Goodell just knows he doesnt have to wait for court cases to play out to determine how to discipline those he thinks have tarnished the leagues image. "We dont by policy, particularly if theres a pattern of behaviour," Goodell said Thursday during a visit to Lions training camp. "If there is not a pattern, we certainly do acknowledge the legal process and want to be respectful of that." The NFL has already suspended Detroit running back Mikel Leshoure for two games for off-field conduct. Defensive tackle Nick Fairley likely will have to sit at some point this season, too. Fairley has two scheduled days in court, including one in late November, after getting arrested in Alabama twice in two months. The 2011 first-round pick has pleaded not guilty to driving under the influence and attempting to elude police charges after troopers say in May he was driving about 100 mph and initially refused to pull over. He is scheduled for trial beginning on Aug. 14 on those charges, potentially putting him in a court room between Detroits first and second preseason games. Fairley also faces a hearing on Nov. 27 -- two days after the Lions 11th game -- on a marijuana possession charge from April. Goodell said he planned to meet with Fairley and Leshoure. Fairley refused to say if he would lobby for leniency. "I cant talk about that, but I look forward to talking to him," Fairley said after Thursdays practice. Leshoure, who pleaded guilty to marijuana possession in May in one of two marijuana-related charges he faced, said a letter he got this off-season informed him of his suspension without much input from him. "Im not really for sure how that all went down," he said. "I just know I was given my punishment and I dealt with it. Ive learned from it. I knew there was going to be some kind of repercussion from it." The Lions didnt wait for Goodell to punish cornerback Aaron Berry or offensive tackle Johnny Culbreath after both had run-ins with the law, cutting both players. Berry was arrested during the off-season on suspicion of DUI and again after authorities say he brandished a weapon. Culbreath was arrested for marijuana possession. Goodell said Berry and Culbreath are still subject to punishment from the league. Just when the Lions (No. 11 in the AP Pro32) thought their off-the-field woes were over heading into training camp, they recently found out defensive tackle Corey Williams was charged with drunken-driving last year. Lions general manager Martin Mayhew has defended the job he and his staff have done to look into players past before drafting or acquiring them. "I think weve done a really thorough job analyzing guys backgrounds," Mayhew said earlier this week. "I think theres some times where weve taken a little bit of risk. We continue to look into guys backgrounds and try and anticipate what behaviours guys might get involved in, but I think this off-season was different for us. I think there will be a reversion toward the mean. "As an organization we have not had a lot of those problems off the field. I think well head back toward that as we move forward." Detroit isnt the NFLs only team to have players getting arrested and suspended, leading Goodell to recently meet with the NFL Players Association to talk about what can be done to improve choices made off the field. "Everyone focuses on discipline, but part of it is education," Goodell said. "Were talking about what other things can we do to help players make better decisions. We have a program called Safe Rides (that) any player, any person in the NFL, could call and get a ride home. Those kind of programs need to be utilized." He missed four of the previous five games with plantar fasciitis in his left foot but practiced on Friday without any issues and is listed as probable. With two weeks left, Keisel could sway the Steelers to keep him another year by performing well. He also could be auditioning for a spot on another roster. But, most importantly, he has a chance to slip on his familiar No. 99 jersey after missing most of the last month. Keisel started at Baltimore Thanksgiving night before the injury flared up again, forcing him to leave the game after just eight snaps. "I dont know, I think (the re-injury) could have happened, even if I would have waited," Keisel said. "So, Im glad it happened and that I was still able to come back. Its possible that I couldnt play this week, but Ive done enough standing around. Im a worker bee. (And) its just a matter of getting back to feeling normal again." Keisel believed he had to push it in practice to get an idea if he could withstand the intensity of game conditions. Defensive co-ordinator Dick LeBeau was encouraged by the results. "Hes been getting a little better every week," LeBeau said. "I think hes in a more positive frame of mind, just being around him. I really think that he feels hes got a real legitimate shot. Well see. The fact that he has limited stiffness, which you would expect." Keisel doesnt shy away from the fact he could be in the final days of his career. But Keisel realized that the Steelers could make the decision for him like they did with Hines Ward, Aaron Smith, James Farrior, Chris Hoke and Casey Hampton. All were fixtures on teams that went to three Super Bowls in six years between 2005-10. All either retired, were released or not re-signed when their final contract was up. "Thats the nature of this business," Keisel said. "(And) whatever happens Im grateful for my time here. Im grateful for the success that weve had on this team. (And) I want to go out on a positive note. Of course, it would be tough to move on. I bleed black and gold. Im a Yinzer. I love this city. I plan on raising my family here. So, its going to be a tough decision when its made." Keisel noted that hell consult his family to make the final decision. "I love being a Steeler, and I love being part of this locker room," he added. "Its been awesome, and I hope we can keep it going. You hate thinking it can come to an end. But Ive got a lot of great memories, and I think we can build fond memories every day here. Thats been the best part."
