NEW YORK -- Carmelo Anthony kept losing the ball all night long, and now the New York Knicks have lost their hold on eighth place in the Eastern Conference playoff race. Cristopher Toselli Chile Jersey . Anthony committed nine turnovers and Bradley Beal made another big shot at Madison Square Garden, a go-ahead jumper over Tyson Chandler with 6.9 seconds left as the Washington Wizards beat the Knicks 90-89 on Friday night. Beals jumper quieted the Garden crowd just as he did back on Dec. 16, when he beat the Knicks for a go-ahead layup. "Its pretty cool, I guess", Washingtons second-year guard said. "For them to go silent, thats kind of, Wow." John Wall, who added 19 points, combined with Beal for Washingtons final 12 to dampen New Yorks playoffs hopes. Anthony was favouring an ailing right shoulder he said he initially banged up during the win against Brooklyn on Wednesday. He felt it go out during the first half but decided to keep playing. He lost control of the ball as he tried to go left into the lane on New Yorks last possession, but J.R. Smith, who as of late has recaptured the form that earned him last years Sixth Man of the Year award, recovered it but missed a potential winning 3-pointer with 2.2 seconds left. Smith finished with a season-high 32 points. "I felt like I lost the ball," Anthony said. "It was a tough loss, man. I wish I could have did better and played better. For the most part I thought my teammates did what they had to do. J.R. had a phenomenal game. I wish I could have rewarded that." The Knicks announced after the game that Anthony strained his right shoulder but X-rays were negative. He said he expects to play Sunday against the Miami Heat. New York dropped out of the final playoff position just two nights after moving into it by beating the Nets. Struggling Atlanta went back ahead by one game after beating the Cleveland Cavaliers earlier Friday. Smith would have liked to have had the chance to take the initial shot. "Yeah, no matter who that is, I always want the last shot. Its something Ive never been shy about", Smith said. Anthony, held to 10 points, made a jumper to cut the Wizards lead to 88-86 lead with 1:33 remaining. After Wall missed a long shot in front of the arc at the top of the key, Anthony tried to connect with Tim Hardaway Jr., who was open near the Washington bench for a 3, but Martell Webster intercepted Anthonys pass. The Knicks got the ball back after Wall lost control of it as he drove to the basket. With 33.5 seconds left, Anthony then found an open Raymond Felton for a 3-pointer to give the Knicks an 89-86 lead, but Beal answered with his jumper over Chandler, who had come out to help. It was the second straight win for Washington, which clinched its first playoff since 2008 on Wednesday. "Our defence was pretty good but Trevors (Ariza) defence on Carmelo was outstanding", Wizards coach Randy Wittman said. "Trevor fought and fought him. At the end we decided to trap him and make someone else beat us." The Knicks couldnt and now they will face a tough challenge Sunday when they travel to face the Miami Heat, who have already beaten them twice this season. The Knicks have five remaining games, three on the road, against three teams that are all playoff-bound in the East. New York cant afford to have its leading scorer out. "Well I knew it was bothering him, but you know weve got to have Melo on the floor," Woodson said. "Again, it was a hard-fought game. Our guys came up defeated, so now we have to figure out how were going to get it back because ... Atlanta won tonight." Notes: Former Buffalo Bills quarterback and Hall of Famer Jim Kelly attended the game with his family. Kelly, who is battling his second bought with cancer, will undergo treatment next week at a hospital in the city. ... Before the game, the Knicks honoured Anthony with a plaque to celebrate his 62-point, Madison Square Garden record, set Jan. 24. Custom Chile Soccer Jersey . BARCELONA, Spain -- Atletico Madrid moved one step closer to its first Spanish league title in 18 years on Sunday with a 1-0 victory at Valencia, while Lionel Messi completed an emotional 3-2 comeback win for Barcelona at Villarreal two days after the death of former coach Tito Vilanova. Atletico midfielder Raul Garcia scored with an impressive header in the 43rd minute, and its defence did the rest as it gave Valencia no chance to rally at its Mestalla Stadium. Diego Simeones side moved six points clear of Real Madrid, which has a game in hand, while Barcelona remained within four points after coming from two goals down to beat Villarreal in its first game since the death of Vilanova. Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets wept as the two teams gathered at the centre circle before kickoff at El Madrigal Stadium to observe a minutes of silence for Vilanova, who died on Friday after a battle with cancer, having led Barcelona to the league title last season. Vilanova was honoured similarly across Spains first division this weekend. Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta said his team had been "very affected" by Vilanovas death, who was honoured this weekend by more than 50,000 people who attended a memorial site at Camp Nou. "It has touched all of us," Iniesta said. "I will take with me the example he set for us, both when he was with us and after." Ruben "Cani" Gracia and Manuel Trigueros scored from counterattacks for Villarreal to go 2-0 up by the 55th minute. But Villarreal then self-destructed with own goals by Gabriel Armando in the 65th and Mateo Musacchio in the 78th, both redirecting passes by Dani Alves into their teams net. Messi finally beat goalie Sergio Asenjo after Busquets and Cesc Fabregas combined to set the forward up to net his 27th league goal of the campaign and reach the 40-goal mark in all competitions for the fifth straight season. Earlier, Garcias ninth goal of the league season kept Atletico on course for its first league title since 1996. With a better head-to-head record against Madrid, Atletico can clinch the domestic crown by winnning two of its remaining three games. Jeremy Mathieu Jersey. It first plays at Levante, then hosts Malaga, and finally travels to Barcelona. "We have two very powerful teams behind us that will surely win all their games and we cant relax for even one day," Simeone said. "I ask my team to go forward with the same sense of calm knowing the importance of each result." Atletico can now focus on the Champions League semifinals as it travels to Chelsea on Wednesday after a 0-0 draw in the first leg. Again, Atletico snuffed out their opponents attack for a ninth straight victory. The pacesetters have only conceded one goal during their winning run while scoring 14. Atletico resisted Valencias early push and then went forward in search of an opening goal that came just before halftime. Garcia used an exquisite flick of the head -- with his back to goal -- to lift Gabi Fernandezs lobbed pass over goalkeeper Vicente Guaita and bouncing in off the post. Atletico defender Juanfran Torres was shown a direct red card for tackling Pablo Piatti in stoppage time. Also, Athletic Bilbao routed 10-man Sevilla 3-1 at home to deal a blow to its main rival for fourth place and Spains last Champions League berth, while Almeria fought back for a 2-1 win at nine-man Espanyol to move to within two points of safety. Forward Markel Susaeta got the Basques rolling in the fifth minute by scoring a rarely seen goal directly from a corner kick, curling the ball from the corner flag inside the near post to beat goalkeeper Antonio "Beto" Bastos. Right back Andoni Iraola then served two crosses for Iker Muniain to volley in the 54th and Ander Herrera to head home moments after Sevillas Diogo Figueras picked up a second booking in the 72nd. Kevin Gameiro scored Sevillas consolation goal in the 79th. The win lifted Bilbao six points clear of fifth-placed Sevilla. "This win over Sevilla is huge, but this isnt over," said Bilbao manager Ernesto Valverde. "We are knocking on the door. We are three points away from the Champions League, which would be a dream for everyone." Each week, we will run down the top waiver wire pickups with a focus on the coming week and rest of the season. Air Jordan 5 Retro Shop . QUARTERBACKS Carson Palmer (vs Colts)Last week: 30/42, 419 yards, 2 TDsWinners of their last three and now tied for the final wild card spot in the NFC, the Cardinals are worth keeping an eye on. And a big reason for their recent success is Carson Palmer. During the teams modest three-game winning streak the veteran QB has thrown for 832 yards, six touchdowns and only two interceptions for an average of nearly 20 points per effort. Interceptions – long Palmers Achilles Heel – arent nearly as costly in fantasy football as they are in real football. Grab him and ride the hot streak. Mike Glennon (at Lions)Last week: 20/23, 231 yards, 2 TDsSpeaking of quarterbacks leading surprising win streaks... Glennon is getting some recognition now the Bucs are playing a little closer to their preseason expectations, but the rookie has put up decent numbers all season. Since taking over for Josh Freeman earlier this season, Glennon has averaged more than 200 yards and has thrown at least one TD in every start. Desperate fantasy owners could do worse. Matt McGloin (vs Titans)Last week: 18/32, 197 yards, 3 TDsVery few owners cashed in on McGloins historic debut for the Raiders in Week 11. Hes found a way to win with the odds against him at every level and while the odds of him throwing another three touchdowns against the Titans in Week 12 are small, Raiders coaches like him and think they can win with him. Youll hear all week that Terrelle Pryor could regain the starters role in Oakland; dont believe it, McGloin will be behind centre come Sunday. Others: Kellen Clemens (vs Bears), Geno Smith (at Ravens), Matt Cassel (at Packers) RUNNING BACKS Bobby Rainey (at Lions)Last week: 30 carries, 163 yards, 2 TDsNearly 10 percent more owners chose Brian Leonard over Bobby Rainey after Mike James was lost for the season in the Bucs backfield. Rainey had 26 more carries, nearly 150 more rushing yards, and two more touchdowns. Whoops! Rainey appears Tampa Bays clear choice to replace James who was of course replacing Doug Martin. With the Bucs playing better the past two weeks, Rainey is definitely worth the pickup. Chris Ogbonnaya (vs Steelers)Last week: 8 carries, 69 yards, 6 catches, 30 yardsAlthough Ogbonnaya received the most handoffs for the Browns in Week 11, Clevelands rushing situation is still an ineffective timeshare. But if you factor in Ogbonnayas use in the passing game, the former seventh-rounder has 34 catches for 237 yards on the year, he at least nears useless fantasy back status. Others: Montee Ball (at Patriots), Shonn Greene (at Raiders) WIDE RECEIVERS Brandon LaFell (at Dolphins)Last week: 7 catches, 59 yards, 1 TDLaFell has been regularly featured in this column this year in the ‘Others section, but a big performance in the Monday Night spotlight is more than enough to earn his own paragraph. With Cam Newton and the Panthers playing as good as any team in the NFC these days, LaFell is worth a shot. His 59 yards in Week 11 is about his average on the year, but hes a certainly a candidate for more touchdowns the final six games of the year. Jarrett Boykin (vs Vikings)Last week: 6 catches, 91 yardsBoykin could be a great waiver wire pick once Aaron Rodgers returns from injury, but hes proved the last two weeks hes a pretty good pickup regardless of who is throwing him the ball. In Scott Tolziens two starts in Green Bay, Boykin has averaged 100 yards receiving. He looks like Tolziens go-to target and should continue to rack up the yards; when Rodgers returns hell have a chance to rack up touchdowns as well. Rod Streater (vs Titans)Last week: 6 catches, 84 yards, 1 TDFor Streater to pay off Matt McGloin will have to continue to impress behind centre in Oakland. Streater wasnt worth a spot with Terrelle Pryor starting but he was McGloins favourite target in Week 11, scoring just his second touchdown of the season. If McGloin is even half as good as he looked in his starting debut, Streater could be worth a flyer by connection. Others: Ted Ginn Jr. (at Dolphins), Rishard Matthews (vs Panthers), Kenny Stills (at Falcons) TIGHT ENDS Garrett Graham (vs Jaguars)Last week: 7 catches, 136 yards, 1 TDGraham was hot pickup once starter Owen Daniels was lost for the season to injury but never really cashed in on his potential until last week against the Raiders. And by then many owners that picked him up had given up on him. The Texans are a mess but Graham could be worth a flyer if youre desperate at tight end. With Andre Johnson appearing unhappy in Houston, some of his targets could potentially find their way to Graham. Others: Rob Housler (vs Colts), Brandon Myers (vs Cowboys) Nike Air Max 2016 Scontate .25 million in bonuses based on starts. The 30-year-old right-hander agreed to an $8 million, one-year contract with the Padres in November 2013 but got hurt during spring training and had elbow ligament-replacement surgery on April 24. ST. Adidas Zx 700 Dames . PAUL, Minn. -- Depleted by injuries, and maybe just due for a drop-off, the Detroit Red Wings have found their remarkable 22-season streak of reaching the playoffs in jeopardy. Well, with 12 games to go, they are still in line for a spot. Gustav Nyquists third-period goal gave the Red Wings a 3-2 victory Saturday over the Minnesota Wild, their fourth win in five games. "The young guys are playing more and more and starting to believe in themselves more and more," said Jimmy Howard, who made 28 saves. "Its a fun time of year because youre seeing what we have, and the future looks bright." Brendan Smith and David Legwand each scored on a power play for the Red Wings, who were in a 2-for-25 slump with the man advantage until getting goals on both of their opportunities in this rare afternoon start. The Red Wings also quieted the Wilds top line of Mikael Granlund, Zach Parise and Jason Pominville, held without a point for the first time in eight games. "For both teams it was a muddy track. There was no room for either team. It was just check, check, check, check, check. We found a way to get it done," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. The Red Wings, missing stars Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg among others, moved into eighth place in the Eastern Conference with 79 points. Columbus has 78. Mikko Koivu gave the Wild an early lead with a power-play goal, and Charlie Coyle tied it on a third-period penalty shot. But the Wild, clinging to a wild card spot in the Western Conference, fell to 2-3-4 in nine games since the trade deadline. "We cant keep letting these points go to waste. Weve got to come into every game and play a solid 60 minutes," Coyle said, "Its coming down to the wire here, and weve got to make the most of it." The Wild, who have 83 points with 11 games remaining, are in seventh place, slightly ahead of Phoenix. The first team below the cut, Dallas, has 77 points but one more game left than the Wild. Minnesota coach Mike Yeo, prepared for questions from reporters about the recent slide, tried to stress optimism. "Were a confident team, and we feel good about where were going. We just have to jump start things a little bit right now," Yeo said. Just 15 seconds into the final frame, Johan Franzen, trailing Coyle on a breakaway, stuck his stick out to trip the struggling young centre. The penalty shot was awarded, the first of Coyles career. He used a slick right-left move to fake out Howard and tie the game at 2. That was Coyles second goal in 24 games. The momentum didnt last for the Wild, though. Nyquist, who has an NHL-leading 16 goals in 22 games since Jan. 20, sent a snap shot between Jared Spurgeon and Ryan Suter that Wild goalie Darcy Kuemper didnt appear to see right away and let get past his glove. The Red Wings thought they had another one barely a minute later when Franzen was called for making contact with Kuemper before the puck went in. Nyquist, who leads the Red Wings with 21 goals in just 45 of the teams 70 games since being called up from Grand Rapids of the AHL, credited centre Tomas Tatar for creating space. "He did a great job of driving the middle, and its his goal really. All I did was shoot," Nyquist said. Quipped Howard: "Us Maine guys know how to do it right." NOTES: The matinee was scheduled to accommodate the first Big Ten hockey championship game. ... The teams were due in Detroit for a Sunday night rematch, cramming their only two matchups this season into a 32-hour window. ... With Wisconsin taking on Ohio State, Suter and Wild teammate Dany Heatley had strong interest in the Big Ten title game. Heatley played two years for the Badgers from 1999-2001. Suter, a Madison area native, spent the 2003-04 season there before turning pro. ... Legwand was fined $5,000 Friday by the NHL for butting Pittsburghs Evgeni Malkin with the end of his stick when they played the Penguins on Thursday. ... He was 85. Mikkelsen died on Thursday night surrounded by family, the Los Angeles Lakers announced on Friday. He was a six-time All-Star during 10 years with the Lakers, teaming with George Mikan and Jim Pollard in a frontcourt that to this day is considered one of the best the league has ever seen. Though he was known for his hard-nosed defence, Mikkelsen averaged 14.4 points and 9.4 rebounds in his career and emerged as one of the leagues first true power forwards. He was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1995. "I was a good basketball player, but I attribute greatness to those individuals who sacrifice their time, talents, and efforts for the benefit of others," Mikkelsen wrote in the forward to "The Vern Mikkelsen Story," which was published in 2006. "I did some of that, too, though not nearly as much as I would have liked to, looking back on it." Arild Verner Mikkelson was born in Fresno, Calif., in 1928 and grew up in the northern Minnesota town of Askov, about 95 miles north of Minneapolis. He played college ball at Hamline in St. Paul, at the time a basketball power that sent two other players to the Lakers as well. Mikkelsen was drafted in 1949 and helped lead the Lakers to championships in 1950 and three in a row from 1952-54. One of the leagues original enforcers, Mikkelsen was a physical player and fouled out a record 127 times before retiring in 1959. "He was the protector of Mikan," said Wolves president Flip Saunders, who got to know Mikkelsen during 10 years as a coach in the organization. "He loved beeing around here. Adidas Zx 700 Dames Sale. And he was one of the best story tellers." He was later the coach and general manager of the ABAs Minnesota Pipers. "Vern was one of the first in a long line of great Lakers players, and a key link to our franchises early years in Minnesota," Lakers President Jeanie Buss said in a statement. "We appreciate his contributions to the Lakers and our legacy, and we send our condolences and best wishes to his family." Mikkelsens name hangs in the rafters at Staples Center on a banner that also is home to the retired jerseys in the organization. Mikkelsen remained a revered figure in Minnesota long after his playing days, a gracious story teller who remained close to the game long after he retired. In his later years, Mikkelsen overcame two strokes, diabetes, prostate cancer and the death of his wife of 47 years in 2002. And he remained upbeat through it all. "Keep on doing your best with what you have to work with, as we all have an obligation to take care of ourselves and live as long as possible, respecting each day as a great gift with the intention of sharing the simple, meaningful things of life with family, friends and our community," Mikkelsen wrote. He was influential in bringing the NBA back to Minnesota in the 1980s and the Timberwolves planned to hold a moment of silence to honour him on Friday night before they played the Brooklyn Nets. "During his playing days at Hamline University and the Lakers, Vern was a dominant force on the court and one of the games great power forwards," the Wolves said in a statement. "Vern was a great friend to our organization and we offer our condolences to his family." ST. Nike Free 3.0 V2 Uomo . JOHNS, N.L. -- It took six games, but the Manchester Monarchs finally figured out the St. Johns IceCaps. Rookie Brian ONeill scored the game-winning goal in his Manchester debut as the Monarchs beat the IceCaps 3-1 in American Hockey League action Saturday. The IceCaps (38-17-7) had won the five previous meetings in the season series with Manchester (32-29-3). IceCaps head coach Keith McCambridge said hes sick of his teams recent slow starts. "Thats getting old for me. Im not going to wait around and wait for guys to get their legs going, get their games underneath them," he said. "Im going with the guys who are playing. Right now, theyre not ready to go. They come out, and they stand around, they dont get moving, and the other team gets momentum. They score that goal, and now were playing catch-up." Martin Jones put in a first-star performance with 25 saves for Manchester. IceCaps goalie Ed Pasquale made 28 saves in the loss. David Meckler and Trent Hunter also scored for the Monarchs. Kevin Clark scored the lone goal for the IceCaps. Meckler scored the first goal of the game at 11:48 in the first period as he sprinted for the back post on a two-on-one, and Richard Clune found him for the goal. The IceCaps came alive in the second, outshooting the Monarchs 12-8, and scoring the periods only goal. Clark made a nifty dangle to trick one of the Manchester defenceman into sliding on the ice before putting the puck into the net. ONeill scored the winning goal 42 seconds into the third period. Pasquale made the initial save on a shot from ONeill, but the Monarchs crashed the net and scored. "I would say tonight was a game where Manchester was a motivated team, and we were not a motivated team,"McCambridge said. "Theyre a team thats fighting for their playoffs lives, and were a team that is trying to find a purpose right now." St. Johns will clinch a playoff spot with a few more points, but IceCaps defenceman Travis Ramsey believes the team has to motivate themselves to start playing better hockey. "Were not locked in a playoff spot right now," he said. "Youve got to get up for something like that. These fans care, and it should be enough like that, but we have to find it in ourselves to do better." ONeill signed a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Kings after captaining the Yale University Bulldogs this season, and is leading the Moncarchs with 46 points in 35 games. Hunter added an empty-net goal at 18:39 of the third. The IceCaps got their first look at Scott Zurevinski, who was signed to an amateur tryout contract by the team when his college season ended. The 23-year-old has played four seasons with the Quinnipiac University Bobcats in the ECAC. Zurevinski had a minus-rating 1 and had seven penalty minutes in his first game with St. Johns, but provided some solid energy. Both teams were 0-for-2 on the power play. Spencer Machacek did not play as he was called up to the Winnipeg Jets earlier today after recording a hat-trick in the teams last game versus the Hamilton Bulldogs. The team face off again Sunday afternoon at Mile One Centre. Adidas Zx 750 Prezzi . Ottawa is 0-2-2 in its last four games and sits seven points back of the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. The Senators lost their fourth in a row at home with Tuesdays 8-4 setback to the New York Rangers. Both Ottawa goaltenders struggled, with starter Robin Lehner stopping just 23-of-28 shots in his third straight start. Nathan Lawson made 10-of-12 saves in relief during the third period before exiting with an injury and forcing Lehner back into the game. Mike Hoffman, Mika Zibanejad, Milan Michalek and Bobby Ryan all had goals for the Senators. "I think were generating some offense but, again, were turning over the puck and putting our goalie in a tough spot and they havent been able to make the save," said Senators coach Paul MacLean. "We have to work to get open, we have to play for one another and we have to find them when theyre open." With No. 1 goaltender Craig Anderson still out with a bruised left shoulder and Lawson now day-to-day with a lower-body issue, the Senators recalled netminder Andrew Hammond from the minors. The Senators lost their first two meetings with the Lightning this season, both in Tampa, before handing the Bolts a fifth straight loss in Ottawa with a 5-3 decision on Jan. 30. Ryan and Kyle Turris both had a goal and an assist, while Anderson made 35 saves. The Lightning meanwhile, will try to match their longest winning streak of the season. The Lightning have followed up a five-game losing streak by winning four straight, including Wednesdays big divisional meeting with the Toronto Maple Leafs. New Balance 574 Uomo Offerta. Steven Stamkos notched a natural hat trick in the 5-3 victory, giving him five goals in his last four games. The forward has 19 goals and 30 points in just 24 games this season, having missed time with a broken leg. Stamkos had a solid homecoming, posting his second hat trick of the season and seventh of his career. "There might have been a little extra energy coming back home and playing this game in front of family and friends," Stamkos, a native of nearby Markham, Ontario said. "Especially with the magnitude of the game and how tight we are in the playoff race." Radko Gudas and Tyler Johnson had goals, Ryan Malone and Valtteri Filppula notched two assists each and Ben Bishop came up with 36 saves, including 21 in the third period. The game did see a scary incident in the final seconds of the first period when Tampa forward Alex Killorn was issued a major for boarding and a game misconduct for a hit on Leafs defenseman Paul Ranger. Ranger was immobilized and removed from the arena on a stretcher. He was taken to a local hospital for observation, and the Leafs stated later that Ranger was in stable condition, conscious and alert. "Pretty unfortunate," Killorn said. "Happy that he is OK. I heard through the PR and stuff that he is doing all right now. Its kind of a scary moment, one of those plays where I commit to hit someone without knowing if they are going to turn, so its just an unfortunate play." The victory moved the Lightning into a tie with the Montreal Canadiens for second place in the Atlantic Division with 83 points. That is three ahead of the fourth-place Maple Leafs. When the Toronto Maple Leafs acquired G Jonathan Bernier from the Los Angeles Kings, the immediate reaction in many circles was, why? While there was little doubt that Bernier was a highly-touted goaltending prospect who was blocked by Jonathan Quick in L.A., James Reimer was coming off a strong season, one in which his .924 save percentage played a big part in the Maple Leafs making the playoffs. With the Maple Leafs having other needs -- improving their defence and finding a top-line centre among them -- it wasnt easy to reconcile the decision to give up two inexpensive assets (Matt Frattin and Ben Scrivens) as well as cap space, in order to acquire another goaltender. That it was Bernier wasnt nearly so much the concern. Then, as the Maple Leafs brass talked about having two good goaltenders and competition bringing out the best in them, they also signed Bernier to a two-year contract extension that comes with a cap hit of $2.9-million per season. With Reimer going into the last year of his deal, at $1.8-million, it didnt take a major reach to see a bigger commitment to the new goaltender. All those misgivings aside, the early returns from Bernier have been sensational. Hes stopped 113 of 116 shots in four games, his .974 save percentage leading the league. Of course this is a crazy small sample but, given the investment the Leafs made to acquire Bernier, its heartening that hes performed well and performing well has lifted him into the lead if there is still a goaltending competition in Toronto. Playing behind a Toronto team that gives up a lot of shots -- ranking 27th with 34.8 shots against per game -- Bernier could be busy, but if hes going to be play more than 50 games for the Leafs this season, he has a chance to provide value for the Leafs and fantasy owners alike. 2. When the Columbus Blue Jackets broke camp this year, rookie Boone Jenner was slotted on the left side of the top line alongside Brandon Dubinsky and Marian Gaborik. That didnt last long, as Jenner was bumped by Cam Atkinson, and now the Blue Jackets have a rather formidable trio at the top of the depth chart. They have combined for 11 points in three games and all three have strong possession numbers early in the season, with a Corsi percentage of 54% or better. It doesnt guarantee anything, but is at least a positive indication that this line could generate chances. Gaborik isnt sneaking up on anyone. Even though hes coming off a down season, hes a three-time 40-goal scorer, a known commodity. Dubinsky was a bit of a fantasy sleeper coming into the year because he is a two-time 20-goal scorer who has also had more than 100 penalty minutes three times. With an opportunity to play big minutes in Columbus, with a scorer like Gaborik, it was feasible to see value in Dubinsky. Atkinson adds another scorer to the mix. Coming into the year, he had 16 goals and 32 points in 62 career games, but also had 49 goals in 89 AHL games and 61 goals in 81 games over his last two seasons at Boston College. Hes small, but Atkinson has shown he can put the puck in the net and looks like hes getting a nice opportunity to do so with some skilled linemates in Columbus. 3. Sticking with small Boston College snipers, Nathan Gerbe is getting a prime opportunity in Carolina, playing more than 18 minutes per game and skating on the second line with Jordan Staal and Patrick Dwyer. Gerbe was mostly an afterthought in Buffalo, topping out at 31 points in 64 games in 2010-2011 before bottoming out with 10 points in 42 games last year, but has a track record as an offensive performer. He had 94 points in 101 AHL games after scoring 115 points in 84 games over his last two years at Boston College. Of course it would be easy to dismiss Gerbes three goals in four games as a small-sample fluke, what makes it attention-worthy is that Gerbe has 21 shots on goal in those four games. His 5.25 shots per game is fifth-best in the league to this point. This isnt to suggest that Gerbe is a sure thing, but he has the opportunity and pedigree to be a productive offensive player. 4. Now, with Gerbe playing a big role, its also noteworthy that Jeff Skinner is playing a career-low 15:17 per game. All is not lost with Skinner, however, as he does have five assists and has 14 shots in four games. His 13.7 shots per 60 minutes ranks 15th in the league. (Gerbe ranks second with 17.5.) With that kind of production, Skinners role ought to increase and his scoring will follow. 5. One more note on the Hurricanes. G Anton Khudobin has stopped 47 of 50 shots in two starts, prompting some question of whether or not he could supplant Cam Ward as the starter. Khuudobin does have a . Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 31. 934 save percentage in 23 career NHL games, so that is enticing, but he also has a .912 save percentage in 156 career AHL games, and had a .912 save percentage in the KHL during the lockout last year. Those numbers suggest that the .934 NHL mark isnt going to last. At the same time, Ward had a .917 save percentage from 2008-2009 through 2012-2013, which ranked ninth among goaltenders with at least 150 NHL games. To give up on Ward after a few games into this season would be a very quick hook. Khudobin can close the gap and the longer he plays well and Ward plays poorly, the scales will change but, right now, its hard to envision Ward getting bumped aside for a guy who is just two years younger yet has played 410 fewer NHL games. 6. Lightning C Steven Stamkos connected for a hat trick against Florida (that probably wont be the last time someone goes for three against the Panthers this year), his first three goals of the season. Since the start of the 2009-2010 season, Stamkos has 188 goals, 31 more than Alex Ovechkin, who ranks second and 57 more than Patrick Marleau, who ranks third. Stamkos and Martin St. Louis skated with Ryan Malone at even strength against the Panthers. Always worth paying attention to who rides shotgun on that line. 7. With Tim Thomas nursing a groin injury, Jacob Markstrom has a chance to reclaim the net in Florida, and he stopped all 25 shots he faced in relief of Thomas on Tuesday, but allowing 18 goals on 24 shots against Tampa Bay isnt going to re-kindle a goalie competition. 8. Much was made of the Red Wings decision to add veteran free agents Daniel Alfredsson and Stephen Weiss in the offseason, with the idea that they could form the nucleus of the second line, along with veteran winger Johan Franzen. Its early, but the returns havent been great, as the trio combined to go minus-10 against Phoenix Thursday and they have combined for a total of four points in four games. 9. Ducks RW Jakob Silfverberg arrived in SoCal with a bit of pressure, as the centrepiece of a deal that saw Bobby Ryan go to Ottawa, but hes doing his part, scoring four goals and five points in his first four games with the Ducks. Silfverberg has 16 shots on goal (4.0 per game) and is skating with Mathieu Perreault and Teemu Selanne on the Ducks second line. Those may not be ideal linemates for continued production, but Silfverberg is going to have offensive potential that makes him interesting. 10. In Vancouvers 4-1 loss to San Jose Thursday, no Canucks skater played more than...Mike Santorelli. The journeyman forward skated a career-high 23:42 against the Sharks and has been spending the bulk of his time in the high-rent district on the wing with the Sedin Twins. Santorelli, who scored a career-best 20 goals and 41 points in 82 games for Florida in 2010-2011, has four goals in five games this season. Hes scored 176 points in 214 career AHL games (59 points in 208 NHL games entering this season), so Santorelli isnt altogether unfamiliar with what he needs to do in the offensive zone. Anyone playing with the Sedins -- from Anson Carter to Trent Klatt to Taylor Pyatt to Alex Burrows and all fill-ins in between -- has some appeal, but its too soon to get excited about Santorelli. See if hes still doing this in a week or two weeks, if hes not bumped by Zack Kassian or Burrows, and then well have a better idea if Santorelli can score consistently at the NHL level. FIRST NHL GAMES David Broll, LW, Toronto - A sixth-round pick of the Leafs in 2011, Broll is a burly winger who had 54 points in 67 games with Sault Ste. Marie (OHL) last season. Josh Leivo, RW, Toronto - Taken in the third round by the Leafs in 2011, Leivo is a more skilled forward, who scored 73 points in 63 OHL Games last season. Five months after capturing a 20th English title, Manchester United is languishing in 12th place in the 20-team standings after losing 2-1 at home to West Bromwich Albion in the latest setback to hit David Moyes troubled first season in charge. Amid its worst six-game start to a league season since 1989, United slipped eight points behind Arsenal after the London club beat Swansea 2-1 for an eighth straight away victory in the league. The only solace for United on an action-packed day was neighbour Manchester City enduring similar misery by sinking 3-2 at Aston Villa. With the Manchester giants showing fluctuating form, their rivals from London are taking full advantage. Tottenham is two points behind in second after drawing 1-1 at home to third-place Chelsea in an entertaining match that saw Fernando Torres sent off for the visitors. "Im concerned after todays result, but only because we didnt play well," said Moyes, whose team took another blow six days after losing 4-1 to City in the derby. "But there are a lot of games to go and Ill try to put it right." Even promoted teams Cardiff and Hull are above United after six games. Cardiff won its first away match of the season, 2-1 at Fulham, and Hull edged West Ham 1-0. But another newcomer, Crystal Palace, lost 2-0 at Southampton, which is adding to the surprise factor this season by sitting in fourth place. Sunderland is lodged to the bottom on one point ahead of Sundays game against Liverpool. Unbeaten Everton hosts Newcastle on Monday. Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey maintained his stunning start to the season by setting up Serge Gnabrys opener in the 58th then scoring himself four minutes later at Liberty Stadium. Ben Davies cut the deficit in the 81st but Arsenal held on and is confounding expectations. "We have a lot of quality," said Ramsey, who has scored eight goals in nine matches this season. "Weve had a lot of injuries recently but weve managed to dig in and put a load of wins together and hopefully now we get players back and were in with a shout (of winning the title). Eden Hazard Shirt. ." West Brom fully deserved its first win at United in 35 years, with Saido Berahino clinching victory with a 67th-minute strike from the edge of the box that finished off a flowing team move. Wayne Rooneys free kick score cancelled out Morgan Amalfitanos stylish solo goal, but a United side missing several regular first-team stars with a Champions League match at Shakhtar Donetsk in mind struggled throughout. Moyes team hasnt scored from open play since the first day of the season. City was toasting derby glory last weekend, but was brought to earth by the loss at Villa to drop to fifth. City twice threw away the lead given by Yaya Toure and Edin Dzeko before Andreas Weimann struck Villas winner to leave the visitors without an away win this season. "We played very well and deserved to win, but in five minutes (when Villa scored twice) we threw away everything good we did in the rest of the match," City manager Manuel Pellegrini said. "The way we lost this game was incredible." Tottenham showed it should be held up as a genuine title contender by holding Chelsea to a draw at White Hart Lane, although it will be disappointed the team couldnt kick on after Gylfi Sigurdsson opened the scoring in the first half. Chelsea seized the initiative in the second half, with John Terry equalizing with a header from Juan Matas free kick but hopes of victory receded with around 10 minutes to go when Torres was shown a second yellow card for an aerial collision with Jan Vertonghen. "Im sad because the game was good," Mourinho said. "In the first half it was not such a good Chelsea, in the second half Chelsea was not good -- Chelsea was very, very good." Cardiff inflicted more misery on Fulham manager Martin Jol after substitute Jordon Mutch curled home the winner in the second minute of injury time. Steven Caulkers opener for Cardiff in the 12th had been cancelled out in the 45th by substitute Bryan Ruiz. Robbie Brady won and converted a 12th-minute penalty for Hull while Pablo Osvaldo and Rickie Lambert -- with his 200th league goal -- were the scorers for Southampton. Chris Pronger could be elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame sooner than later. Nike Air Huarache Mujer . TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun reports that the Board of Directors of the Hall of Fame clarified the three-year eligibility waiting period by-law on Tuesday. Though he has not officially retired, Pronger, who now works in the NHLs Department of Player Safety, has not played in the NHL since November, 2011 due to post-concussion syndrome. Under the clarified regulation, Pronger would be eligible for the Hall of Fame this June if the selection committee chooses to nominate him in April. This would be subject to ratification by full membership at the Hall of Fames annual meeting in March, but the motion is expected to pass. Previously, a player would have to have been retired from the game for three years in order to be eligible for election. The new by-law imposes a more objective test for the three-year eligibility rule applicable to player candidates, in particular, resolving possible ambiguity as to the nomination of a player who has not played for more than three years due to injury, but who is still under contract and continues to receive compensation that counts for salary cap purposes or otherwise, Jeff Denomme, president and CEO of the Hockey Hall of Fame, told LeBrun on Tuesday. Prongers 18-year career has been a decorated one. Drafted second-overall in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft out of Peterborough by the Hartford Whalers, Pronger was a six-time All-Star. In 2000, as a member of the Presidents Trophy-winning St. Louis Blues, Pronger captured both the Norris Trophy, given to the leagues top defenceman, and the Hart Memorial Trophy, awarded to the NHLs most valuable player. He captured the Stanley Cup in 2007 with the Anaheim Ducks. Internationally, Pronger was a member of Canadas World Junior Championship winning entry in 1993 and won a World Championship in 1997. Pronger competed for Canada in four Winter Olympics, capturing gold in both 2002 and 2010. Air Huarache Hombre . Three days after getting routed 8-1 on home ice by the Calgary Flames, the Oilers welcome one of the top teams in the Western Conference tonight, the San Jose Sharks. CALGARY -- Martin Jones made a habit of winning big games at the Scotiabank Saddledome during his Western Hockey League career. Four years after guiding the Calgary Hitmen to a WHL championship and a berth in the 2010 Memorial Cup, Jones made a triumphant return to the Saddledome with the Los Angeles Kings. "I was excited to play here for sure," said Jones, who made 24 saves to backstop the Kings to a 3-2 win over the Calgary Flames on Monday. "I had four great years here. It was a good road win. It wasnt pretty." Anze Kopitar had a goal and an assist for the Kings (38-22-6), who have reeled off eight straight wins. "Definitely we didnt want to make it as interesting as it was, but yeah I guess it was pretty big," said Kopitar of his third-period goal that put the Kings up 3-0 and eventually stood up as the game winner. "It wasnt the prettiest win tonight, but at the end of the day we got the two points." Kopitar commended Jones for his play in between the pipes for the Kings. "He put on a really nice show tonight," Kopitar said. "Hes been stellar for us. Every time hes been in the net, hes been really good for us." Justin Williams and Trevor Lewis also scored for the Kings. Mike Cammalleri and Brian McGrattan scored for the Flames (25-33-7), who lost for just the second time in their past nine games at the Saddledome. Coincidentally, it was the Kings who last beat the Flames at home on Feb. 27. "The way we played the last seven-eight minutes of the game, if we had played the whole game like that, the outcome might have been different," said McGrattan, who has goals in back-to-back contests after going 29 games without scoring. "We hung around the whole game. We came on at the end. We didnt give up." Playing in his fourth straight game, rookie Calgary goalie Joni Ortio made 20 saves in a losing cause. With the win, Jones improved his record in his rookie season with the Kings to 10-4. "Its a totally different animal being here and at this level and in this dressing room, on this side of the ice," said Jones, who played his entire WHL career with the Hitmen. "I just wanted to make sure I stayed focused. I was excited to be here but wanted to make sure I was focused on the task at hand here." Never drafted by an NHL team, Jones was invited to L.A.s training camp in 2008 and subsequently signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Kings. With Jonathan Quick out of L.A.s lineup due to a groin injury earlier this season, Jones was called up by the Kings and promptly won his first eight NHL starts, three of them shutout victories. He lost his next four decisions before making 25 saves in L.A.s 6-4 road win over the Colorado Avalanche on Feb. 26. Quick played the next five games in net for the Kings, all wins, before L.A. coach Darryl Sutter decided to give Jones the start against the Flames. "He was really solid," Sutter said. "To be quite honest, when we came back from the Olympics we started in Colorado and he won that game also. Nike Air Zoom Fly 2 Mujer. . We were down 4-2 and he hung on and he won that game also. He did a good job in there tonight." The Kings scored on their first shot on goal at 4:05 of the first when Williams redirected a pass from Anze Kopitar past Ortio. Williams drove hard to the net and attempted to get his stick on the pass from Kopitar, but the puck instead bounced off his shin and into the net behind Ortio. "Theyre a bigger, more physical team than us and I thought they imposed their rhythm right from the start," said Calgary coach Bob Hartley. "They got that early goal and that kind of put us on our heels." The Kings then went up by a pair at the 10-minute mark of the first when Lewis tipped Slava Voynovs point shot into the top corner behind Ortio, who lost his stick on the play when his own defenceman Kris Russell accidentally knocked it out of his hands. The Flames had a great chance to pull within one in the dying moments of the first, but Jones made a shoulder save to stop a shot fired his way by former Hitmen teammate T.J. Galiardi before sticking out his left pad to stop a backhand attempt by McGrattan. Jones also had to be sharp early in the second period as he stood his ground to turn aside back-to-back shots of the stick of Calgary forward Paul Byron. Early in the third period, Jones made a shoulder save to stop Calgary forward Mikael Backlund from scoring on a partial breakaway with the Kings on a power play. Kopitar added an insurance marker for the Kings at 7:01 of the third when he tipped Drew Doughtys point shot past Ortio. A short time later, Jones lunged forward to stop a point blank shot by Cammalleri to keep the Flames off the scoresheet. With Mike Richards serving a delay of game penalty, Cammalleri finally scored at 15:29 of the third to break Joness shutout bid. Cammalleris shot appeared to deflect off Voynov before trickling through Joness legs. McGrattan made things interesting by scoring with 2:22 remaining in regulation when he spun around and fired a slapshot from the slot past Jones. Notes: Injury woes for the Flames continued as a pair of rookies were forced to leave the game. Markus Granlund played just 12 seconds early in the first period before taking a hit from L.A. forward Jarret Stoll, forcing him to leave the game with an upper-body injury. Defenceman Tyler Wotherspoon also sustained an upper-body injury in the third period and didnt return. a The Kings played without forward Jordan Nolan, who was assessed a one-game suspension for sucker punching Edmonton Oilers forward Jesse Joensuu on Sunday. Tanner Pearson drew into the lineup in place of Nolan. a After being acquired by the Kings from the Columbus Blue Jackets at the NHL trade deadline last Wednesday, forward Marian Gaborik is still looking for his first point with the Kings. Gaborik played on a line with Kopitar and Williams. a The Kings improved their record when leading after two periods this season to a perfect 21-0. MILWAUKEE -- Kobe Bryant used a crutch to leave the arena after the Los Angeles Lakers latest loss. Following Los Angeles 113-103 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday night, the Lakers said Bryant had a bone spur in his left foot. He left the arena using one crutch, but appeared to be walking without any pain. Bryant led the Lakers with 30 points, leaving him four points behind Wilt Chamberlain (31,419) for fourth place on the NBAs career list. He played 36 1/2 minutes and didnt show any signs of difficulty during the game. "Inflamed on me. Ill be all right," Bryant told Yahoo Sports. The Lakers are eighth in the Western Conference, a half-game ahead of Utah for the final playoff spot. Larry Sanders scored 13 of his career-high 21 points in the third quarter for the Bucks. He was 8 of 11 from the floor and had 13 rebounds. Ersan Ilyasova and Brandon Jennings each had 20 points, Monta Ellis added 18, and Marquis Daniels had 16 to help the Bucks snap a four-game losing streak. "Our attention to detail was a little bit better," coach Jim Boylan said. "Larry was great, really active. There was a lot of communicating going on. Weve been struggling lately and when you struggle you can get into your own little world, and thats a bad place to be." The Bucks hold the eighth playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, and have a seven-game lead over ninth-place Philadelphia with 11 games to go. However, they werent playing as a unit, the effort and energy level were sagging, until the game against the Lakers. "You need to be playing a collective game, whether it be offensively or defensively," Boylan said. "Tonight, for us was maybe breaking out of that shell a little bit." Sanders noticed the change, too. "Its easy to kind of get in slumps and get that dark cloud over your head and stay there," he said. "But, we fought our way through tonight. Its good and showed a lot of character. You only lose when you stay down. Youve got to get back up." Dwight Howard had 15 points and 15 rebounds for the Lakers, and Steve Nash scored 16 points. Howard said the Lakers needed to play better defence against the Bucks. "We need to work together against these guys," he saaid.Zapatillas New Balance España 2015. "We just didnt do that tonight. The Lakers turned it over on the next possession, and Daniels raced down the court and dunked to make it 104-92 with 4:12 left. The Lakers never got closer than eight the rest of the way. Jennings was on the bench, again, during the fourth quarter. At 8:08 left, Boylan took Ellis out and put Ellis in. He scored the Bucks next six points and turned the momentum. JJ Redick, Ilyasova, Daniels and Sanders finished the game with Ellis. Jennings also was benched in the fourth quarter of Wednesday nights loss to Philadelphia. He was unhappy about the move and felt picked on. "Brandon played great tonight. I took him out, had all intentions of putting him back in the game," Boylan said. "I had every intention of putting him back in the game, but then the game started to roll in our favour. I didnt want to mess with the chemistry we had out on the court. Not that I didnt trust Brandon to come back and play well." The Lakers last gasp came early in the fourth. Antwan Jamison scored twice and Howard dunked in a miss to help the Lakers regain the lead at 83-82. The teams exchanged the lead four times before Jennings 3-pointer at 8:23 put Milwaukee ahead for good. The Bucks started turning it around in the third, using a 19-8 run to close the quarter with 82-77 lead. Daniels stole an inbound pass from Bryant under the Lakers basket and passed to Sanders, who dunked to give Milwaukee a 70-69 lead with 4:23 left in the third. Sanders dunked his way to nine points during the surge. The rest of his points came on a hook shot and a free throw. KANSAS CITY, Mo. http://www.thenflsaintsonline.com/Youth-Austin-Johnson-Elite-Jersey/ . -- Shin-Soo Choo sat at his locker in the Indians clubhouse, the bruise on the outside of his right knee just larger than a baseball and turning every shade of red and blue imaginable. "Its nothing," he said with a smile. Driving in the winning runs must have made the pain go away in a hurry. After getting hit by a pitch early in the game, Choo delivered a two-out double in the 10th inning Saturday night that sent Cleveland to an 11-9 victory over Kansas City -- despite blowing a seven-run lead in a testy affair marked by three ejections and a pair of bench-clearings. "What a crazy kind of emotional game," said Indians manager Manny Acta, who was among those thrown out during an eventful third inning. "Just glad we came out on top." Light-hitting Yuniesky Betancourt helped force extras when he homered in the eighth inning for the Royals, completing their bit-by-bit comeback from a 9-2 hole. With two outs in the 10th, Choo pounded a pitch from Greg Holland (0-1) to centre field that Jarrod Dyson tracked down at the wall. He appeared to have the ball in his glove before it popped loose, and Jason Kipnis and Michael Brantley came around with the go-ahead runs. Jairo Asencio (1-1) earned his first major league win by pitching a clean ninth inning, while Chris Perez set the Royals down in order for his second save of the season. "Always you try to win games," Choo said, "but especially tonight." Choo was plunked by Jonathan Sanchez in the third inning, sending both teams streaming onto the infield. Sanchez and Choo have some history: The left-hander broke Choos thumb last season by hitting him with a pitch. Choo wound up on the disabled list for nearly two months. "I know its not on purpose. The catcher set up inside," Choo said. "But I still have the memory from last year. Maybe I was a little sensitive." Tempers were still simmering in the bottom half when Cleveland starter Jeanmar Gomez hit Mike Moustakas leading off the inning. Plate umpire Gary Darling immediately tossed Gomez along with Acta and third baseman Jack Hannahan, who rushed into the middle of the fray. Royals manager Ned Yost was also in the middle of the scrap, losing his hat as he got into Hannahans face between the mound and first base. "I dont really know what they were thinking," Yost said. "They had to go to their pen early. We had to go to our pen early. Its one of those things." Carlos Santana, Jose Lopez and Kipnis each drove in a pair of runs for the Indians, who have come alive after a miserable five-game stretch to start the season. They scored seven times in the first inning while taking the series opener, and piled up 14 hits on Saturday night. Things soured for Sanchez early in the third, when Brantley ripped a one-out triple to the wall. Asdrubal Cabrera followed with an RBI single, and Sanchez plunked Choo on the right knee. Choo started jawing at Sanchez as he headed toward first base, and the Royals starter dished the trash talk right back at him. Hannahan rushed at Sanchez before the umpires and coaches from both teams intervened, restoring order before tempers boiled over. "I hit him twice. I have nothing against him," Sanchez said. "I just wanted to come in with those pitches. But if youre going to miss, miss in. Im not going to miss over the plate." The Indians immediately pounced on the rattled Sanchez, piling up five runs before he was finally lifted from his Kauffman Stadium debut after 2 2-3 innings. The Royals got a pair of runs back in the third, but Cleveland scored another run in the fourth and added three more in the fifth -- Kotchman went deep leading off the inning, and Kipnis followed a base hit by Jason Donald with his own homer to make it 9-2. Then Royals rally started in the most innocuous of ways. Betancourt singled to lead off the fifth inning, and an RBI double by Moustakas and an RBI by Escobar on a double-play groundout made it 9-4. Kansas City added two more runs in the sixth. Butler ripped a one-out double to left field, and an error on Kipnis at second base allowed Betancourt to reach first and keep the inning alive for Moustakas, whose RBI double pulled the Royals within three runs. Hosmers run-scoring double and Butlers RBI single made it a one-run game in the seventh, and Betancourt finally tied it on a 2-2 pitch from Vinnie Pestano leading off the eighth. Choo made all the hard work coming back moot. "We were down seven and you want to hold the fort, so you can chip your way back into," Yost said. "We did tonight, but we just couldnt get that one extra run to close the game out." NOTES: Indians RHP Ubaldo Jimenez pitches the series finale against Royals RHP Luis Mendoza. ... DETROIT – Randy Carlyle made sure he was being asked about James Reimer after a one-goal loss in Detroit, pausing before he offered an assessment of the now 26-year-old understudy. Nike Free 5.0 Homme rouge . “I thought he was okay, you know, just okay,” said Carlyle with a tone of evident frustration after a 3-2 defeat to the injury-riddled Red Wings squad, the Leafs third in the past four games. Long a point of stability this season Toronto goaltending has suddenly been thrown into question with Carlyles remarks, Reimers performance and the uncertain status of injured no. 1 Jonathan Bernier. Starting in place of Bernier for the second straight game – his fourth consecutive appearance – Reimer allowed three goals on 31 shots, including a game-sealing squeaker under the left arm from Daniel Alfredsson with the Leafs down one in the final minutes of regulation. It was the kind of stop Bernier has made routinely this season, one that Reimer needed to make at that point in the game and perhaps what soured Carlyle most afterward, Torontos comeback attempt ultimately falling short. “So he said I was just okay,” said Reimer, responding to Carlyles comments. “I thought I played good, but obviously youd like to make at least one of those saves in the third.” Such blunt discontent was certainly out of character for Carlyle, who rarely, if ever, singles out any one player, even under the most obvious of circumstances. He was surely agitated by the loss – which saw the Leafs drop further behind Tampa and Montreal in the race for second in the Atlantic – unhappy with the officiating and displeased with a schedule that has his club right back at it Wednesday following 10 long days on the road. To land Reimer in the cross-hairs though on this night was unfair. His team started slowly opposite a Detroit squad that was missing a slew of key components, including Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk. They also suffered breakdowns – Tim Gleason and Paul Ranger both caught flat-footed at the offensive blue-line – that led to Nyquists two breakaways, while also managing just two goals for the third time in four games (all losses). Whatever his motivation the remarks wont help a sketchy dynamic between coach and player, one that includes a very public stare-down from Reimer in the first period of a loss to these same Red Wings on Dec. 21. Further inflaming the matter afterward were the words of Reimers agent and close friend Ray Petkau, who tweeted, "As is customary in Toronto, when your team plays poor defensively game after game you blame your goalie." Petkau later said the tweet was not in response to Carlyles comments. Doubted and dissected often throughout his Toronto tenure and a restricted free agent to be in the summer of 2014, Reimer will probably use this latest bit of critique as motivation and for the Leafs that may be a good thing. Bernier remains out for the foreseeable future (more on that in Five Points) leaving Reimer as the go-to guy in goal with key division battles ahead against the Lightning and Canadiens. They need him to regain the form he showed last year and displayed recently in relief against the Kings, a brilliant performance that saw him turn aside all 31 shots he faced in an impressive road win. “I dont know if I was great and I would like to be great, but I thought I made some good saves when I needed to,” Reimer concluded of his evening. “Unfortunately at the end, especially that third one, you want to come and make a big save for your team there. Unfortunately wasnt the case tonight.” Five Points 1. Kessel Cools Off Cooling off from an unsustainably scorching stretch that saw him post 31 points in a 17-game span, Phil Kessel had seven shots and was a force against the Red Wings, but ultimately went point-less for the fourth straight game and sixth time in the past eight. Its the fifth time this season that the 26-year-old has gone three games or more without a point. The Leafs are now 6-19-2 on such occasions, two of those wins coming in recent weeks against the Flyers and Kings. Chasing the first 40-goal season of his NHL career – he has 34 currently – Kessel has just one goal in the past eight games. James van Riemsdyk, who thrived through a recent stretch of 11 goals and 21 points in 17 games, has also cooled some, snapping a seven-game drought with the late marker in Detroit. The Leafs have leaned heavily on their top line – which also includes Tyler Bozak – for offence, needing the likes of Nazem Kadri (two goals in the past 13 games), Joffrey Lupul (two goals in the past 13), David Clarkson (one in the past 22) and Mason Raymond (the hottest of the group with six in the past 15) to chip in regularly for support. Aside from the odd contribution, however, theyve not done so consistently. Toronto forwards were responsible for only five goals (of 12) during the five-game road trip. 2. Road Trip A road trip that began with so much promise for the Leafs – following wins in Anaheim and Los Angeles – soured at the end with losses in Washington and Detroit. Toronto finishes the season-long swing with a 2-3-0 mark, not bad, but hardly desirable. “I wouldnt call it a success,” said Jake Gardiner, who scored for the fourth time in the past six games. “We were thinking three out of five wouldve been good. Two of five is okay. Games on the road are always tough, something we have to move on from.” “This game and the last game I dont think that we played as well as we have been playing or can play so thats the negative about it,” said Carlyle. “But we battled back, we didnt quit, we found a way to get two goals tonight and make a game of it. Flush this and get ready for tomorrow.” The Leafs have played two more games than the Lightning, whom they host Wednesday, and trail them by a point. They sit three back of the Canadiens, whom they face at home on Saturday. 3. Wearing Down? Second and third among Toronto forwards in ice-time this season and both key members of Team USA at the Sochi Olympics, one might be led to wonder whether Kessel and van Riemsdyk are simply wearing down at this late stage in the season. Both have seen their ice-time rise (slightly) in March as the Leafs trend toward an 11-forward, seven-defender lineup. Kessel, who had a second period breakaway attempt stopped by Jimmy Howard, actually entered the night as the team-leader in ice-time this month, averaging more than 22 minutes. van Riemsdyk was just a touch behind at nearly 22 himself. “Its been very demanding,” said Carlyle of the schedule and its effects on playing time. “Its the first time in my career that you go out on a 10-day road trip and you come back and youve got to play back-to-back at home with your first game back. I dont know where that one comes from.” van Riemsdyk led all Toronto forwards this night with more than 22 minutes, Kessel a shade behind with just under 21, including exactly nine minutes in the third. Carlyle employed eight forwards for most of that final frame as the Leafs looked to even the score. 4. Bernier Status Nursing a groin injury, Bernier remained off the ice for the fifth consecutive day on Tuesday. He then missed his second straight game in Detroit and will sit out again at home on Wednesday when the Leafs host the Lightning. With a likely day off for the team on Thursday, his status for the weekend also appears in real doubt with a back-to-back looming against the Canadiens and Devils. That would mean a return next week at the earliest, all of which ups the pressure on Reimer to perform. “Theres always going to be that push to get your people back,” said Carlyle ahead of a tilt against the Red Wings. “Bottom line is the player makes the decision. All we can do is treat him medically, provide him with the right environment, give him the opportunity to test his injury if hes good enough to go and well make the decision based upon input from him the player.” Though hes split each and every back-to-back set between his two goaltenders this season, Carlyle would be hard-pressed to not come back with Reimer on Wednesday even in light of Tuesdays circumstance. Though hes enjoyed a fine season with the Marlies, Drew MacIntyre has yet to start an NHL game. 5. Phaneuf Scare Upended by the stick of David Legwand in the final frame of Tuesdays affair, Dion Phaneuf remained down on the ice before quickly departing for the Toronto dressing room. He returned to the bench a few moments later, chirping at ref Dan OHalloran for the non-call on Legwand. “Theres no point in talking about it,” said Phaneuf afterward. “It wasnt a slew foot, it was actually a stick, but its done and over with.” The Leafs captain said he had the wind knocked out of him on the play. He still managed to lead his team with more than 23 minutes on this night.
