Introduction

The check engine light on a Toyota is an indicator that one of the sensors or systems operated or monitored by the computer is malfunctioning.OBDSTAR X300M The computer manages the engine functions and emission controls as well as several other systems. All present day vehicles have the same type of regulatory system employed to operate the function of the drive train.

History

Since 1973 when the auto manufactures first started to employ emission controls on vehicles, computers, still in their infancy, came on the scene. Their initial duties were to monitor the exhaust emissions and make corrections in the timing and the carburetor mixture to control the emissions. A good understanding of the primary function and control the computer has on the impact of the performance of the vehicle serves to lend predictability to the issue. Computers are common place and becoming more and more advanced with increasing responsibilities in the operation of the vehicle.

Functions

The Toyota computer not only operates as an engine management center, but it controls the emissions, the security system, the air conditioning, the suspension, the new Trac systems, the transmission functions and more. It does not however, have anything to do with the internal components of the Toyota engine. The Toyota check engine light does not tell the operator if the engine is low on oil or of a particular malfunction due to wear.

The Toyota has a computer called an Engine Control Management (ECM) computer that controls engine management.UCANDAS VDM2 There is a Automated Braking System (ABS) computer that operates the function of the brakes, a Body Ride Control that operates a multitude of accessory options such as power windows, locks, seats and so on. There is an air conditioning computer for the use of dual air conditioning, a transmission computer, and some that operate in conjunction with the main ECM computer to control the suspension.

Diagnosing

Purchase a computer OBS scanner from a parts store. The OBS scanner is a requirement for diagnosis. It is relatively inexpensive but a necessity. Computers store malfunctions in memory and illuminate the check engine light on the dash. The computer will relinquish these codes in the form of a series of numbers similar to a bar code. To retrieve and understand these codes, you need a scanner. The scanner will come with a code sheet to correspond with the codes presented.

Attach the code scanner to the OBS connector under the driver's side dash. Turn the ignition key on until the lights illuminate on the dash. Do not start the car. The scanner at this time will be displaying read codes. Push the button to read and the scanner will begin to interrogate the computer. It only takes a few seconds and the scanner will respond with a code or codes if more than one. Write these codes down, such as P1425 and look up the codes on the sheet provided for a definition.

Just because the computer generated a code for the oxygen sensor (oxygen sensor malfunction), does not necessarily mean that it is bad and should be replaced. The oxygen sensor measures the amount of oxygen in the exhaust system by producing a very small voltage that the computer sees as an indication as to the fuel mixture being to rich or lean. A multitude of things can cause the oxygen sensor to indicate the wrong mixture.XTOOL HD900 For example a bad spark plug, wire, air leak in the manifold, bad thermostat or bad gas. If the car is running well enough and you see that this code came up, know that no disaster is imminent and continue to drive until it can be repaired or you can check it out yourself. To properly diagnose a code, even with a computer, it helps to read the manual so that you know what each sensor does and what else on the vehicle may cause that sensor to generate a code.

The Mustang is one of America’s favorite muscle cars and has been for years, even in less powerful V6 form. But despite having less power than its V8-powered Mustang siblings,Launch EasyDiag Plus 2.0 the Mustang V6 is still a terrific car. There are also several ways to go about getting more speed from one of these cars, including upgrades to the engine, exhaust system and suspension.

Install a more free-flow exhaust. The stock exhaust system on a Mustang is relatively restrictive, so one of the first changes owners in search of more power make is the installation of a larger-diameter exhaust. You can either purchase an exhaust system and header from a company that sells performance parts or have an exhaust shop install a performance exhaust.

Replace the air box with a cold-air intake. The stock intake on a Mustang’s V6 lets a limited amount of air into the engine, whereas a cold air intake will provide the motor with all the air it needs. The more air the engine can get, the more power it can make. Plus,XTOOL HD900 a cold-air intake sounds good. Installing a cold-air intake is generally pretty easy and involves removing the stock air box and then bolting on the new air intake.

Have the engine’s computer reprogrammed. A performance ECU will recalibrate how much air, fuel and spark the engine receives and will help it make more power. This modification should be performed by a shop familiar with modifying automotive electronics.

Install a better suspension. As originally equipped, the Mustang V6 has a pretty plush suspension, which is great for comfort but not so great for speed. Remove the stock springs and shocks and install stiffer,OBDSTAR X300M  lower springs and adjustable-performance shocks that will allow your Mustang to corner faster. Remember, a fast car is not simply fast in a straight line but fast around corners as well.

Replace the stock wheels and tires with a performance wheel and tire package. A larger set of wheels will allow you to install wider, stickier tires for better handling and grip. To make this an easy process, simply order the wheels that you want with the tires installed already. Simply jack up your Mustang with a floor jack and install the new wheels and tires.

Lighten it. Gaining speed is not simply a function of adding power but is also a function of weight, more specifically a lack thereof. Though you want to keep your Mustang usable for the street (unless it’s a race car), you can install lighter aftermarket sport seats in place of the heavy stock seats. If you want to really get extreme, remove the rear seats, pull out the stock carpeting and sound deadening and install a lighter carpet kit made of thinner carpeting.

No matter what kind of Pontiac vehicle you drive, at some point you're sure to come across a situation where the check engine light goes on and will require the error code to be cleared out. Error codes are triggered when your Pontiac's computer detects a mechanical issue with the car and then illuminates the check engine light. Once the problem is fixed, the code will need to be cleared out to turn off the check engine light.Vagcom 16.8 The process is the same regardless of what year, make or model of Pontiac you drive.

Open your hood and familiarize yourself with the components under the hood.

Look for the battery, which will be in various locations depending on your specific year and model. The battery usually is located in one of the corners of the engine compartment. It will be a square box with two cables connected to it. If you cannot visually locate the battery, consult your owner's manual for specific location.

Use the adjustable wrench to disconnect the negative battery clamp.Digiprog 3 It will be connected to a black cable, and the metal terminal coming out of the battery will be marked by a minus sign.

Wait for a minute with the negative battery clamp disconnected.

Insert the key into your Pontiac's ignition, and turn on the vehicle. Look on the instrument panel on the dashboard to confirm the check engine light has gone off.

Tips & Warnings

If you don't have the time or feel confident working around the battery, you can have the codes cleared out with either an OBD-1 or OBD-2 scan tool, depending on the year of your Pontiac. Most auto parts stores have these scan tools and will clear the codes for you, free of charge.
When working in your battery, if you notice a blue, green or white powdery substance on the battery terminals, use a wire brush to clean it off. This substance is corrosion and can restrict the flow of electricity from the battery to your vehicle.
After disconnecting and reconnecting the negative battery clamp,Renault CAN Clip if the check engine light is still on when you start your Pontiac, this means the codes were not cleared out of the computer. Disconnect the battery again and wait for 5 minutes before reconnecting the clamp. The extra time will be sure to clear out the engine codes.

Ignition Problems

If any of the spark plug wires are defective or have become loose or disconnected,BMW ICOM A3 Pro this will cause the car not to start. Check to see that all plug wires are firmly connected on both ends and are free of damage. Tighten any loose connections and replace the wires if they appear to be defective.

The ECU, or engine control unit, is the computer that runs the engine in a Ford car or truck. By modifying the software that runs on the ECU you can increase the power and torque figures of your Ford.VOLVO VIDA DICE Modifying the ECU is called flashing and can be done through a number of methods, from simply plugging in a software module to the diagnostic port all the way to physically soldering a chip onto the motherboard of the ECU itself.

Determine the year, model and powertrain in your Ford as well as any other modifications previously made to your car or truck. This is important because not all engines can be flashed, generally it becomes prohibitively difficult for pre1990 Fords. Generally flash software will only work within a specific family of engines so you need to buy the right brand and model of flasher. Car modifications may necessitate a trip to a dynometer to properly calibrate the flashing software. Dynometers measure the power output of a car and require the assistance of an expert to use this data with a ECU flasher.

Determine which flasher system you need for your Ford. There are three kinds of ECU flashers: the software flash, the plug-in/soldered chip and the inline flasher. Each has its advantages and drawback, though not all options are available for all engines and you will need to research your specific powertrain. The software flash is the easiest to install, in most cases, with the software loaded onto the pre-existing electronics. The plug-in/soldered option is the hardest because you must plug another chip into the circuit board or even solder it on, which carries the greatest risk of damage. A newer option of a plug-in flasher is available, whereby the flashed chip is plugged in between the wires going from the ECU to the engine. This is the easiest to install, though not many cars are currently supported.

Install the software flasher by plugging in the flasher module to the diagnostic port on your Ford. On most Fords the port will be located under the driver side dash. Some require the car to be off, some require it to be on. Once it is plugged in,Vagcom 15.7 follow the instructions included in the kit. These usually require entering codes for your chosen level of performance because the flasher is capable of variable levels of horsepower and torque boosting. This method is reversible, in most circumstances, though some flashes can only be reset by special machines at dealerships.

Install the plug-in chip by opening the ECU box after turning off your Ford. The kit will tell you where to plug in the chip — usually the diagnostic port. To install the solder chip, you typically must remove another chip or attach the chip at a junction.VCM II Exercise caution and, if you have any doubts, seek expert assistance. You can damage your Ford if you connect the wrong wires with solder. This method is irreversible.

Install the plug-in inline flasher — which resides on a chip in a special wire. Locate the control wire from the ECU to the engine. The car needs to be off when you plug the wire in. Turn on the car and you should have an instant power gain. If you want to return to stock performance, turn off the car, unplug the wire and reconnect the old wire.
