "He has a different level of experience now," Roughriders head coach Corey Chamblin said, citing a number of intangibles such as "maturity" and "poise." Reilly, acquired in a trade with the B.C. Lions in the off-season, completed only 17 of 35 passes for 259 yards against Saskatchewan on opening day. He threw for a touchdown, but was intercepted three times. Now seven games into the season, Reilly has connected on 128 of 206 passes for 1,728 yards, with nine touchdowns and six interceptions. He has also carried the ball 26 times for 229 yards and a touchdown, and even caught a 15-yard touchdown strike from slotback Cary Koch. That includes an impressive performance in a close loss to Toronto last week, when he went 35-of-46 for 511 yards and three touchdowns. "He is definitely finding his groove," said Roughriders linebacker Weldon Brown. Chamblin observed that this is true of the Eskimos offence as a whole. "Theyre starting to do the things you have to do to win," Chamblin said. "Were going to have to play solid defence against them." In particular, the Roughriders must contend with Fred Stamps, a potentially explosive slotback who has 28 receptions for 573 yards and four touchdowns. "(Stamps) is a good receiver, without a doubt," said Roughriders defensive back Dwight Anderson. "This league has a lot of good receivers, and hes definitely one of them." Saskatchewan quarterback Darian Durant expressed a good deal of respect for Edmontons defensive front seven, and he stressed the importance of the ground game as a means of nullifying the pass rush. The Roughriders (6-1) and Eskimos (1-6) are at opposite ends of the West Division standings and Durant believes the best way to discourage any thoughts of an upset is "to jump on them early." Chamblin has been stressing all season that the Roughriders focus on "fundamentals and execution." Chamblin is a firm believer in the basics, and he isnt reluctant to makes changes. Case in point: Jock Sanders. Last weekend, in a thrilling 24-21 victory over the visiting Montreal Alouettes, Sanders twice fumbled the ball away on punt returns, and has been temporarily relieved of his responsibilities. Against the Eskimos, Chamblin said, the Roughriders will be returning punts "by committee." They will also be operating on offence without the services of wide receiver Rob Bagg, who was injured in the game against the Alouettes. Bagg has 14 catches for 225 yards and three touchdowns, but he also has a history of serious knee injuries. Fortunately, this latest occurrence has turned out to be less serious than was first thought. Team doctors have diagnosed it as a sprain, and according to Chamblin, Baggs status is day-to-day. "Robs an inspiration to everyone in the locker-room," said fellow wide receiver Scott McHenry, noting that in Baggs absence it will be necessary for "someone to step in and pick up the slack." SAN JOSE, Calif. Sergi Roberto Barcelona Jersey . -- Justin Brauns soft shot made it on net and the rebound floated in the air long enough for Joe Pavelski to bat it in for yet another goal. Thats the way its been going for Pavelski and the San Jose Sharks of late. Pavelski scored his 19th goal in the past 21 games and Alex Stalock made 20 saves in his second straight shutout to help San Jose beat Winnipeg 1-0 Thursday night, handing Paul Maurice his first loss in five games as coach of the Jets. "Ive been expecting to score for a while," Pavelski said. "Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesnt." Pavelski snapped a scoreless tie with 13:12 remaining for his third straight game-winning goal. He moved into sole possession of second place in the NHL with 28 goals this season, including seven in the past four games. "We hope it lasts for a long time," Sharks coach Todd McLellan said. "Right spot, right time, great hand-eye. ... Very good hand-eye co-ordination to put it in." The Sharks used that goal and another strong performance from their backup goalie to win their fifth straight game. Stalock, who got his first career shutout with 24 saves last Thursday in Florida, was just as stingy against the Jets and has allowed only four goals in winning his last four starts. "Obviously, it feels good to get a shutout," Stalock said. "I think in the last two games, maybe a total of 40 shots. You see that sometimes in one game, and it says a lot to spread that out among two games. You put it on a team effort, clearing away rebounds, and it makes it a lot simpler." Ondrej Pavelec made 31 saves for the Jets, who had won four straight since Maurice took over for Claude Noel. Winnipeg scored 16 goals in those four games but couldnt break through against San Jose two nights after handing Anaheim its first home loss in regulation all season. Winnipeg managed only nine shots on goal in the final two periods Thursday but kept San Joses chances to a minimum to stay in the game. "I like a lot of what I saw defensively," Maurice said. "Its what we are trying to do. Our offence needs to improve. I like this group; they are still young and have potential. These guys are willing and they listen." The winning goal was set up when Olli Jokinen made a poor clearing attempt out of the defensive zone for Winnipeg. Braun kept the puck in at the blue line and put a backhand on goal. Pavelski batted the rebound out of the air and into the net. "They got the bounce and we didnt," Jets defenceman Jacob Trouba said. "(Pavelec) certainly did a great job to keep us in it. We can take a lot of positives out of this game." The game was scoreless after two periods as both teams played tight defence and allowed few prime scoring chances or rebounds on the 37 combined shots. The Sharks had to kill penalties in the first period and needed a sprawling pad save from Stalock against Andrew Ladd on an odd-man rush late in the first period to keep it scoreless. San Jose appeared to get the first goal late in the second after it got a power play when Jokinen took down Joe Thornton in front of the net. Pavelski won the faceoff and then got into position to knock a rebound into an open net, but the goal was waved off because Thornton fell into Pavelec after being hit by Mark Stuart. It was the second time this season the Sharks were hurt by a disallowed goal against the Jets. On Nov. 10 in Winnipeg, Patrick Marleaus apparent overtime winner was disallowed because Tommy Wingels made contact with Pavelec in the crease. The Jets won that game 5-4 in a shootout. The Jets killed off the rest of the penalty and got another chance on the power play when Mike Brown was called for charging against Trouba. Winnipeg took exception to the hard hit into the boards but could not capitalize on the man advantage. NOTES: The Jets are just 7 for 76 on the power play on the road, second-worst in the NHL. ... They say they do -- especially after performances like this. Peters stopped 21 shots in his third career shutout and the Hurricanes beat the New York Islanders 1-0 on Thursday night. Radek Dvorak scored a deflected goal in the first period to help the Hurricanes win their second straight following a five-game slide that coincided with a lower-body injury to starting goalie Cam Ward. Peters has allowed a total of one goal in those victories. "Hes given us an opportunity to win these last two games," coach Kirk Muller said. "Hes done his job. Wed like to say were going to score more than one or two goals, but you know what, theres nights you dont have to. Hes given us a confidence that we can just go out and play our game ... and play it the way we want to play it." Peters, making his sixth straight start, made one of his best saves in the final minute of the second period when he stopped a streaking Michael Grabner after a turnover. The Hurricanes blocked 13 shots, three by forward Tuomo Ruutu. Peters finished with the Hurricanes first shutout of the season and his first since blanking Washington last March 12. "I want to create confidence in the team. I have confidence in them, and Im just trying to build that confidence," Peters said. "Every day, we become more confident in each other because we trust each other, because were playing the right way. When we play the right way ... thats when we get rewarded." All six of Carolinas wins have come by one goal. "Games are tight and theres not a lot of room out there," Muller said. "We found a way to win." Backup Kevin Poulin made 23 saves in his second start in six days for the Islanders. They have lost two straight and four of six, and were shut out for the firstt time this season. Marcelo Diaz Chile Jersey. "Its frustrating to sit here and not even get a point in that game when I felt we deserved a little better," coach Jack Capuano said, "but thats the way it goes." At the very least, their penalty-kill unit showed improvement. They shut down both of Carolinas power plays after giving up four goals with the man disadvantage in a 6-2 loss to the Capitals two nights earlier. The Hurricanes, who have made a habit of falling behind early, scored the first goal of a game for the first time since mid-October -- and needed a deflection to do it. "It was a little almost unusual we got that first one," forward Jordan Staal said. Poulin tried to clear the puck from behind the net but Ron Hainsey kept it in at the blue line, then threw it at the net and Dvorak tipped it in from the side of the net at 6:39. What turned out to be the games only goal also marked Carolinas first in a 5-on-5 situation since Oct. 25. In the four games in between, they scored four goals -- two on the power play, one with a sixth attacker and one in a 4-on-4 overtime to beat Philadelphia two nights earlier. Meanwhile, the Islanders gave themselves plenty of scoring chances but too few pucks on net: New York put just 12 shots on goal during the first two periods. "We gave him an opportunity to make that first save, and our D did a good job of blocking people out in front of the net and preventing those second and third rebounds," Muller said. Added Capuano: "Missed too many shots." NOTES: Hainsey has assists in two straight games -- his only two assists of the season. ... MILWAUKEE -- The Brewers have signed Lyle Overbay to a minor league contract, making him the latest candidate for the teams first-base job. Red Auerbach Jersey . His 53 doubles that year are a single-season franchise record. Overbay joins Mark Reynolds and Juan Francisco as potential options at first for Milwaukee. PHOENIX -- When the Suns sent Luis Scola to the Indiana Pacers over the summer, the highlight of the trade for Phoenix seemingly was getting a first-round draft pick. Gerald Green and Miles Plumlee? Green had bounced around the NBA when he wasnt playing overseas. The Pacers gave up on Plumlee after just one season. Now Green and Plumlee are key cogs in the Suns surprising breakout season. Green hit six 3-pointers and scored 22 points, while Plumlee added 17 points and grabbed a career-high 20 rebounds Monday night in a 117-90 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. "When you get players from other teams that may not have gotten the chance they think they deserved, you get the best out of them," Suns forward Channing Frye said. "Thats what theyre doing." Plumlee, who played in just 14 games for the Pacers as a rookie a year ago, had his way inside with an ailing Pao Gasol in the Suns third straight win. Green, who has played for seven NBA teams, has hit 16 3s over the past three games. "These stretches that he gets on, I dont know if theres many guys in the league that can do that," Suns coach Jeff Hornacek said. "We didnt anticipate that." Marcus Morris added 19 points on 5-of-6 shooting from 3-point range for Phoenix, which held a 62-39 edge on the boards in their eighth win in nine games. "Right now Phoenix is a better team than us," Lakers coach Mike DAntoni said, "especially in the condition we are in." Nick Young scored 19 points and Jodie Meeks 18 for the undermanned Lakers, who fell to 1-2 since Kobe Bryant was sidelined with a knee injury. Gasol, who sat out Saturdays loss to Golden State with an upper respiratory infection, started but had little energy as Plumlee scored on alley-oop dunks, post moves and putbacks. The second-year player from Duke hit 8 of 14 shots and blocked two shots as the surprising Suns moved to 17-10, their best start since 18-9 in 2009-10. "We dont know any different," Frye said of his young team. "We like winning." Gasol had 10 points and four rebounds in 20 minutes before he left the game for good midway through the third quarrter after bumping heads with Plumlee. Swingman Avery Bradley Jersey. That opened a gash that left him bleeding from the corner of his right eye. It was that kind of night for the Lakers, who watched the Suns hit 14 3-pointers in their sixth loss in nine games. "Why would I be discouraged?" a testy DAntoni said. "We are fighting with a bunch of good guys that played well before and they will play again. If (the fans) are discouraged, then find another team to root for. We are not going to give up. "Are you kidding me? Discouraged? That is not even fair to these guys. Theyre going to fight." The Lakers only healthy point guard was ex-Sun Kendall Marshall, signed last week and who committed four turnovers in six minutes in his debut Saturday. He didnt play until the game was decided in the fourth quarter. The 6-foot-6 Xavier Henry again started at point guard with Steve Blake (elbow), Jordan Farmar (hamstring) and Steve Nash (back) all sidelined. Despite being outrebounded by Plumlee alone (9-8) and committing 10 fouls in the first quarter, the Lakers only trailed 28-24. Then the Suns got hot from the outside -- again. After hitting just 1 of 7 3-pointers in the first quarter, Phoenix drained seven of their first nine in the second, including four from Green as the Suns built a 62-46 lead. The Suns, who extended their team record of hitting at least seven 3s to 19 games, built a 24-point third-quarter lead behind Plumlees work inside and Greens from the perimeter. "Weve pretty much simplified it for them," Frye said. "Gerald, come of the screen and shoot the ball. Miles, come off a screen and dunk the ball. "Its pretty simple, and I think theyre growing inside those roles." NOTES: DAntoni is "optimistic" Farmar will return Wednesday vs. Miami. Farmar will meet with doctors Tuesday. . While Blake is still weeks from returning and wearing a brace on his right arm, hes been able to work on his opposite hand and said he can now consistently make free throws lefty. . OAKLAND, Calif. New York City Jersey . -- Nate Robinson has played for seven teams, so beating one of them is no longer a rare occurrence. Still, it never gets old. Robinson scored 14 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter and the streaky Denver Nuggets outlasted the Golden State Warriors 123-116 on Wednesday night. "Ive embraced it," said Robinson, in his first season with the Nuggets. "I keep a journal every game. I write to myself and just reflect on my career. Its helped me cope with not getting the contract that I want or playing time or being on one team." Wilson Chandler and Ty Lawson each scored 22 points, and J.J. Hickson grabbed a season-high 24 rebounds to help give Oakland native and first-year Nuggets coach Brian Shaw a victory in his hometown. But Robinsons latest return to Golden State, where he played 51 games during the 2011-12 season, overshadowed Shaw late. The 29-year-old reserve guard finished 9-of-12 shooting, including 6 of 8 in the fourth quarter. "For me, my home is the NBA no matter what team I play for," Robinson said. "Ill always play the same way. Ill always play the right way, try to play to win and Im going to play with my heart every night, no matter how many minutes I play and how many teams I play for. If I could be the first player to ever play for every team in the league, I want to do it." David Lee had 28 points and 11 rebounds, and Stephen Curry scored 24 for the well-rested Warriors, who took the lead with 1:13 remaining before the Nuggets pulled away again. Golden State, which had won 11 of 12, hadnt played since beating Boston on Friday night. "Thats an excuse. I would say its because we were bad," Warriors coach Mark Jackson said. "Defensively, thats as bad as it gets." Both teams pushed the pace from the start in a back-and-forth game with incredible scores and few stops. For most of the fourth, Robinson stole the show. He made consecutive 3-pointers, a driving layup, a long jumper and a step-back shot during a scintillating display of offence that put Denver ahead 113-105 with 3:44 to play. "Hes a streaky player, and when hes on a good streak, hes as good as anybody in the league," Shaw said. The Warriors kept on coming, though, getting contributions from all over -- Curry hit a 3-pointer, Lee followed with a dunk and Klay Thompson made a pull-up jumper to bring the Warriors within one. After Chandler made a pair of free throws, Lee went 3 of 4 from the line to give Golden State a 116-115 lead. Hickson came back with a running shot that put the Nuggets back in front, then stole the ball from Curry and converted a layup on the other end while getting fouled to finish with 13 points. He missed the free throw, but Denver got the rebound. And after Lawson missed a jumper, Hickson grabbed another board. Lawson hit both free throws to give the Nuggets a 121-116 lead. Then Curry missed an open 3-pointer following a timeout to send most of the sellout crowd of 19,596 to the exits. "Theyre a team that can really score the basketball," Lee said, "so to put yourself in a hole really makes it tough." The two-faced Nuggets showed their better side in a rematch of last seasons first-round playoff series won by Golden State. Denver won seven straight from Nov. 21 to Dec. 3 and five in a row before losing at Utah on Monday night. The Nuggets also had an eight-game losing streak from Dec. 17 to Jan. 1. Golden States bench was short-handed after the team sent struggling backup guard Toney Douglas to the Miami Heat in a three-team trade. The Warriors acquired Jordan Crawford and reserve MarShon Brooks from the Boston Celtics, but neither player was available in time to face the Nuggets. Golden State had enough trouble with its starting unit in this one. The Nuggets shot 62 per cent in the first half to take a 65-58 lead. The Warriors shot 48 per cent before the break -- a solid performance on most nights -- but never could slow down Denver. Golden State tightened up defensively at the beginning of the third to briefly go ahead. Denver ended the quarter on an 11-2 run capped by Evan Fourniers half-court heave as time expired to carry a 91-82 lead into the fourth. NOTES: Warriors general manager Bob Myers said backup centre Jermaine ONeal is about two to three weeks from returning from right wrist surgery. Myers also said fellow big man Festus Ezeli, out all season recovering from knee surgery, will likely be out until at least March. ... In addition to long-term injuries to Danilo Gallinari (left knee) and JaVale McGee (left leg), the Nuggets were without forward Anthony Randolph (left ankle) and Andre Miller (indefinite leave). Mark Arcobello, a former teammate of Dubnyks with the Edmonton Oilers, scored twice as the Oklahoma City Barons defeated the Bulldogs 2-1 in the American Hockey League. "Having the time off that I have between games, I just tried to go out there and focus and get through the different situations while playing without worrying about doing backflips or anything," said Dubnyk. "Unfortunately, Arcobellos a pretty good hockey player and he made a nice shot on the first goal." Richard Bachman made 23 saves for the Barons (27-24-8). Nathan Beaulieu had the lone goal for the Bulldogs (25-26-5), while Dubnyk stopped 38 shots in a losing effort. The former Edmonton Oiler made the start for the Bulldogs in his first game with the club since being traded from Nashville on the afternoon of Wednesdays NHL trade deadline. He admitted that he was prepared for the move that sent him to his third organization this season. "Its been a little bit crazy," said Dubnyk. "As the weeks went by after the Olympic break, I started to see the writing on the wall a little bit. You know that a move is coming up, so you have some time to prepare, and Im happy that I was acquired by a team that wants me. "Going to Nashville was a new experience, but that was only a month and a half ago, so the suitcase was still packed. You learn how to move, and the guys are pretty welcoming in there. You have to earn respect whenever youre in a new group. You do that each day, and its been good so far." Hamilton head coach Sylvain Lefebvre was pleased with his new goaltenders first showing. "(Dubnyk) played great," he said. "He was a calming presence in the net and looked in control." Dubnyk didnt have to wait long before being forced into action, facing three shots in the first 30 seconds of the game. The Bulldogs nearly gave him some early goal support, as the combination of Louis Leblanc and Gabriel Dumont had a flurry of opportunities in close that Bachman knocked aside just over three minutes into the first period. That breakthrough did come, however, after a series of penalties left Hamilton with a 4-on-3 power play midway through the period. The penalty had just expired when Greg Pateryn threeaded a pass to his partner Beaulieu at the right faceoff dot, and he quickly snapped a high wrist shot past Bachman at the near post at 6:19. Jason Hernandez Jersey. Hamiltons lead was short-lived, as a mistake in the defensive end gifted an easy chance to Arcobello at 10:05 of the first. An unexpected bounce behind Dubnyks net brought the puck out front, where the stunned Dumont could do little but nudge it forward. There, Arcobello was waiting and raced into the slot before lifting a shot off the crossbar and past Dubnyk. Leblanc had a golden opportunity to score when he intercepted a loose puck in the neutral zone five minutes into the second period, and streaked in alone on Bachman. But the Oklahoma City goaltender stayed with him as the winger moved to the far post and slid a weak shot wide. The Barons punished that missed opportunity just over a minute later, when Arcobello struck for the second time on the power play. Cycling the puck effectively with the man advantage, the Barons found Anton Lander along the right boards, who slid a cross-ice pass to the wide open Arcobello inside the left circle. He took a low, one-time shot that slipped through the pads of Dubnyk as he crossed the crease at 6:49. The Bulldogs were left regretting another missed breakaway when Martin St. Pierre stole a pass at his defensive blue-line and skated in against Bachman 11 minutes into the second. Two Barons defenders interfered just enough with St. Pierre to make his wrist shot a weak one, and Bachman easily kicked it aside. Dubnyk faced 30 shots through two periods, and he was forced into several difficult saves in the periods final minutes. A glorious chance to level the game passed the Bulldogs by with six and a half minutes to play in the third. Dumont broke loose in the Barons zone and slid a pass to a wide open Mike Blunden in the low slot, but he was unable to get his stick on the moving puck. Lefebvre was disappointed with his teams lacklustre offence, particularly given their desperate situation in the AHL standings, where they sat seven points back of a playoff spot entering play on Friday. "We had some chances, but its not enough," he said. "Were fighting for our lives right now, and thats a team that we want to keep pace with. Those were two points that we desperately needed." Hamilton was 0-for-6 on the power play while Oklahoma City was 1-for-6. CHARLOTTE, N. Allen Iverson USA Jersey .C. -- Al Jefferson sat at his locker pondering how the Charlotte Bobcats nearly surrendered a 30-point lead they held late in the third quarter. "Of course we had to make it a game," Jefferson said with a grin. "We couldnt enjoy an easy win, right?" It never seems that easy for the Bobcats. Despite the big lead, Jefferson and Bobcats didnt breathe a sigh of relief until Ramon Sessions knocked down two free throws with 1.6 seconds left to secure a 100-95 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Monday. Jefferson became the first Bobcats player to record a double-double in the first quarter and finished with 22 points, 19 rebounds and a season-high seven assists and the Bobcats defeated the Raptors for the seventh straight time in Charlotte. "The important thing is we came out of it with a win," Jefferson said after the Bobcats withstood a furious Toronto rally that included several 3-pointers. It was Charlottes first game without point guard Kemba Walker, whose streak of 190 straight games played -- the second-longest in franchise history -- was snapped. Walker sprained his ankle in a loss Saturday night to the Miami Heat. But the Bobcats got more than enough from their two reserve point guards as Sessions and the seldom-used Jannero Pargo combined for 40 points on 10 of 17 shooting. Sessions started and had 23 points in 34 minutes and was 10 of 11 from the line. "We knew they were going to make a run sooner or later, especially with how good theyve been playing," Sessions said. "We didnt expect it to be that big of a run." DeMar DeRozan had 25 points and Kyle Lowry had 21 for the Atlantic Division-leading Raptors, who fell to .500 after their fourth straight road loss. The Raptors were down 71-41 with 4:37 left in the third quarter when they started to find some energy. They outscored the Bobcats 28-0 on second-chance points, but it still wasnt enough. Toronto twice had chances to tie the game in the final two minutes, but Lowry missed a free throw and Greivis Vasquez couldnt connect on a long 3-pointer. "To be a championship team or even think about the playoffs, youve got to play back-to-back, you have to play nicked up, youve got to play a little fatigued," Raptors coach Dwane Casey said. "Right now, we have a bunch of guys who are giving into fatigue and nicked up. Its a long season, but, again, you tell a lot about who you are in these situations. "This was a gut-check game. In the fourth quarter, we turned it around. But its about what we did in the first three quarters that was disappointing." Despite nearly surrendering a huge lead, Bobcats coach Steve Clifford called it a "big win" for his team with Walker out of the lineup. Jefferson, who came in averaging 27.8 points and 11.5 rebounds for his previous four games, had 14 points and 12 rebounds in the first half as the Bobcats went up 55-36. But the Raptors began double teaming Jefferson in the third quarter with Chuck Hayes the primary defender. "Chuck and I are great friends, but I hate him as a defender," Jefferson said. "Hes one of those guys thats very smart and you cant move him." Things got hairy for the Bobcats when DeRozan stripped Jefferson and went the length of the floor for an uncontested layup to trim the lead to three with 2:33 left. With 26 seconds left, Lowry drove the lane, scored and drew a foul on Jefferson to cut the lead to one. But he missed the free throw that would have tied the game. Sessions hit two free throws to push the lead back to three. Vasquez, who finished with 15 points and nine assists in his best game as a Raptor, got an open look from the right corner on the next possession but missed a 3-pointer from the right corner. Walker is expected to miss about two weeks after spraining his ankle in Saturday nights loss to Miami. He had 29 points against the Raptors on Dec. 18, including a buzzer beater in a 104-102 victory. But Sessions and Pargo provided a great spark. Sessions had nine points in the first quarter and Pargo came off the bench to hit his first three shots, including two 3-pointers, in his first four minutes of play in the second quarter. NOTES: The 36 points in the first half were the fewest allowed by the Bobcats all season -- they held the Raptors to 33 per cent shooting. ... FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. Pablo Alvarez New York City Jersey . -- The Atlanta Falcons were looking for two new starters on Monday after losing defensive end Kroy Biermann and fullback Bradie Ewing to season-ending injuries. Biermann tore his right Achilles tendon and Ewing separated his left shoulder in Sundays 31-24 win over the St. Louis Rams. Coach Mike Smith said Monday each will be placed on the reserve injured list. "As I say many times, one mans misfortune is another mans opportunity and weve got some guys that we expect are going to step up and make some plays for us," Smith said. The loss of Biermann will lead to expanded roles for defensive ends Jonathan Massaquoi and rookie Malliciah Goodman. The versatile Biermann also played a linebacker position which had him dropping back in pass coverage. "Theres a role for a (backup) defensive end when Kroy was playing defensive end and theres a role for one of the (backup) linebackers," Smith said. "Weve put that in place from the very beginning. "As you know, your roster never stays the same from year to year and usually it doesnt stay the same from week to week. We will make the adjustments and move forward." Biermann was credited with two tackles before leaving the field on a cart late in the first half. Biermann, a fifth-round pick in 2008, has 16 1/2 career sacks, including 4 in 2012. Osi Umenyiora, an off-season free-agent signee from the Giants, is the teams other starting defensive end. Ewings injury will lead to more playing time for Jason Snelling, who ran for a touchdown against the Rams after starting running back Steven Jackson left the game with a thigh injury. Snelling has played fullback and running back in his seven seasons with the Falcons. "Jason has always stepped up whenever hes had an opportunity," Smith said. "I thought he did an outstanding job yesterday." Ewing did not have a carry but had one catch for 14 yards before hurting his shoulder in the first quarter. This is the second straight year Ewing has suffered a season-ending injury. His tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee before his 2012 rookie season. Smith said he met with Ewing on Monday morning. "Its tough because hes not been able to stay on the field," Smith said. "Hes had the knee injury last year and it ended with him going on reserve injured early. The same thing is happening this year. "As I told him hey, weve just got to get you healthy. March and April will roll around and well reconnect and get moving forward." The Falcons beat the Rams despite losing five starters with injuries: Biermann, Ewing, Jackson, linebacker Sean Weatherspoon (foot) and cornerback Asante Samuel (thigh). Samuel missed the opening game at New Orleans with a thigh injury. Backup defensive end Cliff Matthews returned after leaving with a neck injury. The Falcons had other injury concerns entering the game. Receiver Roddy White has been slowed by an ankle sprain since the third week of the preseason. His playing time has been limited in the first two regular-season games. Receiver Julio Jones (knee), offensive tackle Sam Baker (back) and defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux (knee) started against St. Louis after being listed as questionable. "You know, hed be fun to watch if you werent coaching the other team," Clifford said. James scored 30 points to help Miami beat Charlotte 97-81 Saturday night for the Heats 13th straight victory against the Bobcats. With Mario Chalmers suspended, Chris Bosh limited due to foul trouble, Ray Allen out with the flu and Dwyane Wade a non-factor, James came up big for the Heat. The four-time MVP was 13 of 18 from the field and had seven assists in his eighth 20-point game this season. "More than anything, it was his energy," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said of James. "When you see him attacking off the glass and pushing coast to coast, you know he feels good with his body and you know it sets a great tone for our team. Hes playing with great energy on both ends of the court." Miami (7-3) relied on its bench to close the game out. Of Miamis 29 points in the fourth quarter, 23 came from reserves Michael Beasley, Chris Anderson, Rashard Lewis and Roger Mason Jr. Beasley finished with 15 points and Anderson had 10 for the Heat, winners of six of their last seven overall. Bosh said it was an odd feeling having so many starters out of the game in the fourth quarter with the outcome still in doubt. "I dont know when the last time that has happened," Bosh said. "But (the reserves) kept the lead at a nice distance. We were rooting for them and encouraging them because we need everybody -- one through 15 -- to not only raise their play but sustain it." James said he had intentions of returning to the game late in the fourth quarter but didnt need to after the Heats reserves began to pull away with the lead. "Once they got going I just said let them keep going," James said. "They had a great rhythm." Kemba Walker had 22 points to lead the Bobcats, who shot 35 per cent from the field. Jeffery Taylor scored 14 points and has now finished in double digits in six of the last seven games. The Bobcats (5-5) had won two straight comingg in, and stayed within 10 points for a good portion of the fourth quarter but could never grab the lead. Andrea Pirlo Jersey. . "Weve got to keep on pushing," Walker said. "I think weve been playing some great basketball right now. Its still early in the season. All we have to do is keep looking forward and keep trying to get better." James had 20 points in the first half on 8-of-11 shooting and Miami led by as many as 16. Only one of James first-half field goals came from outside of 10 feet as he did his damage driving and attacking the basket. Its a good thing for Miami that James was on his game early because the other parts of the big three struggled. Wade only played 23 minutes after his knee tightened up, while Bosh had three fouls and no points in eight first-half minutes. Bosh would later pick up his fifth foul with 4:27 left in the third quarter and drew a technical foul after hed taken a seat on the bench. A few seconds later, Spoelstra began chirping at the officials and he was slapped with a technical, too. But the Heat survived, in part because of their defence. James said thats a good sign. "At the end of the day if we dont defend we arent going to be able to compete where we want to compete," James said. "It was nice to see us play with a lot of energy tonight." Chalmers was serving a one-game suspension after being ejected from the Heats 110-104 victory over Dallas on Friday night. Chalmers was called for flagrant-2 foul with 5:01 remaining in the fourth quarter after referees ruled he intentionally swung an elbow at Dirk Nowitzkis head as he tried to fight through screen. Before Saturday nights game Spoelstra said he "disagreed" with the NBAs decision to suspend Chalmers. "We dont have to agree with it," Spoelstra said. "What we can do is agree to disagree."
