Nine days before the opening ceremony, organizing committee chief Dmitry Chernyshenko said Wednesday that Sochi is "fully ready" and will deliver safe, friendly and well-run games that defy the grim reports that have overshadowed preparations. SOCHI, Russia -- Canada was a second-half team at the 2010 Winter Olympics. The medal intake in Sochi is forecasted to happen at a more measured pace. Starting with Saturdays mens snowboard slopestyle and womens moguls, Canada has at least one legitimate medal shot, if not more, virtually every day until the closing ceremonies Feb. 23. Chef de mission Steve Podborski and his assistants Jean-Luc Brassard and France St. Louis intend to be present at events where a Canadian is a front-runner for a medal. "I would say were booked every day," Podborski said at a Canadian Olympic Committee news conference Thursday. The host country won 18 of its 26 medals in Vancouver during the back half of the Games. Ten of the 14 gold medals came in the second half, including four on the final weekend. Sports making their Olympic debut helped balance the schedule of Canadas medal prospects in Sochi. Mens and womens snowboard slopestyle, the figure skating team event and the luge relay are among the new events over the first eight days of competition in which Canada has solid medal prospects. Thats in addition to Canadas strength in the entrenched sports of alpine skiing, moguls, short-track speedskating and cross-country skiing. "Sure there are new sports and we happen to be very, very good in the new ones because we are a great sporting nation," Podborski said. "With the support were getting now from corporate Canada, Own The Podium and the Government of Canada, we have an opportunity to be good in the traditional sports as well and thats where well make our great gains in the areas where are athletes are getting better . . . cross-country, alpine skiing." Canadas athletes have been waging fierce foosball tournaments in their village lounge while they await Fridays opening ceremonies, according to Podborski. But Olympic competition started early for some Canadians with Thursdays preliminary rounds. Canada sat in second place, two points behind host Russia, after the first day of the new team figure skating event. Torontos Patrick Chan was third in the mens short program, then Meagan Duhamel of Lively, Ont., and Eric Radford of Balmertown, Ont., were second in the pairs short to give Canada 17 of a possible 20 points after the first two events. Sebastien Toutant of LAssomption, Que., and Max Parrot of Bromont, Que., advanced to the mens snowboard slopestyle final Saturday, while Charles Reid of Mont-Tremblant, Que., and Reginas Mark McMorris will attempt to join them via the semifinal earlier in the day. The Dufour-Lapointe sisters from Montreal -- Justine, Chloe and Maxime -- all qualified for Saturdays womens moguls finals as did Audrey Robichaud of Quebec City. Reigning world champion Spencer OBrien of Courtney, B.C., qualified for the womens slopestyle final Sunday. Hockey Canada also made the decision to replace injured forward Steven Stamkos with Tampa Bay teammate Martin St. Louis. No competition is scheduled Friday because of the opening ceremonies. In addition to slopestyle and womens moguls on opening weekend, skiers Erik Guay of Mont-Tremblant, Que., Calgarys Jan Hudec and Manny Osborne-Paradis of Invermere, B.C., are medal prospects in Sundays downhill. Canadas figure skaters are favoured to win a medal in the team event, which ends Sunday. Canadas objective in 2010 was to top the overall medal count and the target remains the same in Sochi. The host team was third in total medals, but won the gold-medal race four years ago. Because of the new sports, there are 36 more medals to be won in 2014 than in 2010. That will help fill Canadas coffers, but also those of top rivals Germany, Norway, the United States and host Russia. "Canada is here to compete and win," COC president Marcel Aubut said. "Our aim is to contend for the number one spot in medals won. Custom Hawks Jersey. ." "This is an ambitious goal, but we Canadians like it this way. Our athletes expect nothing less of themselves but the highest achievements." Added Podborski: "You dont try to come "somewhere up there." We expect great things in Canada now. Its an ideal approach. "We may not win the medal count this time. We may not win it the next time but one day we will because we are striving to be number one in the world in the medal count." While Canadas preparation for 2010 seems a successful model to copy for Sochi, the Canadian Olympic Committee took a different approach. The 2008 Summer Games in Beijing posed similar challenges to Sochi in terms of distance to travel, time-zone difference and unfamiliar language, food and culture. Virtually all of Canadas Olympians competed, trained or at least visited Beijing in the year prior to those Games to get comfortable with the place. The same practice was done for Sochi. There was less emphasis on pre-Games visits for the 2012 Summer Games in London. "If we look at the Beijing experience and we look at the Sochi experience, its actually very similar," COC chief sport officer Caroline Assalian says. "New and unfamiliar environment for most countries. "We ensured that the athletes and support teams as much as possible are familiar with this environment." The COC has conducted exit interviews with athletes, their coaches and support teams following Olympic Games since 2006 to better plan for the next. The athletes were asked "what made the difference in your performance?" "Their number one factor? Feeling part of a larger unified team, more than anything," Assalian said. "Thats what made the difference for them. Coaches and support team? Familiarity with the Olympic environment." And where Beijing was also a benchmark for Sochi was in Canadas conversion rate, which the number of athletes ranked in the top five at their most recent world championships make it onto the podium at the subsequent Olympic Games. The COC employs conversion rates to compare how Canadas athletes are performing compared to other countries. Even though Canada won just 18 medals in Beijing, the conversion rate there was 67 per cent compared to 59 per cent at the Winter Games of both 2010 and 2006, according to Assalian. The Canadian team needs at least match Beijings conversion rate to be in the hunt for the overall title in Sochi. "Our bar now is Beijing," Assalian says. "We know we need to convert better than we ever have at any Winter Olympic Games." The Canadian team will attempt this without the advantage it had in Vancouver and Whistler of home ice and home snow. Own The Podium chief executive officer Anne Merklinger says many winter sport teams have stronger leadership and better coaches since 2010. Both areas were priorities coming out of Vancouver and Whistler and she hopes improvements there compensate for the additional challenges of Sochi. "Weve come a long way in that regard," she says. "Without coaches, were behind the 8-ball. Its the most important success factor. "I think there are a number of examples where weve brought in great coaches, but weve lost some too. We need to find a way to continue to retain the good ones we have and attract new ones." "Were investing in that. Thats what it takes. Its a competitive industry." OTP oversees athletes competitive lives between Olympic Games and allocates about $62 million a year in federal government funding between summer and winter sports. The COC prepares athletes for the Games environment and looks after their needs and wants on the ground in Sochi. ST. Adidas Zapatillas Mujer Rebajas . PAUL, Minn. -- Zach Parise and the Minnesota Wild kept their chins up and turned what could have been a negative outcome into a positive. Parise and Jason Pominville scored in the shootout, lifting Minnesota to a 2-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday night. Parise tied the game late in the third period for Minnesota, which has won five of six and is 8-1-2 in its last 11. The Wild have been involved in three straight shootouts -- winning two. In the shootout, Parise beat Jonathan Bernier low on the left side before Josh Harding stopped Raymond. Mikko Koivu was stopped by Bernier and Phil Kessel lost control of the puck before Pominville beat Bernier through the pads for the win. "We had little bit more of a feeling that this game was there for us if we could keep going," Minnesota coach Mike Yeo said. Parise tied it with 4:17 to play in regulation when, after a turnover by Kessel, Charlie Coyles shot from low on the right side deflected off Parises skate and into the net. The goal came 2 minutes after the Wild managed to get one shot on a 5-minute power-play after Nazem Kadri was assessed a match penalty for hitting Mikael Granlund in the head. "He made initial contact with the shoulder and the kid had his head down, he didnt have his arms up, he ran into the player, Granlund snapped his head back and obviously, the referee saw it differently, and obviously, with a five-minute match penalty, itll be reviewed," said Toronto coach Randy Carlyle. However, Minnesota heard plenty of boos from the crowd as it got off just one shot during the man-advantage. "Even the guys that were power-play guys were coming back saying, Cmon, we still got lots of time, talking, saying the right things and these are the leaders of your team," Yeo said. "Ive been part of many games where you have something like that and frustration creeps in and its real easy to have some type of letdown or start to deviate or get away from staying with it, trusting it, and they didnt." The hit on Granlund was Kadris second action for which he will likely be hearing from the league. Kadri was not made available to the media. Minnesotas starting goaltender, Niklas Backstrom, was run over by Kadri 7 minutes into the game, and lay flat on the ice for about 30 seconds before slowly sitting up. Kadris elbow appeared to hit Backstrom in the head. Yeo said Backstrom has an upper-body injury. Backstrom, starting for the first time since Oct. 28, stayed in the game until a stoppage with 10:31 left in the period before skating to the bench and heading to the dressing room. He had three saves. "Thatll be interesting to see what happens there because it looks like he got him right in the head," Parise said. "Thats what were trying to get rid of. Itll be interesting to see what they decide." Mason Raymond scored a power-play goal for Toronto, which has scored just three regulation goals in its last four outings. Jonathan Bernier had 33 saves. Toronto nearly won it late in overtime, but Harding got a right pad on a tip by Morgan Rielly and then reached back to grab the puck just outside the goal line. "Theyre a good team in their building and at least we came up with one point. Weve just got to move on," Bernier said. Harding had 19 saves in relief of Backstrom. He started the past five games and was to be given the night off due to sickness. Instead, he increased his save percentage to .947, second-best on the NHL, while lowering his league-best goals-against average to 1.21. There wasnt much he could do as Raymond gave the Maple Leafs a 1-0 lead at 7:32 of the second period, when he gathered a loose puck that hit traffic in front and tucked it behind a sprawled Harding. It was just Torontos second power-play goal in 16 chances over six games. Minnesota had two power plays early in the third period, but came no closer than Koivu hitting the crossbar. LJUBLJANA, Slovenia -- France ended Spains reign as European basketball champion Friday with a 75-72 overtime victory behind 32 points from Tony Parker to set up a final against Lithuania hoping for its first title. Isiah Thomas Jersey . Two-time defending champion Spain led by 14 points at halftime but Parker led Frances comeback after the break, and his 3-pointer with 2 minutes left gave France its first lead of the second half, 64-63. "We wanted to be aggressive but until halftime we werent really playing," France coach Vincent Collet said. "We talked about it during the break and we came back very different. They couldnt score for five minutes in the third and even when they started hitting shots again our spirit stayed the same." With the score level 65-65, Parker had a chance to win the game in regulation but his drive to the basket was blocked by Rudy Fernandez with 11 seconds left. Jose Calderon then missed a 3-point attempt at the other end. In overtime, Parker and Antoine Diot scored Frances last 8 points from the free-throw line to keep their team in front and Marc Gasol missed a desperation 3 at the buzzer after Rodriguez had missed a previous attempt to tie it. "We had the last shots in both regulation and overtime but we missed," Spain coach Juan Orenga said. Diot was the only other French player in double figures with 10 points, while Gasol led Spain with 19 points and nine rebounds and Fernandez scored 17. Point guard Ricky Rubio was largely ineffective, with 2 points, one assist and four turnovers. "We put a lot of intensity in the game and it allowed us to come back in the second half," Diot said. Spain beat France to win the title two years ago, but this time it was missing Pau Gasol and Juan Carlos Navarro. Spain will now play Croatia for the bronze. "Its very disappointing to lose a game we led for 37 minutes. We played great defence in the first half but in the second we let them play their rhythm," said Rodriguez, who finished with 11 points, 9 assists and 6 rebounds. Parker finished with five turnovers and only one assist, along with six rebounds. Lithuania earlier reached its first final since winning the title 10 years ago by beating Croatia 77-62 and is looking for its fourth championship. Jonas Maciulis led Lithuania with 23 points, Linas Kleiza added 22 and Mantas Kalnietis had 18 as the three of them combined to outscore Croatia. Lithuania centre Jonas Valanciunas provided some big defensive plays with five blocks, while Bojan Bogdanovic led Croatia with 15 points. "It was a difficult game mentally because we knew how important it was," Maciulis said. "Both teams came out shot-shy and we were the first to take the lead." Lithuania went on an 18-3 run to start the third quarter that decided the game. Maciulis scored two consecutive 3-pointers and made a jump shot during that run, while Kalnietis added seven points. Lithuania also used a big third quarter to beat Italy in Thursdays quarterfinal. "They came out in the second half and took a great advantage, we could not catch up," Croatia forward Damjan Rudez said. Lithuania won the European title in 2003 and was bronze medallist at the 2010 worlds but has not made the podium in Europe since taking bronze in 2007 and lost in the quarterfinals at home two years ago. "It was an important win for our generation, to show that we can play well and win a medal. We are trying to prove to people who thought we were not a good team that we can win," Maciulis said. Croatia coach Jasmin Repesa said Lithuania "played much better" than his team. "They are bigger, faster, more athletic," Repesa said. Reggie Jackson Jersey . LOUIS -- Theres no telling how these wacky World Series games will end. NEW YORK -- Alex Rodriguezs grievance hearing to overturn his 211-game suspension ended Thursday when both sides rested their cases, a day after the New York Yankees third baseman angrily walked out and decided not to testify in his own defence. The sides set a schedule to file briefs and reply briefs next month, which will close the record and submit the matter to arbitrator Fredric Horowitz. His decision on whether to uphold or alter the discipline for the three-time AL MVP likely will be made in January, a person familiar with the proceedings told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no statements were authorized. Rodriguezs lawyers already are vowing to challenge the ruling in federal court, where judges usually are reticent to overturn an arbitration decision unless there is a finding the arbitrator was biased, exceeded his authority or failed to comply with the rules agreed to by the parties. The exact timing of a decision is uncertain. Baseballs Joint Drug Agreement states the arbitrator shall make "all reasonable efforts" to close the record in time to permit a decision within 25 days of the start of the hearing. But in this case, the hearing began Sept. 30, making that timetable impossible to meet. After the arbitrator renders his decision, the written opinion is to be issued within 30 days. It is unclear if Horowitz will issue his written opinion simultaneously with his decision. The timing of the case could complicate planning for the Yankees, who dont know if they will have to pay Rodriguez his $25 million salary and are unsure whether they will need a different starting third baseman. Rodriguez was suspended by Major League Baseball on Aug. 5 for alleged violations of its drug policy and labour agreement stemming from the leagues investigation of the Biogenesis of America anti-aging clinic in Florida. The players association filed a grievance, and because Rodriguez was a first-time offender of the drug agreement, the discipline automaticaally was stayed pending a resolution of the grievance. Chauncey Billups Pistons Jersey. Horowitz heard the case in a trio of four-day sessions, with management presenting its case from Sept. 30-Oct. 3 and Oct. 15-18. Rodriguezs side then took its turn during the first four days of this week. While Horowitz had set aside six additional days for testimony through Wednesday, that time was not needed. Rodriguez left in the middle of the 11th session Wednesday, furious the arbitrator refused to order baseball Commissioner Bud Selig to testify. Rodriguez and his lawyers then went on radio and television, accusing Selig of bias and the entire arbitration process of being flawed. His lawyers returned without him Thursday to complete their case, and MLB started and finished its rebuttal. At the end of the hearing, the sides learned union head Michael Weiner had died from the brain tumour he was diagnosed with 15 months ago. Outside MLBs offices, representatives of the New York Hispanic Clergy Organization, including state Sen. Ruben Diaz, held a prayer vigil to express opposition to Rodriguezs discipline. Rodriguez lawyer James McCarroll issued a statement Thursday pointing out that this case is the first grievance under the drug agreement involving discipline that didnt stem from a positive test and involved "the commissioners discretion and decision-making." While he said the commissioner in the past "was harshly criticized in the arbitrators decision for not voluntarily appearing at a grievance," that statement appears to refer to arbitrator George Nicolaus 1987 decision cutting Peter Ueberroths drug suspension of pitcher LaMarr Hoyt from one season to 60 days. While Horowitz has issued an order for the proceeding to be confidential, Rodriguezs lawyers have said they may release some of the evidence Friday. Rodriguez spokesman Ron Berkowitz said no decision had been made. "Its uncertain," he said. "Theyre still weighing their options of what they can and cannot release." A win in Southern California would be a boost to the Flames (3-0-2). The last time they won in Anaheim was back on Jan. 19, 2004 when the Ducks (4-1-0) were still known as the Mighty Ducks. "I never knew that, so I think that would be cool to get a win there," said Monahan, who scored the game-winning goal in Calgarys last game at home on Friday to propel the Flames to a 3-2 win over the New Jersey Devils. Monahan is currently riding a four-game, goal-scoring streak. The six-foot-two, 185-pound centre leads the Flames with four goals, to go with two assists, and has recorded at least one point in every game he has played. "Im sure you guys realize how mature he is for a guy whos just turned 19 (on Saturday)," said Calgary captain Mark Giordano. "If you watch him play, if you really watch his game, hes such a smart, headsy player. You cant teach what he has. Hes in a great spot all the time and when he gets those chances around the net he finishes, so its been pretty to watch so far." Calgary used the sixth overall selection to choose Monahan in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft last June and the Flames still have the option to send him back to junior with the OHLs Ottawa 67s. Monahans entry level contract will kick in as soon as he plays his 10th game with Calgary, which is slated to take place on Oct. 24 in Dallas against the Stars. Calgary coach Bob Hartley hasnt yet discussed the possibility of assigning Monahan back to the 67s with general manager Jay Feaster or president of hockey operations Brian Burke. "We know how to count to nine, so eventually well have a breakfast or a lunch or a dinner," Hartley said. "Im sure were going to be talking about it." For now, Monahan will just go about his business of turning heads with his play in an effort to stick with the Flames for the rest of the season. "Im going to try and be the same player Ive been and just continue to learn things and build on my game and try and be an everyday pro and let the cards fall where they fall," said Monahan, who is coming off of back-to--back 78-point seasons with the 67s. Canada Goose Jacket Womens Sale. "Im here to do my job and do my part and theyre going to make the decision whenever they want to, so well see what happens." Fellow Flames rookie Sven Baertschi has enjoyed playing on the same line with Monahan and is hoping they can continue to build upon the chemistry they have developed. "We understand each other really well, so it makes it easier to make plays right now," said Baertschi, who has put up a goal and two assists through five games. "For him, the main thing is hes just got to keep going, to keep playing the same way hes playing. In the end, thats the decision somebody else has to make for him. Hes been great here. Hes been outstanding." Baertschi knows what its like to be under the microscope as a highly-touted, first-round pick of the Flames. Calgarys 13th overall selection in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft started the season with the Flames last year, but was sent down to play in the minors with the AHLs Abbotsford Heat after going scoreless in his first four games. Baertschi was eventually recalled and finished the season on a seven-game point-scoring streak, during which time he had three goals and six assists. "I really enjoy it right now that Im not always in the spotlight," said Baertschi, who wants to do his part to extend Monahans current streak. "He should keep doing that well, so I can just do my thing and relax and make sure hes scores goals and keep him happy." Monahan credited Baertschi with helping him through the process of adapting to life in the NHL. "Obviously were both kind of in the same boat right now and were both working hard to try and play on this team full time," Monahan said. "Svens a good player. We get along. We talk a lot on the ice, off the ice. Right now, were finding each other. I think were only going to get better." Goalie Joey MacDonald, who will start his fifth straight game for Calgary against Anaheim, has enjoyed all the youthful exuberance hes seen with the Flames early in the season. "With the young guys we have here, weve got lots of energy," MacDonald said. "Everybodys excited to get back at it (in Anaheim). Its a tough place to get a win. Weve got a new fresh start here and a great bunch of young guys. Hey, you know what? Were up to the task." NASHVILLE -- The Nashville Predators have swapped defencemen with the New York Rangers, sending right-handed shooter Kevin Klein to New York in exchange for a lefty in Michael Del Zotto. Martavis Bryant Steelers Jersey . The Predators announced the trade Wednesday before heading to Vancouver for a four-game road swing. "Michael gives us another young, gifted left-handed shooting defenceman with significant offensive upside," Predators general manager David Poile Poile said in a statement. "We look forward to his presence on our already talented young blue line, further balancing our defensive corps." Del Zotto, 23, has 11 points in 42 games for the Rangers averaging 17 minutes, 44 seconds of ice time per game. The 6-foot, 195-pound Del Zotto was the 20th overall choice by the Rangers in the 2008 draft, and he has 121 career points in 292 career NHL games. But Del Zotto never seemed to fully fit since coach Alain Vigneault replaced the fired John Tortorella after last season. Del Zotto was a healthy scratch from Vigneaults lineup for nine games, but was back in for the 10 games before Wednesdays deal. Del Zotto, who can become a restricted free agent this summer, carries a $2.55 million salary cap charge this season. Klein was one of four right-handed shooting defencemen in Nashville and something the Rangers have wanted. Del Zotto is a lefty shooter. Adding Klein and removing Del Zotto will allow John Moore to move to the left side for the Rangers. Klein, 29, was the 37th choice overall in 2003 by Nashville and has played 403 games in nine NHL seasons. He has three points in 47 games this season and ranks 22nd in the NHL with 94 blocked shots. Klein also is under contract through 2017-18 after signing a five-year, $14.5 million deal in September 2012 giving him a $2.9 million salary cap hit each season. "Thanks everyone!," Klein wrote on Twitter. "Going to miss the friends I have made in Nashville. But a new chapter in New York." Shamarko Thomas Steelers Jersey . GLENDALE, Ariz. Shamarko Thomas Steelers Jersey . -- The Phoenix Coyotes gave Dave Tippett his 450th career victory with just the kind of game the coach loves: gritty defensive play, strong goaltending and a bit of resiliency. Martin Hanzal had a goal and an assist, Mike Smith stopped 32 shots and the Coyotes held off the New Jersey Devils 3-2 on Saturday night, handing Tippett another milestone win. "If youre going to win in this league, you need that (gritty play) every night," said Tippett, who also notched his 100th home victory in Phoenix. "It was nice to see us come through with a couple wins like that." Coming off a shutout victory in their last game, the Coyotes got off to a strong start with a pair of goals from their fourth line. Jeff Halpern had one and Jordan Szwarz had the other before playing the third period with stiches in his chin after being cut with a skate late in the second. Hanzal gave the Coyotes a two-goal cushion, but they had to hold on against New Jerseys big push to earn their first winning streak since beating Colorado and the New York Islanders on Dec. 10-12. "One of our key points coming in was getting off to a fast start and I felt like we did a good job doing that," Szwarz said. "We put a lot of pucks behind their defence and we were able to block some shots early to get off to a good start, then finish it off." New Jersey got off to a sluggish start at the end of a four-game road trip before rallying to make it close. Ryane Clowe had a goal and an assist and Jaromir Jagr scored his 696th career goal with 2:14 left in regulation. Jagr had another good chance with just over a minute left, but was stopped by Smith to end the Devils point streak at six games. "We got off to a slow start and that was disappointing, inexcusable really for not having played yesterday," Devils coach Peter DeBoer said. "We cant spot anyone two goals. Thats the bottom line." Phoenix got back to its defensive roots in its last game Thursday night, beating Vancouver 1-0 behind Smiths first shutout of the season and the return of defenceman Zbynek Michalek after he missed 13 games with a hip injury. Before that, the Coyotes had been erratic in their own end and lost 12 of their previous 16 games. New Jersey has had the opposite problem. The Devils have been solid behind the blue line lately, allowing six goals over the past five games. The problem has been scoring: New Jersey has scored 117 goals, 25th in the league. The Coyotes were sharp in the first period. Kyle Chipchura tracked down the puck behind the goal and sent a pass out front to Szwarz, who one-timed it past Martin Brodeurs stick side for Phoenixs first even-strength goal in more than 184 minutes. Halpern made it 2-0 by taking a feed from Moss and beating Brodeur to the glove side from the left circle for his second of the season. Phoenix dominated most of the opening period, but New Jersey got on the board when Clowe punched in a power-play rebound for his second of the season at 18:44. Hanzal put the Coyotes up 3-1 late in the second on a power play, tipping a shot by Keith Yandle then muscling it past Brodeur for his 14th of the season. Jagr cut the lead to one after New Jersey pulled Brodeur for an extra attacker, but Smith made some tough saves in the final minute. "If we would have had at least two lines going, it would have been a different story, but we only had one line doing anything," Jagr said. The Raptors announced the completion of a seven-player swap Monday, officially sending rental star Rudy Gay to Sacramento along with the seldom used Aaron Gray and Quincy Acy in exchange for guard Greivis Vasquez, swingman John Salmons and forwards Patrick Patterson and Chuck Hayes, a deal first reported by Yahoo Sports Sunday evening. In just over six months on the job, the Raptors general manager has quickly made his presence felt, as expected after he inherited Bryan Colangelos roster back in May. It didnt take him long to jettison maligned forward Andrea Bargnani - the face of the Colangelo era - to New York and with Mondays transaction he bid farewell to Gay, his predecessors second marquee mistake. Ujiri has made his statement. This team is now his to build as he sees fit. How he plans to do that still remains unclear, despite adding a pair of necessary, albeit significant transactions to his already impressive resume. "I couldnt tell you where the team is going to go from here," Ujiri said, addressing the local media at the Air Canada Centre for the first time since the trade was made official late Monday afternoon. "Sometimes you have to make a change." "I know people speculate different things on the direction," he said, referring to the elephant in the room; the T-word (tank) that has been hovering over this team like a black cloud long before he accepted the gig in Toronto. "We made a move that creates certainty." Looking at Ujiris resume - his early returns at the helm of the Raptors and his time spent in Denver - theres an obvious trend that has defined his brief, yet mostly successful career as a lead NBA executive. The Raptors GM leaves as little to chance as humanly possible. Time and time again he has taken his teams fate out of the collective hands of his players and into his own. More than anything else he values flexibility. When it appeared Carmelo Anthony was destined to hold the Nuggets hostage in free agency Ujiri flipped the script, waiting patiently and parlaying Denvers best player into more manageable assets. On Sunday he did the same with Gay, a player attached to a contract - like Bargnani - that many believed could not be moved. Although Gay can opt out of the final year of his deal at the end of the season, it seems impossible to imagine him walking away from the $19.3 million hes owed in his option year while hes mired in the worst statistical campaign of his career. Naturally, the Raptors front office had safely just assumed the forward would be on ttheir books next year, eating up a sizeable portion of their payroll, hampering their ability to plan ahead. Custom Steelers Jersey. "That option was tough on our part," Ujiri admitted, citing the uncertainty of Gays contract as a motivating factor behind the deal, it left them in limbo he said. "That option really put us in a tough position to plan." Therein lies Ujiris fundamental goal as he continues to dismantle a disjointed unit; attaining the roster and financial flexibility necessary to build on the fly. He executed it to perfection in Denver, remaining competitive and even improving as a team after the Anthony trade when many believed the Nuggets were poised to bottom out. Ujiri wont use the T-word. He detests the word and what it represents. But he also insists the organization wont "be stuck in no-mans land." He cant have it both ways, not unless he can pull off something remarkable and duplicate the award-winning magic he performed in Denver. Barring a complete tear down - which remains possible but still seems unlikely - the Raptors are still too good to bottom out, as many expect they will. Exchanging Gay and his contract for the Kings quartet was a stroke of genius. Toronto can save roughly $12 million next season if Salmons is bought out for $1 million and the team renounces its rights to Vasquez and Patterson. Still, the move gives us little-to-no indication on the direction Ujiri intends to take. Both trades - Gay and Bargnani - were about ridding the team of expendable pieces that just didnt fit, not dumping star players in an outward attempt to be bad. On the contrary. The absence of Gay, his high usage rates and his inefficiency could and likely will make them a better team. "It just didnt work out," Ujiri said of Gays 10-month tenure in Toronto. "I think it was just a chemistry [issue] with the team. I think everybody saw there was no sync there." So now we wait. We wait for Ujiris next move and the consensus around the team, around the league, is that it wont be long. Gay will not be the last domino to fall and the GMs subsequent moves should, in theory, tip his hand. Everyone on this roster is available, at the right price. Would Ujiri be willing to listen to offers for Jonas Valanciunas? Is DeMar DeRozan safe now that the similar Gay has been dealt, or do you sell high on what appears to be an emerging star at his position? Is Kyle Lowry the next to go, as most expect? And what of Amir Johnson, who should be a valuable trade chip as the deadline approaches? In moving Gay, and Bargnani, Ujiri has already done most of the heavy lifting. Now the Raptors GM has options, and he wouldnt have it any other way. SAN ANTONIO -- Mexicos Orlando Salido outpointed two-time Olympic champion Vasyl Lomachenko in a featherweight bout Saturday night at the Alamodome after losing his WBO title when he failed to make weight. The New York Yankees are not far off either and will try to move closer to one of two wild card spots Tuesday in the second portion of a four-game series at Camden Yards. Baltimore took the opener of this series, 4-2, on Monday and used a strong outing from Chris Tillman. Tillman held the Yankees to two runs and four hits in seven innings, striking out nine batters and walking none. Tillman aided the Orioles in their fourth win in five tries and the club is tied with Cleveland at 1 1/2 games behind in the wild card race. "Its big, this time of year its real big," said Tillman on the importance of these games down the stretch. "Every game I pitch is big. I only get to go out there every fifth day, so for me theyre all big." Jim Johnson picked up his 43rd save in the ninth and Nick Markakis led the Orioles offensively with three hits, an RBI and a run scored. Things got a bit heated between Orioles manager Buck Showalter and Yankees skipper Joe Girardi after the first inning, when the Orioles were accused of sign stealing. Girardi complained to Orioles third-base coach Bobby Dickerson and Showalter took offense, shouting at New Yorks manager near home plate while being restrained by the umpires. "The one thing that Ive done, the whole time that Im here, and everywhere Ive been, is Im going to protect our players at all lengths," Girardi said. "Thats what Im going to do, and there was something that II saw, and Im just going to leave it at that. Nacho Fernandez Real Madrid Jersey. quot; Much to the chagrin of Girardi, his club lost for the fourth time in five tries and now sits three games off the pace for a wild card spot. CC Sabathias success against Baltimore didnt come through, as he allowed four runs, three earned, and seven hits in 7 1/3 innings. "We didnt score runs. If we had been scoring runs like weve been the last week he gets a win tonight," Girardi said. The Yankees, who got home runs from Alex Rodriguez and Lyle Overbay, averaged seven runs per game over a seven-game span entering this series. They opened a 10-game road trip Monday and will also visit Boston and Toronto. Ivan Nova will start for the Yankees Tuesday and he is 8-4 with a 3.02 earned run average in 19 games (16 starts). Nova has won his last four decisions and has faced the Orioles 11 times (10 starts) in his career, going 5-2 with a 4.33 ERA. The right-handed Nova recently tossed a three-hit shutout in a 2-0 win against Baltimore on Aug. 31. Countering for the Orioles in the second matchup with New York will be Miguel Gonzalez, who is 9-7 with a 3.98 ERA in 26 games (24 starts). Gonzalez was 0-4 in his previous eight appearances until tossing seven innings of one-run ball in a 3-1 win over the Chicago White Sox on Thursday. Gonzalez faced the Yankees on Aug. 30 in an 8-5 setback and was reached for seven runs across four innings. The righty is 2-2 with a 3.93 ERA in six career starts against the Yanks. TORONTO -- Playing the second half of back-to-back games, the Toronto Maple Leafs refused to use fatigue as an excuse. Gilet Moncler Donna . Coach Randy Carlyle noticed his players were tired and how much that played a role in a 3-1 loss to the Florida Panthers on Tuesday night at Air Canada Centre. But inside the locker room the talk was much more about a lack of execution. "Theres never an excuse: Injuries, tired, its all B.S.," goaltender James Reimer said. "Those are all excuses. Theyre useless." Winger Mason Raymond, who scored Torontos only goal, scoffed that he and his teammates "simply got embarrassed." They committed turnovers that led to all three Panthers goals and were never really able to keep up. "I echo those remarks as something that we cannot be proud of our performance tonight," Carlyle said after the Leafs (17-16-3) lost for the fifth time in their past six games. Tomas Fleischmann, Sean Bergenheim and Brad Boyes scored for the Panthers (13-17-5), who won their fourth straight and sixth in their past seven games. With the victory, Florida crept to within six points of Toronto for the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. "Were looking for progress," coach Peter Horacek said. "Were looking for consistency in our play." The Panthers certainly showed more consistency Tuesday than the Leafs, who couldnt get much of an attack going until the third period when Raymonds goal broke up Scott Clemmensens shutout and cut the deficit to two goals. Before that, Carlyle bemoaned his team being on the wrong end of far too many 50/50 puck battles. It didnt matter that the Panthers have the lowest payroll in the NHL because they didnt look like it. Torontos lacklustre play helped. "We just didnt play well enough. Thats the bottom line," Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf said. "We take pride in being a team that doesnt get outworked. Tonight we were outworked." Couple that with mistakes at inopportune times and the result was the Leafs 12th loss in 18 games at Air Canada Centre this season. Each of Floridas goals came as a result of a noticeable turnover. Centre Nazem Kadri was the first Leafs player to make a costly error, before some of the 19,076 fans even settled into their seats. Kadri lost the puck at the Panthers blue-line, and seconds later Fleischmann had a jump on Carl Gunnarsson and beat Reimer to make it 1-0 just 3:29 in. Sloppy play continued, but it didnt hurt the Leafs again until a disastrous defensive-zone shift in the second. Defenceman Jake Gardiner put the puck right on Bergenheims stick, but Reimer made a stop to keep the threat at bay. When the Leafs couldnt clear it, Bergenheim got it back in front and scored 5:54 into the second. "We had clear-cut possession of the puck, won a faceoff, it goes back to (Gardiner), they end up with a breakaway out of it," Carlyle said. "Its pretty hard to defend a player in that position, and I told him so. Youve got to expect to have a higher level of execution than that in that situation." Boos predictably followed, and then continued when Phaneufs turnover directly contributed to the Panthers third goal of the game. Boyes poked the puck away from Phaneuf and scored seconds later on his own rebound thanks to some help from Bergenheim in front. "I made some mistakes tonight that are unacceptable," Phaneuf said. "Take responsibility for it." It couldve been even uglier had the Panthers converted on a short-handed odd-man rush in the third period. Shawn Matthias missed a wide-open net, and Toronto didnt have to stare down a four-goal deficit. The Leafs cut it to 3-1 not long after on their most opportunistic play of the night. Centre Peter Holland, filling in amid injuries to Dave Bolland and Tyler Bozak, held onto the puck long enough to get some traffic in front, and Raymond tipped the puck past Clemmensen 3:43 into the third. "I thought we got a little life after that," Raymond said. "We played some better hockey then." Aided by that third-period onslaught, Toronto outshot Florida 29-23, but Carlyle didnt like the lack of second opportunities. "I classified our game as we tried to plan shinny against an NHL hockey club tonight," he said. Clemmensen, who made 28 saves for the victory, was hardly stressed for most of the game. The veteran netminder acknowledged, as did Horachek and other Panthers players, that the Leafs were tired. But it was incumbent on the visitors to take advantage of that. "We were hoping to have a little bit more energy than they had," Clemmensen said. "Fortunately for us, we kept them off the board until the third period. That, in turn, kept the crowd out of it. That was big." This was their third victory in the past two weeks against a team being featured on HBOs "24/7" program. Florida beat the Detroit Red Wings on Dec. 7 and Dec. 10. As for the Leafs, the frustrating is growing bigger amid losses. And with the excuses thrown out, answers are also lacking. "Everyone is trying to turn it around," centre Jay McClement said. "It seems like we need all of us to step up and take the reins and change things. But it seems like were waiting too long to do that." NOTES -- Centre Trevor Smith broke a bone in his right hand when blocking a shot from the Panthers Shawn Matthias in the third period, Carlyle said. "Im glad I play it, but I wouldnt be watching it," he said. Hamels pitched seven strong innings and handed himself some much-needed run support, sending the Philadelphia Phillies to a 6-2 victory over the New York Mets. Carlos Ruiz homered and the Phillies overcame a couple of mental mistakes by Jimmy Rollins to win for only the third time in 17 road games. Hamels hit a two-run single to help Philadelphia improve to 8-5 under interim manager Ryne Sandberg. This was no masterpiece, though. Mets starter Daisuke Matsuzaka took an interminable amount of time between pitches and threw 82 over the first three innings. Hamels worked at a much faster pace but irritated fans by making seven straight tosses to first base with Eric Young Jr. aboard. Young stole second anyway. One night after Jonathon Nieses three-hit shutout for the Mets lasted 2 hours, 19 minutes, thats how long it took to play 5 1/2 innings in a game between also-rans that ultimately dragged on for 3:32. About halfway through, a television camera fixed on Phillies pitcher Cliff Lee spinning a crushed water bottle in the dugout. "Unfortunately, sometimes when you have games like this, you just have to go out there and try to be effective from pitch one and make sure that your warmup pitches are right on par," Hamels said. "Its a lot of self-motivating and just trying to stay in the game as much as possible, which is a lot easier said than done." Matsuzaka (0-2) laboured through 4 1-3 innings on Japanese Heritage Night in his second start for the new-look Mets, who have dropped six of seven. Depleted by key injuries and Tuesdays trade that sent Marlon Byrd and John Buck to Pittsburgh, New York fell to 2-6 on a nine-game homestand. "Todays game was pretty self-explanatory, I think," Matsuzaka said through a translator. "I was all over the place today, all over the zone." The Mets made three errors after going six games without one, which matched a season high. Hindered by the fifth-worst run support in the majors this season, Hamels (6-13) worked around nine hits and improved to 2-0 with a 2.00 ERA in six August starts. The left-hander struck out eight, walked one and upped his career record to 7-12 against the Mets. "Hes pitched well all year," Sandberg said. While rain postponed afternoon tennis matches at the U.S. Open next door, the Phillies and Mets stayed dry throughout a drab evening that matched the pace of the game. Piumini Moncler Scontati. Hamels grounded a two-run single to left field off reliever Robert Carson in the fifth to make it 4-1. That gave Hamels, a career .170 hitter entering the game, four RBIs this season and answered a three-run double by Niese the previous night. "That was huge," Sandberg said. Rollins failed to cover third base on a third-inning popup along the third base line. Noticing that the shortstop was flat-footed, the speedy Young alertly tagged up at second and beat Rollins and Ruiz to the bag. Ike Davis followed with an RBI single on an 0-2 pitch, his 10th hit in 67 at-bats (.149) against left-handers to that point. Rollins made up for his gaffe with a tying double in the fourth -- but got cut down at third for the third out. It was Rollins first RBI in 15 games, his longest drought since August 2005, according to STATS. A ground-rule double by Michael Young set up the Phillies in the fifth and made him 10 for 17 (.588) off Matsuzaka, who forced in the go-ahead run by hitting John Mayberry Jr. with a pitch. That was it for Matsuzaka, charged with four runs, four walks and six hits in his second major league start of the season.
